Using the demonstrative adjective "This" in the title implies that Esquire had actually obtained the letter to Conan and was publishing it in the story, which is misleading, since they do no such thing.

It was not the only error, either. That guy needs to proofread his copy before it gets published, and his editor, too.

However I’m not writing this piece to recap the entire show or summarize the horrors experienced within the walls of the Church, as I feel like I could not do anybody justice if I tried. (If you’re looking for an in-depth look at every aspect of the Church I would highly recommend the 2015 HBO documentary “Going Clear: Scientology and the Prison of Belief”). I’m writing this piece because as somebody who went into this show purely to laugh, I came out of the other end with a completely changed perspective.

These people, often born into the Church and who know no other life, have lost their money, friends, and families. There are so many stories that end with parents never having seen their children again after literally escaping the Church. Laughing at those trapped in Scientology trivializes their actual pain and suffering. And these people are not stupid, most of the time they are just lost and looking for something greater. At it’s most basic form, the ideology of Scientology is a mix between psychoanalysis and self-help. Its really not that insane that so many are attracted to its initial message of bettering yourself to better the world. By the time most of these people reach the level that reveals the “creation story” involving aliens and whatnot, they are in too deep financially and emotionally to completely drop everything they’ve ever known.

Leah Remini’s A&E series is publicly creating a network of former Scientologists that could possibly save more and more people from the physical and mental abuses of the Church. I also see the series as a call to action for those who have never been involved with the Church. By spreading awareness of the actual cruelties of Scientology, and not just the “laughable” aspects, those who have a voice outside of the organization can speak up for those who remain trapped inside.

They are also enslaving people mentally and financially world wide and it's all happening in YOUR own back yard.

Leah provides some rare insight into the severe pressures placed on Scientologists taking the highest level courses for exorbitant prices under air-tight supervision and CIA style handling of the materials involved.

In particular, Leah's detailed account of her intense course: OTIII - The Wall of Fire. She's got a grim case supervisor looking over her shoulder and her Mom (OTVIII) sitting across from her nodding effusively while she reads the wild LRH claims of her current body being infested with countless body thetan alien-beings from 75 trillion years ago after Lord Xenu had them blown up in volcanos with hydrogen bombs. She's having a WTF moment and is not going along like her Mom and many others have, this is the start of her real doubts, I believe.

Most Scientologists are really good people and after enough total indoctrination will believe just about anything especially with the consequences of showing any doubt. It's quite a dilemma. I know many still in, sadly, still deluded. They all call her a vicious liar now after having properly admired her for so long while she was still in.

One day these same current Scientologists will wake up and thank her for doing so much at a high price to help them get a new start outside of this abusive, controlling cult that has taken advantage of them all for so long.

The one thing that strikes me about Leah Remini and the reasons for her involvement in exposing the dangers of Scientolomogy is her honesty. Pure and simple honesty, it comes across so clearly because it's so genuine. She's always wanted to help others, she is now, more so than she'll ever know.

Her concern and followup on Shelly Miscavige's disappearance has been tremendous. ''She's being held prisoner (if not, in a prison of her own mind.)'' Exactly!

Thank You, Leah, for all who are still trapped in Hubbard's controlling, abusive scam of Scientology. Stay Strong!

Leah Remini books the Bill Maher show, gets swung at by Giovanni Ribisi

That’s the bad news. Here’s the good news: Leah tells us she’s been booked for Maher’s February 17 episode.

Since her nine-episode A&E series concluded three weeks ago, Leah has remained in the public eye after Leah Remini: Scientology and the Aftermath ended up being a huge hit for the cable channel.

She’s appeared on Conan O’Brien’s talk show, and on Joe Rogan’s popular podcast, and Maher’s program should really be a treat: Maher has been poking Scientology in the eye for many years. (But knowing Maher, we have a feeling he might take Scientology’s side against Leah just for fun.)

Leah’s raised profile is bringing some interesting reactions. Last week, for example, singer Lance Bass made news when he said that he had spent a brief time in Scientology, and it was Leah’s fault!

Actually, Bass has been telling that story for some time. When Leah’s book came out in 2015, he spoke up and said that Leah had “sponsored” him for the Hollywood Celebrity Centre when she was still in the church. On an episode of the Meredith Vieira Show that November, Bass said he was never really a “member” of Scientology, but he did benefit from some of the “therapy” he said he received there during his short association with it.

He said essentially the same thing last week in a podcast with comedian Heather McDonald, but this time it caught fire on the Internet.

Bass said that he had visited the Celebrity Centre about five times over a month and paid a total of about $200. When he was getting pressured to take more expensive courses, he stopped going.

Leah says there was more to Lance’s experience with Scientology that has never come out. She says that what Lance wanted was marriage counseling to help him figure out a failing relationship, and Leah was concerned when she realized that’s not what he was getting at the Celebrity Centre.

