HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

/ edit

These people are paying customers, doing manual labor as part
of the Freewinds Leadership & Competence workshop.

They each paid thousands of dollars for the "privilege" of doing
hard physical labor on the Freewinds.

See post #67 for details

=============================================

Lots of photos here. As far as I can tell from the photos, paying scientology
customers are cleaning up the Freewinds, and climbing up and down the
outside of the ship on scaffolding.

Seriously, WTF?

Here's a few of the photos

I went to Flag with my step dad when I was 3 (1983 or 84). Another scilon from Ann Arbor went with us. We were there along with MANY public to renovate it. I remember being afraid of the Sea Org men in uniform. I remember having to eat the nasty food. I remember getting sick and throwing up suddenly in my dad's hands.

I keep meaning to get back down there. We had SUCH a laugh.

=)

A most intriguing find.
10. Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

They probably aren't worried about it, cause I'm sure Asbestos-related symptoms are all psychosomatic. They don't need Asbestos Suits.

I hope one of them dies to serve as an example against Scientology. You can't just wear a dusk mask to try to clean that shit up. For being the people that work the best at learning and finding out info, do a cursory search on wikipedia about the blue asbestos.... This shit is lethal.

Can't be arsed to find it, but weren't they sending out emails or fliers trying to get people to send their kids to clean that floating death trap? Camp Clean Up and Get Cancer or something like that?

Scientology related deaths are very common, I tried to link to the site,
http://whyaretheydead.info/.

That site gives info about very many deaths but that site is down.

LRH did not write any Policy Letters or Technical Bulletins about asbestos so it must be safe because if it was dangerous he would have warned them. It's like smoking. Not smoking ENOUGH gives you lung cancer.

Im a commerical flooring contractor and Im 3rd gen installer. Usually asbestos adhesive is black. Kentile and one other manufacturer still made 9x9 tiles that were not asbestos into the 70s. I couldnt be sure unless I was there but from the pictures I would have to say that is not asbestos.

I am curious where they are dumping the material though.

Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

I looked at it closer and enlarged the photo. It looks like carpet backing and adhesive over top of either green tile or a painted green flooring. According to law if the tile is not distrubed or broken with removal of any existing flooring over top it is ok. If it breaks or even one piece comes up they have to remove the whole thing.

Also it is legal for instance for the owner of the home or a ship in this case to remove it yourself as long as you dispose of it properly but considering this is a public commerical ship so idk.

Again Id have to see it to be sure.

Can anyone read the words in the bottom right of the first picture? Looks like Eco..... Something like that. I dont know. Still doesnt look like asbestos.

Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

Not trying to say you are wrong, but we already know that the Freewinds was built stuffed full of asbestos. In the walls, ceilings, everywhere.

So I think it is fair to say that it is up to the Freewinds to prove that the floor tiles were not made of asbestos. Freewinds was originally built as a car ferry, not a cruise ship for passengers.

Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

Could very well be asbestos. Again Id have to be there.

I dont know the laws for asbestos abatement on ships but alot to consider is where were they docked? Was it over international waters etc. Im sure they found a loop hole.

These are paying public. Probably doing the "Competence and Leadership Convention" that the Freewinds offers. They have you do physical work and drills on the ship. Amazing that the cult can get its members to not only work for free but pay to work.

Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

That's normal. You even have to pay them to kill you if you step out of line and ask too many questions. It's called the Introspection Rundown.

granted with any "church" there are volunteers who do several "volunteer like things" for their parish or whatever
but this is potentially dangerous and hazadous IMO

Wonder if they had to sign any waivers

Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

Sure looks like green concrete paint to me, not tile or linoleum. Which makes no sense, since the subflooring looks like the kind of old backing for carpets. Maybe there was a carpet at one time, but a carpet in that part of the ship makes no sense either. It would get soaked if raining and you opened the door. Conrete paint may have had lead.

Subflooring and adhesives look pretty old. Also, some photos with people without masks on. Not that these masks are sufficient. Usually, materials have to be water sprayed to keep fibers from flying around, and special filtering vacuums used, not brooms.

At any rate, this should have been inspected by a specialist to determine what materials contain and proper removal procedures and regulations from inspection before any work was done.

Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

This is a very old practice with sci. New building purchases (the org in San Francisco was refurbished this way) are done by area staff. Scraping lead-filled paint without a mask or any relevant skill-set was typical. I have never known of insured & bonded professionals to do any work of this kind. Landscaping and other jobs have been done at no cost this way too.

Basic formula:
1 - buy a property with donated money.
2 - refurbish at no cost. No workers comp, so social security, retirement, no problem.
3 - property goes up in value.
4 - charge $ for people to use the facility.
5 - profit.

Re: HOLY SHIT, Freewinds cleanup May 2010

I thought the asbestos on the Freewinds was mainly sprayed onto walls and bulkheads. (Don't let that stop a good OMGASBESTOS!!1! thread. Carry on.)

It was wrapped around the ventilation pipes as well. If the other asbestos was sealed with paint, the stuff around the pipes woulda flexed, releasing asbestos shreds into the air.
