Ukraine Presidential Candidate Rumored to be OT6 Ukraine's 2010 presidential election will be held on Sunday, January. 17. If no candidate wins more than 50 per cent, a second round will take place on Sunday, February 7. Expectations are that incumbent President Viktor Yushchenko (Our Ukraine Party) will not be reelected and that the leading candidates are current Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko (BYuT - Bloc of Yulia Tymoshenko) and Opposition Leader Viktor Yanukovych (Party of the Regions). Arseniy Yatsenyuk, leader of the Front for Change, a former Foreign Minister of Ukraine and former chairman of the parliament, is a rising star and some were even saying that he might become the next President, but his popularity in polls has declined lately. Yatsenyuk could, however, become a kingmaker in a second round by supporting Tymoshenko or Yanukovych. One aspect of the presidential campaign which has not been reported in the West is that, since May 2009, rumors have been spreading on Russian and Ukrainian websites and media that Arseniy Yatsenyuk is a Scientologist and that joining Scientology boosted his career in banking and carried him to success in politics. The following paragraph of an article dated Jan. 15, 2010 summarizes what has been repeated in many other articles: As early as June 2009, articles can be found saying: No information connecting Yatsenyuk to Scientology seems to exist in other languages than Ukrainian and Russian. One can't help wondering if this is true or whether it is just slander to damage a political career. During the 2004 presidential campaign, someone went so far as to poison Viktor Yushchenko with dioxin. MOD EDIT: I have altered the thread title, as it seems this reflects more than just Ukrainian leaders sadly.
