TechDirt: NSA officials really, really, really seem to hate Ed Snowden's guts
TechDirt: NSA Goes From Saying Bulk Metadata Collection 'Saves Lives' To 'Prevented 54 Attacks' To 'Well, It's A Nice Insurance Policy'
They are surprised that governments lie.
That is shocking.
Sanjay Gupta thought the government had a good reason to place pot on the Schedule One list. Then he did his research.
It's shocking to me that people would believe governments about important and critical events. Governments have a very poor track record when it comes to telling the truth.
Forty years of a war on drugs, sending millions of people to jail for decades, all based on governments lying about science and research.
Forty years ago we caught the government spying on its citizens. The result was the Church hearings. Now, forty years later, we have NSA still spying on us. Nothing changed, it just went deeper underground and became more pervasive. That is what happens with gov 'oversight'
My question is, why in the world does anyone believe a government about its activities? They are known liars, they have been lying as long as they've been active, and yet people still want to believe.
I think it is clear that our intelligence services do lie to us. That makes any nice sounding reforms tricky to accept. How do we know we aren't getting a bunch of words?
A new leak.
Dish fire targets sms.
Fisa courts still operate.
Bulk data collection still happens.
No mention of encryption weaknesses by obama.
Business as usual.
Snowden to ask Russian police for protection after US threats – lawyer | RT News
NSA whistleblower, Edward Snowden, will ask Russian law enforcers to protect him, his lawyer, Anatoly Kucherena, has said. The former NSA contractor is concerned about his safety after seeing death threats coming from the US.
Snowden Requesting Russian Protection After Threats, Lawyer Says | Bloomberg
Edward Snowden, the fugitive former U.S. contractor residing in Russia under temporary asylum, is appealing to the local government for protection after receiving threats against his life, his lawyer in Moscow said.
“He has no other option but to seek protection and ask for the situation to be cleared up,” Anatoly Kucherena said by phone today. “There are worries and alarm about statements and actions on the part of some officials.”
Kucherena, who has represented Snowden’s interests in Russia since he sought refuge last July after leaking classified National Security Agency documents, pointed to reports on Buzzfeed this month that contained threats made by unidentified U.S. officials. Two days ago, Representative Mike Rogers, a Michigan Republican and the House Intelligence Committee chairman, described the 30-year-old American as “a thief” who had possible Russian assistance and has “incredibly harmed” the U.S. military.

Oh great, now our government is openly copying assassination techniques from the USSR.
Russia Plans to Extend Snowden Asylum, Lawmaker Says
Personally, I hope that Snowden stays in Russia. He is really safer there.
It's a hoot that the government is discussing taking him back to "face justice" in the belief that the leaks will stop.
Dude I watched that !! While he was as timidly and vaguely supportive as possible. He's just another mainstream babble box that's jumping on the logic train. Hard to argue with the dramatic changes and positive impact it's made on those peoples lives. Especially considering the given examples couldn't find any comparable relief from Pfizer , Eli Lilly , or Merck.
I think the U.S. government would like to "make an example" of him as a "deterrent" to possible future whistle blowers.
After what is now decades of Gitmo, the idea that sending anyone back to the United Snakes will even possibly result in "justice" is almost an exercise in hilarity. What does "justice" now consist of here? Apparently a black bag over the head and a waterboard.
Some shining beacon on the hill we are now.
That's your government you are bitching about. Careful, someone will tell you to love it or leave it.
Justice is now whatever we are told it is. If the government tells us torture is legal, then torture is legal. That is the world we are living in now.
He has said many times that all of the information has already been given out. They can arrest, imprison, or execute him and the leaks can not be stopped.
Big Brother is watching you
Quentinanon said 'future whistle blowers' - he wasn't referring to the Snowden leaks but to potential future leaks and leakers - and I think he has a point.

This is what's called an "insurance policy." If they don't fuck with Snowden any more than they have already, maybe some of these future disclosures get put off to where they can make better excuses.
If they nab him now, though, it all comes out at once. This says something for his drip torture approach.
From a game theory perspective, it's quite well planned. The strategy suggested is that any large scale whistleblower/leaker should hold back a Hiroshima file for when immediate, large scale revenge is necessary.
People with a probable "Dead Mans Switch"
I hope Glenn has one, he is a brave motherfucker
I would say that they are ALL Brave motherfuckers
I hope we never find out.
I’m curious, have any of these, “I have a card up my sleeve” insurance policies ever been paid out by anyone ever?
I have a strong feeling that the most damning of the damning has been scattered to the four corners of the earth.
Vote with your feet and move to a better country, man.
Why? As bad as American domestic policy is, the last thing in the world I want is to be on the receiving end of our even more atrocious foreign policy, which often involves bombs.
Eric Holder: If Edward Snowden were open to plea, we’d talk
Attorney General Eric Holder said Thursday that prosecutors would hold talks with National Security Agency leaker Edward Snowden if he were willing to plead guilty to criminal charges.
“If Mr. Snowden wanted to come back to the United States and enter a plea, we would engage with his lawyers. We’d do that with any defendant who wanted to enter a plea of guilty,” Holder said during an appearance at the University of Virginia’s Miller Center.

Yeah'' Right!! Like that's ever going to happen. Eric Holder is either a complete fucking idiot, or, completely fucking insane.
Snowden says 'significant threats' to his life
(Reuters) - Former U.S. National Security Agency contractor Edward Snowden told German TV on Sunday about reports that U.S. government officials want to assassinate him for leaking secret documents about the NSA's collection of telephone records and emails.
In what German public broadcaster ARD said was Snowden's first television interview, Snowden also said he believes the NSA has monitored other top German government officials along with Chancellor Angela Merkel.
Snowden told ARD that he felt there are "significant threats" to his life but he said that he nevertheless sleeps well because he believes he did the right thing by informing the public about the NSA's activities.
