EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

Thread for discussion of the regional protest to be held in Chicago on July 26th (will know for sure tomorrow on the date).

The location will be Millennium Park, in downtown Chicago. The location is made of win, as there are tons of visitors during the summer (it is right downtown on Michigan Ave., and a huge tourist draw), and the police there know how to handle a protest without handling the protesters. It also has an unusual amount of awesome sculptures, which will make for epic photos.

I would recommend checking out megabus.com for travel plans. Just about anywhere to Chicago round trip is about $40, (KC to Chicago round trip $30, Colum $32, MN $40) and the buses are much nicer than Greyhound.

****HOSTELS****

<$40, some in downtown.

This one looks good, a few blocks from the park.

Evidently if you get a group together at the HI hostel you can have some sort of private "apartment" style place, with a bunch of bedrooms and a bathroom (no kitchen) for $28/person. This would be an excellent option.

WARNING: DO NOT STAY SOMEWHERE REALLY CHEAP WITHOUT LOOKING UP REVIEWS/STREET VIEW OF IT. DEAD ANON CANNOT PROTEST.

STOCK TRIP PLAN:

If you're taking the megabus, it drops you off downtown at Union Station ("Train Station").

It's a quick trip from there to the HI Chicago hostel. Either by foot, or hopping on the brown line for a stop ($2 fare).

Then, it'll be quick getting to Millennium Park the next day (The HI is a few blocks away).

By next monday, we should have a lot of financial details hashed out. Prepare to donate to the midwest protest and buy awesome products to support the cause!
7. Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

I highly doubt I'll be able to go to this myself since summer for me is going to be full of moving and transferring to university, but that doesn't mean I can't keep a close eye on the discussion and see how things develop and turn out.

I propose (as something fun to do and since we'll have lots of people from different states) an anon rep from each state could give a speech on behalf of their state which would include a request for their state gov to help take action (I know I've been working on a speech to the Sen Grassley from my state for weeks)

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

That's an awesome idea.

I know Columbus Anon are already planning on making their own flag/insignia.

I've been considering driving from Milwaukee to Chicago for the normal protests because Milwaukee anons are too afraid to protest in not the middle of buttfuck nowhere. This is going to be awesome. I hope to lil baby jesus I don't have work that day...

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

Quick update about progress with info gathering. More to come tonight.
Millennium park has several spaces available for us to use for speakers, bands, djs or whatever. Bands you say? yes.
In addition to having a massive show of force and solidarity for the midwest protest, we also want to have alot of fun. So yeah, talking about bands and other crazy crap =).
The big stage at millenium, pritzker, is at least $25k IF we somehow get incorporated as a non profit. Otherwise the costs is closer to $50k.
The space you see with the columns in the pic above is also available but it only costs $250/hour to rent. The location is better for grabbing public attention from michigan ave and tourists. It is right there on one of the biggest streets in Chicago.

So, we'll figure out more about that as we go along.
I've been on the phone with alot of people trying to get availability and costs for various venues. There is quite a range and as I am able to narrow things down, I will post updates.

As I mentioned earlier in this post, we are getting together for serious business and lulz.
My idea, and only mine for sure at this point, is that we protest at the park which gives us mega exposure and plenty of opportunity to interact with the public and the media ( this may or may not include music and such at the park) and then, march on the new Midwest Scilon HQ. This is not too far from the park and will absolutely have an impact. When protest time is over, I think it would be cool for us to have a party for the horde. Bands, DJs, fucking around, food etc... I am looking into places where this can be done.
Options I am exploring:
Theaters-large space, can be our private party, can do alot of good stuff there including mocking scilon videos on a big screen.
Banquet halls and hotel ballrooms- again, same deal.
Bowling alleys.
even called dave and busters today- a restaurant/game palace- about private rentals for large groups. Got the info and will look it over tomorrow.
(video games for anon? no, no one will go for that! lol)
High schools, universities and john birch society meeting halls.
Ok maybe not john birch.
Lots of phone calls to make and info to compile before I can make more coherent posts.More to come though.

Also, things that YOU can do to help.
-Think of fund raising ideas to make this party EPIC.
-If you've got any skills at event planning or travel agenting, we need you.
-Any event we come up with will require some technical people. We'll want to capture as much as we can on video or even do streaming. Even doing sound for speeches and music will need people to keep everything moving while not killing everyone with feedback.
-Information dissemination. Spread the word. I'm honored to be in the host city and I'm going to do everything I can to make sure our brothers and sisters have a good time. The more people we get to come to this event, the more options we have.
-Designs for flyers, tshirts if people want them and other cool shit. Nimo has come up with some awesome designs but I'm sure more artfags would be handy.

