Alternative Health Care.alternative medicine,Scientology & Quackery

I could be wrong, but aren't some aspects of natropathy viable? Afterall, I think Aspirin is derived from willow bark. Which in turn reminds me that IF Jett Travolta had Kawasaki's Syndrome, he should have been taking aspirin in quite large doses - which he wasn't.

Also, perhaps we should include iridology, magnet therapy, reflexology, colloidal silver, and reiki to name a few.

Joseph Mercola, D.O was raised as a Catholic. Later in life he switched to evangelical Christianity, but now calls himself spiritual rather than religious. Mercola was formerly a member of the Christian Medical Society but stopped his membership in 2002. Despite a lack of empirical evidence, he promotes religion and prayer as having health benefits, and focuses strongly on studies that advocate this position.

Deconstructing The Myth Of AIDS (Gary Null)

Two dear friends of mine, one of whom is infected with HIV, have been believing the crap in the Gary Null AIDS video for 4 or 5 years now. They had been telling me all kinds of crazy stuff about HIV =//= AIDS for a while now, and saying I had to watch this video...

I finally got around to watching it recently. I had to stop within 5 minutes, because I heard so much BS that I became enraged and had to commence Googling and debunking it immediately.

I already confronted the more scientific one of them with a half dozen links repudiating Gary Null and AIDS denialism. She remains only partially convinced.

The one with HIV is totally gullible, uneducated, and likes to see conspiracies, so I think I may have an even harder time with him. I haven't tried to talk to him yet, as he's the one with the diagnosis, and he believes in the film even more than she. He does at least know that I watched it.

Any advice Anons? I have only just made first contact on the issue. They've been drinking the Kool-Aid for years.

Good fucking riddance, the last thing we need is quacks practicing medicine - you'd think those who've been through any form of university, even a BA in English would know how to detect bullshit. It's sad that there are still quite a number of doctor's who will recommend homeopathic treatments and the like.

Back on topic though, is there a way we could link either Narconon/Purification Rundown to quackery (aside from the obvious bullshit about vitamins, saunas and niacin) and possibly get some form of healthcare body onto them through promoting health benefits without substantial evidence?

When did he claim to be a medical doctor? Not in "All about radiation", at least. The parts written by the medical doctor are quite distinct from the parts written by Hubbard (who was the 'nuclear physicist' in this context). The former part is more-or-less sane and pretty typical 1950's nuclear-safety info. The Hubbard stuff is batshit crazy, and contradicts the former in a big number of ways.

He used his phony College Degree which credited him as a PhD.. several Scientologist all through Sequoia University gave themselves Degrees and used the term MD
Hubbard was awarded an honorary Ph.D. by Sequoia University his own mail order university

L. Ron Hubbard also claimed himself as a Doctor of Philosophy

sometimes they claimed MD it was Master of Dianetics

just one example

others world make claims as well when speaking about Hubbards.
History and background is filled with lies from his boyhood to his military career..they still promote most of the lies..especially his fake Military record. they still claim hes a Nuclear Physicist.
Scientologist deceived many people on his phony record..

Yes, yes, Hubbard had a bunch of fake degrees and a fake 'doctor' title from his fake PhD (plus the ones he bestowed upon himself, like 'commodore'). I'm not disagreeing with that. I'm saying I can't recall that he used a fake MD (as in medical doctor) title as well.

The 'medical doctor' in 'All about radiation' isn't Hubbard, and none of the stuff posted above says that Hubbard falsely claimed to have an M.D. either. Why would he, anyway, given that he was already pretending to have more prestigious degrees?

"By a Nuclear Physicist and a Medical Doctor"

clearly the title is deceptive..Hubbard didn't mind at all that people assumed he was a Doctor
don't forget what a big con -artist he was.-He wasn't a Nuclear Physicist either.

he often used and exploited that misconception and profited off the misrepresentation
Hubbard was the sole author..by all accounts...in the earlier printings.

Re: Scientology & Alternative medicine

I've read the cover and most of the book. It's in two distinct parts and only one is written by Hubbard. The two sections are credited to the 'physicist' and the 'medical doctor' separately.

Nobody is disputing that Hubbard was a con artist and lied about his merits. That doesn't mean he was doing so in this case. You just misinterpreted the title. As I said, I've read most of it, and it's clear to me that Hubbard was not trying to convince people that the same person wrote the whole book. It's patently obvious the same person didn't write the whole thing, because it's in two sections which are totally different. One is down-to-earth and more or less accurate, one is Hubbard's usual drivel, which starts off by explaining that radiation 'can't penetrate the human body', even though the preceding section of the book explained that it clearly does. Not to mention the styles are totally different as well.

Even if the early printings didn't explicitly say that two different people wrote the book, there's nothing in it that implies that it was the same person, either.

Hubbard claimed all kinds of phoney academic degrees, but he wasn't claiming to be a medical doctor in "All About Radiation". (And note that the dust jacket only claims Hubbard was a 'nuclear physicist'. Which he naturally wasn't since nuclear physics barely even existed when he went to college)

Re: Scientology & Alternative medicine

you have the luxury of knowing decades later it was written by Hubbard and others.

Its first printing was from HASI (Hubbard Association of Scientologists International) by way of the Speedwell Printing Company, Kent, England, 1957

Hubbard Had control of what went on the cover, . it was a blatant misrepresentation
people buying those early editions were mislead. to say the least..eventually scholars did pick up on the fact that ..the portions of the book were separate authors. the changes reflect that later.

the medical portions of the book had quoted Hubbards lectures. throughout.

credit to the doctor was given much later.

people became well aware of Hubbard's fraud..and propensity to stretch and alter the truth.
he exploited people perceptions of him any chance he got and he did it over and over and over.and over and over. Hubbard has a long track history of playing with public perceptions.

saying he was a Nuclear Physicist..had a PhD..PhD is a Doctorate.. a legitimate degree allows you to call yourself Doctor..

making claims you have the cure for Cancer ..sure looks like your playing doctor.
Dianetics made Medical claims and that book sold well.. was written well before "All about Radiation" was he a qualified anything then?..NO. the reality is Hubbard used those things and other claims to try and exaggerate his qualifications.
he caught alot of Heat from the AMA and the federal govt..for his medical claims..
he sure didn't mind any confusion. and he certainly enjoyed exploiting it..

Hubbard was cashing in big time auditing people and not for religious purposes. but to cure illness.

the question should be:When did Hubbard not Play a Doctor?...in the early years.

not only did he give medical advice..but he mislead people about his qualifications to do so.
Hubbard constantly portrayed himself this way.

it wasn't a printing mistake ..or forgetfulness.. it was a conscious act of deception

by publishing a book with the words "By a Nuclear Physicist and a Medical Doctor" and giving the only authors credit to himself in those early printings.. he was exploiting that to the hilt and he damn well enjoyed it.

significant portions were re-written in 1979..was only then a writing credit was given to another
besides Hubbard . or the mysterious medicus

I was watching TV tonight and they played a commercial for "Niaspan", thats a brand name for Niacin prescribed to treat blood problems. As always, the list of side effects was read off, and it peaked my interest and I got online and found this article from the US Government's National Institute of Health. There is a section concerning the flushing of the skin, which Hubbard attributed to radiation leaving the body. No mention of radiation in the article, and unsurprisingly, the NIH does not list cigarettes as a source of vitamin B.
Of course, Anons all know this, but I think its a good, concise resource:
