What about the legalities of operating a 501c under a social security number? I can't imagine that that would legal. This may be the reason we are not seeing 990 forms. Would they be stupid enough to file under someone's ss#? No way to see those returns if they did. They would have to lose their tax-exempt status if this the case. I guess they could file a sole proprietor in that sense.

Freedom Center is huge! 58,000 square feet on 10 acres?

Could this be the new/next NN AH type training center?

Never realized till now, how big this place is. Wonder how many beds???

I don't think they qualify for any 501c status except 501c3, which requires the 1023 with an EIN to be submitted.

As far as I can see from poking around the IRS site, about the only time an SSN can be used instead of an EIN is when it's a 'for profit' sole proprietorship, or small partnership type LLC. If a for profit business is incorporated as anything other than an LLC, or if there are employees involved, an EIN is required.

I'm getting the definite feeling someone is playing fast and loose with the rules here.

Schmoozing CARF again:

Another web site with no 800 number and broken contact page:
The contact info at the bottom of the page is Narconon International.

Edit: Same IP address as, same date created.

The plot thickens. I was looking over the Desmond Deposition thread and saw mention of an e-mail address of 'BestDrugRehab@'. So on a whim I entered 'Best Drug Rehab' into LARA, and what pops out but:

Best Drug Rehabilitation Holding, Inc. H97640 Pending
Best Drug Rehabilitation Holding Marne, Inc. H97639 Pending

So I do a quick Google! on "Best Drug Rehabilitation Michigan" and one of the results I get back is this review. A very familiar name crops up in there:

I think you guys may be falling into the Narconon/Wickstrom trap too. Good, I can use the company.

Edit: Not 100% positive, but I think Wickstrom is no longer associated with Narconon. All of the old docs and lack of new docs make it hard to verify anything at this point.

Thinking about Freedom Center, as a citizen I should be able to call and get an EIN to use as a write-off if I want to donate to them, and if I'm looking into a rehab, I should be able to see their certifications, no?

You'd think.

Tracking down the NN Int stuff is time consuming, but at least it's there, sort of. This whole Michigan mess is some kind of giant "tar baby" all by itself.

Does anyone have any idea how many beds at Michigan?

10. YouSeeNothing Member

I "believe" that this is the new facility at the old Trillium Hospital. It get confusing because there are a couple of facilities we keep finding--the Trillium hospital one and the old Stone Hawk compound--and we're not sure which ones are being operated by Narconon.

According to the press release I posted, they also just added a Women's Wing.

Are these the same place? <shrug> They claim to be in different towns/cities.
13. YouSeeNothing Member

If they are still seeking certification how are they in operation? They are licensed with the state, is that enough or were those licenses granted based on the fact that they have a non-existant certification?

Intelligence: do you happen to know what licenses and certifications are required for operation in Michigan? I'll start searching now...

On a side note, I came across this page which appears to list most of the rehabs in Michigan. Most appear to be legit, and in 24 pages I didn't see any mention of NN or any of the Wickstrom related entities. They also have info for other states.

My understanding of U.S. law is that an individual cannot receive non-profit tax exempt status. Only a corporation or LLC can. I think someone should make the IRS aware of this irregularity.

OK. If the address is valid, "809 west erie street albion mi" then I believe Narconon Freedom Center is definitely in the old hospital building. west erie street albion mi&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x883d452faca78c21:0x39dbc6f33fbdd58b,809 W Erie St, Albion, MI 49224&gl=us&ei=kWFGUIKAF4yi8gT1ooHICw&ved=0CCAQ8gEwAA

And Per Wickstrom's A Forever Recovery was located at the old Narconon Stone Hawk facility, not sure what's there now though:
216 Saint Mary's Lake Road Battle Creek MI 49017 Saint Mary's Lake Road Battle Creek MI 49017&ie=UTF-8&hq=&hnear=0x8817f6b1f9e65f23:0x30ea20ff67e25bc0,216 St Marys Lake Rd, Battle Creek, MI 49017&gl=us&ei=NWJGUK_wOoPk9ASat4FA&ved=0CCEQ8gEwAA

A Best Drug Rehab is located here now: Drug Rehab of Michigan address&fb=1&gl=us&hq=Best Drug Rehab of&hnear=0x4d4caa3dc7ca0411:0x97dd48597a62c9b3,Michigan&cid=0,0,6305680425227818780&ei=q2JGUPbTJYvo8QTyloA4&ved=0CEQQrwswAA

SHIT. According to this site, there's still A Forever Recovery on the old Stone Hawk site!

That's at least three (Stone Hawk dissolved in 2008) rehabs opened in 3-4 years and we only know for sure that one is Narconon only because it's in their damned name! :)

Narconon Freedom Center
809 W. Erie, Albion

300 Care Center Drive Manistee

Forever Recovery

I guess I'll check to see if those other rehabs are in Friends of Narconon. I'll start with their 990...

