Some got the medals for dissemination obviously and kickbacs.

I've been thinking this for a while, but what comes to mind for me is that these are ordinary people who really really want to be extraordinary. And these events give them that. Everyone has their stepping out clothes on, there are photographers and music and lights and even real celebrities. They are SOMEBODY. That's worth a lot to some people.
