The only way you'll become an egofag Marc is if you decide you're gay and start wearing a pope hat ;)

Marc, I'm the one who questioned the choice of MR. I'd like to say that you certainly don't owe anyone an explanation, least of all me.

Btw, what I didn't say is that the book is terrific and I'm thoroughly enjoying reading it.

I think Marty has done a lot for the cause. Arguably the SP Times articles and Nightline wouldn't have happened if he hadn't been a driving force behind both.

Having said that, I don't think he's come as far along as you have since leaving the Church, with his current adherence to the "tech." Maybe he never will, and that's fine. That's his trip.

Just the difference in tone and style between your story and his intro made for a bit of a contrast is what I was trying to say.

Anyway, best of luck with the book, love to hear an update, it certainly looks like you're doing well with getting the word out about it!

Re: Marty wrote the Foreword to Blown for Good

Marty has more to gain by sticking with 'the tech' - Marc is in a great position to be an outspoken critic, but not in a good spot to be the 'pope' of a new religion. Marty is in that position, and from a simple cost/benefit consideration, it makes sense that Marty would take that role upon himself. Similarly, it makes sense that Marc would market his book to the widest possible audience - exes, critics, independents, curiosity-seekers, and people 'still in.'

I don't mean this as a pejorative 'they're all in it for the money' - I mean it in a 'everybody has an angle, even me, and even you' way. And we're often not aware of our own angles. I've heard a phrase many times whose origins I don't know, but which I strongly believe - 'you will never convince a man that God does not exist if his career depends on his believing in God.' This applies to almost everything.

Marty's career path right now is that of 'new messiah.' Marc's is as 'writer (with an interesting backstory)'. And from our own selfish goals, as a group who wishes to 'destroy the church of scientology in its present form', both of those people greatly serve OUR interests. Strange bedfellows, unlikely alliance, etc - but what it all comes down to is there's a synergy in our diverse sets of goals.

This is the first time I've heard anyone mention the possibility of Marty Rathbun appearing on Marc's side in the lawsuit, and would be a most welcome development, coming amidst the gasps of surprise at his contributing the foreword to Blown For Good.

But, a note of caution: everyone who blows the cult gets handled, and Miscavige knows Rathbun's buttons, as Rathbun knows Marc's.

Until and unless MR starts providing something of tangible value, it would seem an enormous risk to allow him into the heart of the suit, or to place him in any position of trust.

What are the odds of MR being turned?

Re: Marty wrote the Foreword to Blown for Good

It was first mentioned a while ago by Marc's Lawyer, Barry Van Sickle, in one of the case discussion threads.

btw, I think having Rathbun do the foreward was a clever idea.
  13. Re: Marty wrote the Foreword to Blown for Good

Oh, must've missed that little nugget. Thanks, Sponge.

btw, Marty had a big MU - the word, before the rest of the words, is the foreword. 'A word said before something else; hence, an introduction, a preface' - OED. Don't get caught out by his failtech - 'False data, origin obsc. fr. SP subculture, c. 2008' - OSA ED (Oxford Scilon - Anon Etym. Dict.)

    Rathbun acts like a sociopath.

In his OSA days, he didn't mind screwing over vast numbers of people when he thought it was in his interests.

You know, when it was power, prestige and whatever else involved. It was all about himand...FU** everyone else.

These days, there is possibly/probably more money, power, prestige, pu**y and whatever involved...for him.

The odds of him being turned are exactly the same as the odds of him turning from being motivated by his own selfish perceived interests to being motivated by the interests of "the greatest number of dynamics".

IMO, this would be comparable to the biblical Saul being 'zapped' on the road to Damascus and becoming Paul.

Yeah. Rathbun's misguided twisted HUGE EGO is still intact, so, he's gonna have to get 'knocked off his horse' before any real change can occur.

Remember, Elron was on drugs, unkempt, wild haired, 'nine inch nails', crazy as a sh** house rat, on the run from the law, living in an RV, etc. and still wouldn't concede that he had been wrong.

