APA Convention in Hawaii takes on Scientology

On the heels of the successful workshop delivered in Toronto in Sept at the CPA, Dr. Steve Wiseman has organized an international "all-star" panel workshop entitled:

The War: Understanding and Confronting Scientology's Efforts to Destroy Psychiatry

Bottom line is that again this is historical, the first time the American Psychiatric Association has hosted such a presentation on this important subject. It represents the next major level of interest and engagement on behalf of professional psychiatry to push back against the distortions and misinformation put out by Scientology for years.

    The panel is:

    Stephen Wiseman MD (Chair)
    Psychiatrist

    Stephen Kent PhD
Professor of Sociology, University of Alberta, Canada
Aruguably world's #1 academic expert on Scientology

    Lynn Partridge MD
    Psychiatrist, Colorado

    Nancy Many
Author of "My Billion Year Contract"

The workshop is at the annual American Psychiatric Association convention, taking place in Honolulu Hawaii May 14-18, 2011. The workshop itself is scheduled for Monday May 16, in the morning.

If any Anons in Hawaii(are there any?) or elsewhere want to attend and/or support Dr.Wiseman and the panel, stay tuned to this thread for more information to come.

I think he's making a mountain out a mole hill over this so-called "war." Psychiatry and scientifically based mental health fields have been going strong despite Scientology's efforts. But props to him for at least making practitioners aware of Scientology for future reference.

  16. Wonder how many Scientologists are going to protest this? Should be interesting.

Mark Bunker will be interviewing Dr. Wiseman at the conference.

I wish it was closer (to me).
Would love to see it. And see if there is a reaction to it.

Bonus though...hard to bus scilons from L.A. to this event.

Got that covered man. 10 years in the field. Psychiatrists, psychologists, and even counselors have hardly ever heard of Scientology. Those who have are more concerned about the future patients they get coming out of that cult. That is where awareness is important for real mental health practitioners. Trust me, Co$ is not a threat to psychiatry. It used to be a joke for anyone who criticized them, in fact.

/irony: Scientology is giving us patients.

Yeah, I don't foresee Miscavige fronting the money to help them postulate the plane tickets to get everyone there and back. Maybe John Travolta will be donating his time to shuttle people across the Pacific? More likely they'll have to pay their own way.
  23. I suppose bringing them in on the Freewinds would be too obvious among other reasons for not doing so.
  24. Optimisticate Member

How do you feel about them backing federal mental health legislation that would restrict you in your field?
  25. Anonymous Member

    I dunno man.

Weird shit #1: Head of Maine NAMI sounds like CCHR:

If staff can't hold patients to keep them safe, aggressive patients will have to go to jail.

Weird shit #2: Moonbats have a stronghold at the APA: http://apacaim.org

nice! i smell major WIN in this section come May 14-18, can't hardly wait!
  27. Optimisticate Member

CCHR has spoken out against ECT - this group would be a target, not a cohort.
  28. Anonymous Member

All Scientologists are moonbats, but not all moonbats are Scientologists.

Point is, ECT is not a friggin' "energy healing." It's on that list to add some sciencey to the other stuff, which is crazy.

The lack of raeg at ECT by the moonbats today does not mean they love it, just that they know how to play their "acceptable truths" and gradients.

You mean stuff like this? http://forums.whyweprotest.net/thre...-mental-health-remember-brooke-shields.78120/

The APAs and the Counselors Association all have lobbyists too on both the federal and state level. If that isn't enough so does the Medical Industry, Pharmacology Industry, and many other manufacturers of psych-test materials and treatment manuals who are affected by legislation on mental health. So frankly I don't feel afraid or nervous about the CCHR at all. They do enough damage to themselves.

^Yeah except looks like a bunch of psychs drank the Reiki touch assist kinesiology Kool-Aide, so who knows what they'll lobby for.
  31. Anonymous Member

    Complementary medicine =/= alternative medicine.

Allowing a patient to do Reiki, while they are getting conventional science-based treatment, can make patients calmer and more relaxed. Think of it as utilising the placebo effect while ensuring the patients are getting proper care.

don't get rid of the psychs...how are we going to afford bus fare to do raeds w/o their funding??

I'm not sure what you mean. Could you elaborate in English please?
  35. AnonLover Member

Every new set of troops on the playing field needs their own angle or reason for taking up position with firm footing to wield a sword that can lay the best blow from that turf.

And i think this is darn good place for the psychs to start after turning a mostly-blind eye to scilons anti-psych crusades for so long. And altho this angle might not have long-term legs and full gamut to run in the outside world, inside the cult is a different story.

Psychs were Hubbard's biggest button, so just the act of them doing something can potentially cause internal freakout echos. And if by chance this evolves into something that in its own right makes just a small difference - imo that too could have positive ramifications that can trickle down some win in some sectors over time.

So it's all good, /SALUTE the APA for playing the game!

Hey Guys, I am the Ex Sea Org Member Speaker, and believe me my speech will include information I did not publish in my book, and is geared to the actual WAR they wage against Psychiatry. The other Panel Members have things to say that have also never been said. This is Momentous --- The first time that the APA allows ANY discussion of Scientology at all. The audience will be in schock -- I know details that OSA doesn't even know.....
Wish you could all come, and yes Scientology has the money to fly in lots of people. I just want to see enough V for Vendetta friendly faces that I don't feel alone with all the CCHR. But my Voice will not be stopped. This one is for Greg Bashaw, may he rest in peace.

This is what I used to think. But I was wrong.

Order + Chaos = Chaos. You cannot "integrate" quackery into a hospital setting without disrupting the science-based culture of medicine on a profound level. Crank magnetism creeps in, and doctors gradually come to accept all manner of nonsense. This happens because science is hard work. Weighing evidence appropriately is difficult and requires a constant peer review vigilance.

I see children with behavior problems who have been diagnosed by other MDs with "chronic Lyme disease" or "chronic candidiasis" or "adrenal fatigue" and thus are on antibiotics, antifungals, or oral hydrocortisone indefinitely. In case you weren't aware, these diagnoses are nonsense. I cannot report these doctors for their batshit because the chiropractors and naturopaths have organized a political movement aimed at changing the laws in most states, making "integrative medicine" non-actionable.

tl;dr: Reiki causes brain damage in the MDs who prescribe it.

Let the Reiki practitioners do whatever they do apart from actual medicine where people are supposed to respect evidence.
