CNS) Posted Wednesday May 25, 2011 – 2:50pmCouncilman Tom LaBonge called for an investigation today into proposed demolition work on the site of KCET studios, which was sold to the Church of Scientology in April.
LaBonge said he introduced an emergency motion after his office received calls from concerned constituents that demolition had begun on parts of the studio near the intersection of Sunset and Hollywood boulevards in Silver Lake.
``I don't want to see the land of the studio not have a full historic review,' LaBonge said.
The councilman said he had inquired with the city's planning department about what, if any, review had been done and had not received a sufficient answer.
The site, at 4401 W. Sunset Blvd, has been a film and television studio production facility since 1912 and is listed as a Los Angeles Historic Cultural Monument.
KCET sold the lot after breaking from PBS to become an independent public television station in January.
The church had begun removing a section of brick pavers with the names of major KCET donors inscribed on them. At issue is whether those bricks fall under the site's cultural monument status.
Department of Building and Safety spokesman Dave Lara said an inspector was sent to KCET today, and the church was ordered to stop work until the planning department can accurately say which parts of the lot are covered under the city's historic preservation ordinance.
``Not every portion of that site is covered. We want to verify that those areas that are (covered) are not tampered with or removed illegally,' Lara said.
He added that it could be a few days before anyone knows exactly which parts of the site are protected from demolition.
A representative of the Church of Scientology -- which had not filed any applications for demolition permits with the Department of Building and Safety as of Tuesday afternoon -- could not be immediately reached for comment.
The building and safety inspector informed Scientology representatives of the permitting process, according to Lara.
``Now they are aware,' he said. ``(The church) wants to try and get the project going as soon as possible. The church has worked with us in the past, and we're looking forward to continuing a good relationship.'

and I suppose they will be fined for that?
Redundent thread: http://forums.whyweprotest.net/thre...urch-of-scientology.78558/page-4#post-1756899
Adding your name at the end of a post is pretty redundent too. This is a separate issue from the selling of the building, this deals with historic monuments.
They oughta check worker id cards. I bet a lot of them are Sea Ogres. Maybe some youngsters, too.
For anyone else that wants to send relavent 'poons Councilman LaBonge's office contact info can be found at: http://www.tomlabonge.com/contact/
Or, for those too lazy to look:
Those of us who have done it since before you were a glint in your mother's eye will probably continue doing it until they die. Hey, it took me a couple years to break the habit, too.
What...are you slumming???? When did you get back?
Psych ward released him early for good behavior. Imagine.
He's faking it.
usual scientology complete lack of respect for ANYTHING except scientology
Who gives a shit about wogs?
Its their Hubbard-given rights to fuck with any damned thing they please............... until caught.........then it's 'Ooops-so-sorry' 'Wasn't us' 'We're trying to do good here leave us alone' 'It was 'their' fault' blah-blah-blah-saving the world-blady-blah.
Well, it turns out it was actually KCET doing the work. Might have saved everyone the aggrivation if they'd notified the city first.
Even so, I hope the Councilman keeps on eye on this project for things like "volunteers" working without the proper safety equipment, or doing things that are supposed to be done by a licensed contractor.