Personally, I'd like to know what YOU want this to be. Post your ideas here or on the wiki. For anyone experienced in planning stuff, email me at Lronenturbulated@gmail

Thanks

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

I'm thinking art show.

I need this to eventually have a unifying tight theme. But so far, I've only got ideas for individual pieces.

1. Ask good Anon photogs from around the world to donate their photos to be sold.
2. Have at least one Anon dressed as a Scilon giving "authentic" auditing sessions, with a nearby wall plaque explaining how auditing is used in Scientology. Have sign for "Free Stress Test" and a prop e-meter.
3. Use the Alexa graph of traffic to Scientology.com, and enturbulation.org to tell the history of the movement thus far. Web traffic used as a history timeline is geeky idea art people might like. This could also include the recent youtube account suspensions of Magoo and WBM.
4. Framed letters from disconnected people.
5. Have a laptop or two so people can chat with a British Anon, or Swedish Anon (or whatever) on IRC. Shows the movement's primary interface, and displays its global stretch. Don't throw the person in a channel, but a private chat with someone who knows their stuff.
6. I'd need a progger's assistance, but some sort of visual representation of the amount of protest media being generated by Anon would be cool. Any other way to visually represent web traffic would also be welcome.

Flash could work for this, like I guess I mean a way to post a running log of all the text that gets posted on enturb, or all the IRC's. Get so much data that it's more like a really fast scroll down than anything else. Show just the quantity of information being passed around. It wouldn't necessarily have to be in real time, but that would be cooler.

Hey, Ohioan here. =) If I don't end up having family plans that day, I am SO THERE. (I will probably be asking Chicagoans for help because I get SO LOST there. D: )

Someone had a good idea in another thread: people have been wanting Anonymous flags, and apparently those smaller ones are fairly cheap? They could work well to pass out with a tag with info. BTW, where were the flags in the photos made? Those are pretty nice.
15. nimonian Member

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

It might be cool to have multiple flags for each group of Anon. I made some Chicago specific ones already. I could work on a regional one though if we think that would be better.

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

I was just talking about the green one, but state-based ones might be cool, too. If you have any ideas for the Ohio one, could you toss them my way? I posted mine here (http://forums.whyweprotest.net/83-usa-east-coast/columbus-oh-8878/6/#post177635) just as a jumping-off point (woo crappy Paint), but the only response I got was that it might be insulting because it's too close to the Ohio flag. :(

So I would appreciate anyone with a good ideas or shoop skills :)

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

Hey an om onus, Glad you want to come to the party! The flags you see in the chicago pics were made by a talented local anon. She did a great job. If you want a photoshop layers version of the black/green anon flag, send me a PM.

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

If you guys want flags to be made, my mom was the one who made the ones in those pics. Materials cost was 15-20 for the green and black, likely more for more complicated flags. try to keep them not TOO fancy, as my mom does have limited time she can spend.

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

How exactly are 1000 people going to even FIT in millenium park?

Considering that they didnt want us to go in the park last time, and were told to be in that one little area... we had trouble blocking people with just forty or fifty people, much less 1000.

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

you should read the midwest regional threads on OUR message board or go to the midwest planning channel to find out. You know better than that! lurk moar!

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

For people coming in from Michigan (me) if you'd like you can stay in Indiana and use the Northern Indiana Commuter Transportation District which runs trains from South Bend to Millenium Station, stopping at a number of places in between. The last time I went to Chicago I used this train route and it cost me less than $15 round trip.

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

Hell yeah Delta, NICTD. I'm glad I stumbled onto this. As a student in Chicago, I've commuted a lot, so if anyone needs help or advice with connections or etc, I might be able to help. I do have a few quick questions of my own:

-What's the difference between the 12 and 26 dates?
-Should we bring consumables for ourselves and others?
-Is there any kind of signage we should bring or create for the group (ie banners, sign-on-a-stick, flags)

Also might I recommend a stop by the art museum for some additional lulz(admission is 7$).

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

The 12th is the standard monthly. The 26th is the regional. No theme as far as I know, just a gathering of the tribes.

Yes, please bring consumables if you wish. Liquid refreshment would be highly appreciated by everyone (bottled water and sports drinks, especially).

Signs, yes, but sticks are verboten and will get you v&ed. Bring signs identifying your particular area of origin to emphasize the regional nature of the protest.

The Art Institute is within a few minutes' walk of our normal protest site. It's definitely worth the trip.

Re: EPIC CHICAGO PROTEST

I'm planning on bringing a bighuge(bout48) pack of 12oz water bottles. They sell for cheap, but I'm limited to bringing one because 4.5 gallons is all I can carry. Commuting via train has its disadvantages.

Also, is the internet my best bet to get a :guyfawkes: before the 12th?