He chose to die in his pathetic ignorance. Wretched ego still intact.

Marc not using Graham Berry as a lawyer? That could explain a lot.

Scientology has been fucking with people and destroying families since it's inception.

Don't swallow this crap about "true tech". It's all manipulative coersive crap to take your life and your family from you. This arsehole is just pushing his pathetic 'wins' to recruit people into his new mini cult.

  25. Re: Marty wrote the Foreword to Blown for Good

I do get where you're coming from, so I'm reluctant to say "go fuck yourself." But as far as Marc Headley (consciously or unconsciously) being "in it for the money," I call bullshit.

I agree that base motives often lie behind purportedly noble causes (lawsuits involving $$$ being a prime example), but you do realise that since leaving the CofS, BFG setup a multimillion dollar company.

Given that one of OSA's standard lines of attack is to cut off an opponent's finance "lines," (something they've done very effectively, and entirely legally on many occasions) whichever way you cut it, Marc had a HELL of a lot more to lose than he did gain by taking on the cult in the manner in which he has.

Everything I've seen of him, points to him being a man of true integrity, and people like that are very very rare.

So take the mickey out of him, question his sanity for choosing to associate with "us lot", but please don't damn him with a glib generalisations, however true they may be for the majority of people.

Now Marty on the other hand...

    Less than 9000???

    is that valid?
  27. Re: Marty wrote the Foreword to Blown for Good

Sounds pretty valid to me, given that informed estimates (namely Monsieur Headley reckons there're about 15,000 to 20,000 Scienos total).

Re: Marty wrote the Foreword to Blown for Good

I didn't mean it as simply as 'he's in it for the money.' What I mean is this - everyone has an angle. And that's not a bad thing. Saying 'everyone is self-interested' is not the same as saying 'everyone is selfish.' My point is simple: You will never lose money (in the long run) by betting on people acting out of self-interest. Altruism is a myth; for an action to be truly altruistic, it must be an unmotivated, intentioned action. These two ideas - unmotivated action and intentioned action - are contradictory.

Headley may well (and as far as I know is) motivated by the desire to help humanity, and the knowledge that scientology hurts humanity. Why would he want to help humanity? Because he's a part of humanity - and thus he has an interest in it. To be quite blunt, the same is true of Rathburn - though his interpretation of what is helpful and what is harmful differs greatly from Headley's (whose views more closely match mine). Oh, yes, btw... my actions are self-interested too. I'm man enough to admit that, to resist the urge to pretend I'm altruistically helping the rest of you fuckers out. Of course, the urge to make such a claim is quite strong, as anyone who convincingly makes that boast is entitled to free beer anywhere they go.

In the book 'Scientology Ethics', hubbard claimed his 'great' philosophical discovery was that man was basically good. He twisted and butt-fucked the idea like this: man is basically good; there are SPs (people who are basically bad), but even SPs are ultimately basically good, and thus they want to die and stop hurting people (by working against scientology), and thus it's an act of mercy to kill an SP. Well, first, this argument takes for granted that scientology actually helps (universally) those who employ it. That premise is never proven, nor is any evidence provided for it, but it's taken axiomatically. Second, his 'great discovery' is NOTHING FUCKING NEW. If he had one shred of familiarity with the history of philosophy, he'd know there have been hundreds of philosophers who have argued that same basic point. Socrates said 'no man knowingly does wrong.' Mencius argued that man is inherently good, and offered as his proof this scenario: if any person is walking through the woods and stumbles upon a well in which 1) someone is stuck and 2) all one must do to rescue them is drop a rope ladder (that is already there) down, that person will do so. Is Hubbard familiar with either Socrates or Mencius? Certainly not - he betrays his ignorance a thousand times in his awful writing.

Everybody acts out of self-interest. Self-interest (generally) works out for good. This understanding of human psychology will serve you greatly when trying to comprehend the mind, motives, and future actions of those you oppose - and those you support.