Forever Recovery also starts 4/2/12 after they move to a new address...

They moved into the old Freedom Center of Albion site.

NN's are so dumb! The big news article was about NN Freedom Center EXPANSION for woman's Dorm.

Publishing massive Press Releases does nothing for them except PR for COS members
and government/health entities.

The big downside to the Press Releases, are what we are seeing in this Thread and many other Forums.

Everytime NN publishes a Press Release, they are scrutinized with a microscope. DUH!

Flying under the Radar to avoid being exposed, means STFU and keep quiet!!!

But, as we know, they are "not the sharpest pencils in the box", eh'?:)

To be honest, their info is so obfuscated at this point that we can't even tell you what their EIN is. But, I'm not sure that was intentional or just stupidity and bureaucracy at work. :)

Meh. Paperwork can get tangled on its own, but when it's this jumbled, there are fraud artists at the heart of it.

LOL - This ^^^ can you imagine me sitting down with government and health agencies
who know nothing about the COS or Narconon.

First, I gave them just a wee bit of dox, then I gave them a Cult Glossary to understand WTF was being said
in the dox - LOL:) Then I still only gave them a little at a time so their minds wouldn't explode.:)

I wish I had more to give you on the Freedom Center. They'd laugh you out of the offices if you went in with what I have now--an enigma wrapped in puzzle. :)

Certainly. But chances are, you'd have to get a FOIA to get what they have filed, because they're sure the hell not going to show you anything. They're not desperate for inmates yet. As I've said, legitimate rehabs have waiting lists. Narconon always has a bed available somewhere. So they'll probably tell you to GTFO if you ask for dox.

Huh?? I'm just winging it as I go where this Michigan mess is concerned. Nothing related to the NN Int/NN Int DBA's seems to apply. If we actually knew what to look for re: Michigan, this mess would be sorted out in a heart beat. Just have to pretend were glaciers, slowly wearing the Michigan mountain down.

All we're doing is figuring out how they run the business, who runs it and where at this point--when it comes to Feeedom Center. Once it's figured out what to look for, we might find something helpful.

I did a "County" search on Calhoun County, where Albion is located, in NCCS and not one of the entities we're looking at showed up. This lack of hard data in any of the nonprofit search engines is making me slowly come to the conclusion the entities we're looking at in Michigan may be registered as "nonprofit" with the state, but none of the active ones have a current Federal Fm 1023 "exempt" status. It's the only explanation I can think of for why they aren't showing up in any of the NCCS, ERI, or IRS exempt searches.

It's possible NN Freedom Center had "exempt" status for a short period, when NN Int gave them that 'grant', but let it expire. Which would mean donations to any of them, while possibly deductable on MI State Income Taxes, would not be deductable on Federal Income Taxes. I wonder if their donors know that?

35. BigBeard Member

Made a plea for help on the NN Freedom Center EIN over on 'Tipping Point' in thread, maybe we'll get lucky.

Also noted this in the first post over there:

Seems like they are signing people up for the 'nonprofit' NN Freedom Center, then shipping them to the 'for profit' AFR for "detox", only Mr. Teague pitched a fit about it so they sent him back.

36. YouSeeNothing Member

Wow, they have the actual Teague suit over there! Just started my coffee, but I started reading anyway and I just wanted to say that Teague was addicted to benzos and that it is one drug you can actually die from withdrawals. Benzos need to be reduced over time--cold turkey will kill someone. I don't think any doctor would allow a patient to go cold turkey off of benzos and risk death. Either the admitting doctor is a complete moron or there was no doctor in pre-admission.

37. YouSeeNothing Member

Intelligence may want to contact the attorney handling the Teague case to provide dox? Shockingly (not) Narconon Freedom Center lost all of the patients documentation. No admission forms, no record of admission or treatment. I wonder if the admitting doctor has records?

Here's the case: Paragraphs 24-26.

Teague's attorney:

Plaintiff is represented by
Jeffrey P. Ray, Esq.( MI Bar #P31098)
2500 Lake Lansing Road, Suite A
Lansing, MI 48912
(517) 372-5700

Just searched the case for the word "doctor" and there's nothing there. I wonder if they know that all new students need to be checked by a physician prior to admission to see if they can handle the super sauna salon. He must have been seen by a doc, right?
38. YouSeeNothing Member

Someone I know just called Michigan Department of Labor & Economic Growth, Corporation Division at (517) 241-6470 and though they don't maintain a database of EIN numbers, they did verify that Narconon Freedom Center is still a tax-exempt non-profit corp in Michigan.,4671,7-180-24786_24820-81461--,00.html

I guess, someone I know, should call the IRS and see if they have an EIN number?
39. RightOn Member

If there is any doubt in the public eye that NN is not Scientology, this should clear it up. lol
How many cases of missing dox does the COS have now?
40. BigBeard Member

Working on it.