“He called me for help, so I brought him in. He was asking for some kind of marriage counseling. But later I asked what we were doing for them, and I was told that they wouldn’t get that kind of counseling because they were gay,” Leah says. “I told them I didn’t understand why they weren’t giving Lance and his boyfriend what they were asking for. It didn’t look like we were trying to help them.”

Leah says a Celebrity Centre official told her, “Our experience is that people who come in who are gay are 1.1, and they end up blowing off anyway, so we don’t want to invest much time in them.”

That’s a reference to L. Ron Hubbard’s “emotional tone scale” that Scientologists believe maps out emotional states. Near the bottom of the scale is 1.1 for “covert hostility” — people who might present a pleasant front but are plotting to harm you when they can. Hubbard said that homosexuals were 1.1, and he called homosexuality a “perversion.” Ex-Scientologists say the organization took that to heart and the church is deeply homophobic. Anyone judged 1.1 would be required to do “auditing” to raise their “tone level” — in other words, Scientology holds itself out as a gay cure.

“I felt bad. Lance had come to me and Scientology couldn’t help him. I don’t think anyone in Scientology can deny that there aren’t many gay people in Scientology, as well as ethnic minorities. There’s really no diversity in Scientology,” Leah says. “They’re really not interested in the LGBT community because of what Hubbard said.”

Besides Scientology’s homophobia, Leah shined a bright light on the organization’s many controversies and alleged abuses during her series. And yesterday, one of its celebrities struck back at her.

Appearing on a Sirius FM radio show to promote his new Amazon Prime series, Sneaky Pete, Giovanni Ribisi was asked about Leah’s series and what he thought about it. Last year, we wrote that Vonnie is in a very precarious situation — his daughter, Lucia, has spoken out about leaving Scientology, while Giovanni’s parents are among the old guard’s most hardcore bitter-enders. On the radio yesterday, Ribisi seemed not to have actually seen Leah’s show:

I'm firmly in the LOL Xenu camp because it works and it helps people. No doubt, Scientology's brand is hugely toxic resulting in an inability to recruit new "raw meat". Good job. However, that's not all the LOL Xenu approach provides. By continuing to mock Scientology via LOL Xenu, the entire edifice is reduced to an internationally-ridiculed laughing stock. This has huge benefits in terms of negating Scientology's incessant safe-pointing in the governmental and law enforcement arenas. Maintain the mockery, I say.

Also, the idea that your average, common or garden variety wog is going to be able to convince wavering Scilons to abandon their Scientology demonstrates a flawed understanding of Scientology and the effect it has on the minds of those it controls.

Scientology teaches "that news is a bad place, that the news lies"

President Trump’s inauguration ushered in a new war between a fact-free administration and a free press.

“The media should be embarrassed and humiliated and keep its mouth shut and just listen for a while,” Trump Strategist Steve Bannon told The New York Times on Thursday. “The media here is the opposition party. They don’t understand this country. They still do not understand why Donald Trump is the president of the United States.”

For actress and former scientologist, Leah Remini, Trump’s distrust in the media was a very familiar sentiment.

“From the very beginning of the teachings in Scientology you were taught that news is a bad place, that the news lies, that’s what they do, they’re the business of lies,” Remini told host Conan O’Brien when she guest-starred on “Conan” this week.

“So you’re saying Trump is a scientologist?” Conan asked her.

The crowd roared. Remini then relayed more of her teachings.

“Parishioners believe, because we are told every day, ‘We are doing amazing things for the world, for mankind’, so you’re trained and conditioned to believe that good news will not get out there, specifically toward Scientology,” she said.

According to Remini, “the brainwashing begins very early on.”

“If you do see something on the internet, remember, this organization requires that you go in every single day, two and a half hours a day — the minimum — 7 days a week — so you are conditioned to believe that looking on the internet or.. reading something that is critical to your church is a transgression, is a sin, so you feel compelled to say that the very next day, because you’re going in every day,” she explained.

O’Brien then asked her what would happen, should someone criticize the church.

“You would need to then go into the church of Scientology and say, ‘I have to tell you, I read this article in Newsweek or Time Magazine or I saw this documentary and they said these things and then you would have to atone for it?” he hypothesized.

Remini confirmed she would be “punished and interrogated” for why she actively sought out these materials and went against the people “single handedly saving mankind.”

“It’s not that information wasn’t there.. I chose not to look because the repercussions of doing so were great,” she pointed out “And if I said ‘Well, screw it, I’m gonna look anyway, and screw it, I’m gonna continue to question what I’m doing and what I’m hearing about,’ then they would go after your family… so you just learned.”

I see a huge irony in an "independent scientologist" characterizing an ex-scientologist as "clueless and should put down the crack pipe."

When a high-flying, productive Kha-Khan suddenly turns and becomes Suppressive, aren't they still entitled to nine more times of being forgiven? Why won't Ethics tear up their chit?

Would love to see a "Big List" style, recounting of former Kha-Khans who were cheated out of one or more of their "10 death penalty" quota.
