I am so angry that the topic is the planned signage on a historic building.
Tobias Pratt needs to do his homework.
The topic should be why the fuck has it stood vacant for 8 years? What back taxes do they owe? and how can the people of Detroit get Scientology to GTFO.
The COS is going to pray on it's citizens.

  3. Detroit News: Decision on Scientology sign for Detroit site postponed

    http://www.detroitnews.com/story/ne...ogy-church-seeks-sign-downtown-site/27353763/

The Church of Scientology is scheduled to return to the Detroit Historic Commission at the end of the month with its request for approval of a sign atop a vacant building across from Hart Plaza.

Church officials want to install a Scientology sign on the Standard Savings Building, last occupied by the Raymond James investment company.

It also wants to put a vertical Scientology sign on the side of the building, a vertical cross above the front door, a roof deck and 12-foot screening walls for the heating, ventilation and air conditioning equipment on the roof, commission chairman Devan Anderson said.

The application was tabled Wednesday by the Detroit Historic District Commission, which asked church officials and Gensler Architects to examine alternatives, Anderson said.

Anderson said the commission didn't have a big problem with the signage, noting that the building currently displays a large "Raymond James" sign. The Scientology sign would use the same infrastructure and essentially replace the existing sign.

Rather, the main concerns are with rooftop logistics, including the placement of proposed mechanical screening and a railing that could have "a detrimental impact on the appearance of the building," he said.

"We asked them to take a little more time ... to look at why they were proposing what they were proposing," Anderson said. "It looked like there were other options."

A Gensler representative has referred questions to the church, which bought the vacant, eight-story building at Griswold and West Jefferson for $3.5 million in 2008 to establish its Michigan headquarters.

In an email early Friday, officials with the Los Angeles-based church said: "The acquisition of this historic and beautiful property is part of the Church's program to establish Ideal Churches of Scientology around the world. ... Several more of our Churches are scheduled to be opened within the coming months as they have construction schedules well in progress.

"This is a moment of great anticipation and tremendous excitement for the staff, volunteers and parishioners. The Church in Detroit is on this same launch pad. And in fact designs for this building are well in progress now."

Anderson noted the commission's request Wednesday should not prevent work from beginning inside the building.

The church said its Detroit arm acquired the 49,947-square-foot building with money raised by the local congregation. Its website lists Detroit as among the cities in the U.S. where "new properties in planning or construction stage" were projected to open last year or in 2015.

Initial plans for the site after it was bought in 2008 included a chapel, lecture rooms and meeting space for the church's community service programs.

The church, which counts actors Tom Cruise and John Travolta as members, said at the time it would relocate most of its operations from Farmington Hills.

Church officials said at the time the expansion was a response to increased demand and to help meet the needs of area church members.

According to the website, since the first church formed in 1954, "more than 10,000 Scientology Churches, missions, related organizations and affiliated groups minister to millions in 165 countries."

The commission has to decide whether to approve or deny the application within 60 days.

  4. I'm posting this everywhere I can, please pass it on. Scientology is not simply "controversial" it dangerous. They need to do some homework! $cientology is NOT a religion, it's a thought controlling "CULT". I'm a very, very proud of my city and looking forward to moving my business to the heart of downtown in the next several months. We need more profitable business's in the "D", we don't need an empty building owned by a crumbling cult. This cannot happen. The Detroit Historical District Commission needs to educate themselves on this very dangerous "CULT". Some suggested reading:

This "CULT" also runs and manages anti-drug clinics known as "Narconon". These facilities are run by Scientology. People have died in their care. 29 lawsuits have been brought against these facilities with another one being filed as recently as today.

Information on Michigan based Narconon facilities acquired via the FOIA: http://narcononreviews.net/narconon/foia-request-michigan-attorney-general-releases-complaints/

Everything this cult touches is corrupt and self-serving. The "CULT" acquired their tax-exempt status decades ago and would therefore not pay property taxes to the city. This would result in tens of millions of dollars in lost revenue. Detroit cannot afford to have this "CULT" occupy one of its most historic buildings. Also, they will often times let their facilities become dilapidated and rundown (see links below). They go unoccupied for years. The "CULT" does this in order to maintain the facade of expansion and to hide its wealth in acquired properties.

Let's hope they DENY it. If I had the resources, I would send them information on the cult buying up buildings and never putting them to use at all.

A beautiful morning in Detroit to jump on one’s awesome motorscooter and zip down to visit The Detroit Ideal Org.

It had been some time since I last visited, and I was anxious to see the progress that they must have made in the many years since they acquired the property.

Whoops, as I approached, the streets were blocked off and I couldn’t get my usual prime parking spot. It turns out that there was a high mileage vehicle event going on, which itself was very awesome.

Nonetheless, I parked and approached the den of thieves. Absolutely no progress has been made and it is looking as abandoned as ever. I couldn’t really even get good pictures of the interior due to the fact that the windows were so filthy. But here is what I did get. Enjoy.

Bonus pic of one of the eco-vehicles, and the plaque on the Ideal Morgue reminding us sadly that it is the site of the founding of Sainte Anne’s Church in 1701.

The detroit one should be closed off and given back to the city. It's completely empty. Maybe send the city council a letter or e-mail, or via a phone call?

They didn't get it from the city.
But maybe I'll make some calls about code violations.

Now that I think of it, with the city on the upswing, and with an awesome, forward-thinking mayor, I'm sure putting it on the tax rolls would be appealing.
"Seize and sell"....per the Montreal Org.
Won't happen, though, they'll just sell.
This is VERY prime real estate.
Solid building, with a view of the river and plaza.
Short walks to Cobo Hall, City Hall, Renaissance Center.
I'm sure they bought it at bargain basement prices. I would guess it's nearly tripled in value.

The old morgue at Lafayette and Griswold, back in the early 1980's when Windsor had a mission, had a revolving door. It provided much lulz.

Perhaps you see the reason the David Miscavige Real Estate Trust idle morgue acquisition corporation purchased it.

You go back. i remember that place. It was an old bank building if I recall correctly.
I remember seeing it, and them, and knowing something was fucked up about it.
This was before learning about cults.
I believe the history is Ann Arbor, Downtown Detroit, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills, plus the "ideal" now.
    Moving target.
I'll be back, but the last time I checked out FarmHills there were Farrakhan women in and out.
Here's my history there, and elsewhere:

The history is actually, Detroit, Royal Oak, Detroit, Royal Oak, Farmington Hills + Detroit Idle Morg
The morg moved like a yoyo between downtown Detroit and central Oakland County.
The Ann Arbor morg shore story was that they "moved to Kalamazoo", but there are 100 miles distance between Ann Arbor and Kalamazoo which translates to about an hour and 45 minutes drive time. Not exactly a trip an Ann Arbor resident would make regularly to "be on course" or "get auditing". The old morg in Royal Oak was actually closer at 45 miles, less than an hour drive, and the new morg in Farmington Hills is closer still at 32 miles, a bit over half an hour drive.
The Ann Arbor Org closed. It died because it did not have enough dupes to keep the doors open.

The New York morg is in NYC. The Chicago morg is in Chicago. The Toronto morg is in Toronto.
But the Detroit morg is in another county northwest of Detroit by a good half hour drive.
