Stay classy internet detectives http://www.zerohedge.com/news/2013-04-25/falsely-identified-boston-bombing-suspect-found-dead
This poor guy disappeared from home 2 weeks before the bombing. Friends and family looked for him and posted You Tube videos asking him to come back. They were afraid he was suicidal. None of which changes the fact he was sought as a suspect by 4Chan etc. He was "doxed" by a high school friend.
Thank you. I hopes that the other news reports note that. Me thinks /tinfoil/ this will be left out and it will be another oh my we need more internet laws cause anon 4chan reddit are errorists.
Well maybe some should wind it in a bit and stop trying to be Internet heros, instead of going public with "evidence" in a desperate need to look clever/first/awesome the details should be passed on to real investigators who exist in the real world and don't just have access to their parents basement.
Any Intelligence Agency / Law Enforcement Agency, worth it's salt, would have had people climbing all over Reddit,4chan,Facebook & Twitter.
Yeah but they would be preoccupied with the finding the real criminals, not wasting time with some people's stupidity.
http://www.nytimes.com/2013/04/26/us/sunil-tripathi-student-at-brown-is-found-dead.html?probably died before the shit storm hit his family.
although to be fair, it's looking like he was in the river from before the bombings http://www.boston.com/metrodesk/201...ity-student/VdhQ9rI8u6nGJWsLlGuMuN/story.html (dental records used for ID) so the suicide probably predates the reddit-accusations
doesn't mean that posting his pic everywhere accusing him of all that shit was ok. Think of his family and friends.... Not to mention that they really sucked badly at internet detective work if they claimed a dead guy bombed boston.
Don't ever visit any of the Madeleine McCann forums still extant Mr. President or your head may explode.
Reddit didn't need to apologise after the Boston Marathon bombing None of the major news agencies apologised for their errors, so why all this pressure on Reddit? There are many things that people need to apologize for in the wake of the Boston Marathon bombing, but Reddit apologizing for users failing to follow site rules is nowhere near the top of the list. Yet, that's what we got on Monday from Reddit's general manager Erik Martin in an official Reddit blogpost: "However, though started with noble intentions, some of the activity on Reddit fueled online witchhunts and dangerous speculation which spiraled into very negative consequences for innocent parties. The Reddit staff and the millions of people on Reddit around the world deeply regret that this happened." http://www.guardian.co.uk/commentis...t-boston-marathon-bombing-apology-unnecessary
Did any of the major news agencies falsely accuse an innocent person of mass murder? (I'm guessing not).
