Dan Weaver will be speaking to us about Canadian government obstruction of science, and the efforts of Evidence for Democracy to combat it. As most of you are aware, science in Canada has been struggling lately, especially if you are working for the federal government. Many scientists have complained of being muzzled, and needing to jump through numerous hops before they are allowed to talk to the press or the public. These scientists are conducting research that is supposedly done to benefit Canadians, and is paid for by your tax dollars, but access to the information discovered is increasingly difficult.

Evidence for Democracy is an organisation composed of Canadian scientists, and among their goals are restoring public access, and allowing scientists to communicate their findings without censorship.

Dan Weaver is a PhD candidate in atmospheric physics at the University of Toronto. His work primarily revolves around measurements taken at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) on Ellesmere Island, near Eureka, Nunavut.

Unfortunately Dan Weaver was down with the flu, but hopefully can give the talk at a later date. (Didn't he get his flu shot?)

Good news: Dan Weaver, who was unable to speak in January, is now over his illness and is ready to go again. He will enlighten us about the current state of affairs regarding federal Government restrictions on science and scientists, and what Evidence For Democracy is attempting to do about it. He may also take some time to tell us about his current research with PEARL, the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory.

Dan Weaver is a scientist, educator, and advocate for science funding and evidence-based government decision making. He currently sits on the Board of Directors of Evidence for Democracy, a new national organization whose campaigns have included the Science: Uncensored website and petition aimed at ending the muzzling of government scientists, and the Stand up for Science rallies – which drew crowds of Canadians in support of science in the public interest in 17 cities across the country.

As an educator, Dan has taught in classrooms, contributed to textbooks, created and implemented educational programs for organizations such as Science Rendezvous, and frequently contributed to connecting University researchers with the broader community.
Dan is also a Ph.D. candidate in atmospheric physics at the University of Toronto. His work primarily involves analysis of measurements taken at the Polar Environment Atmospheric Research Laboratory (PEARL) on Ellesmere Island, near Eureka, Nunavut. When PEARL’s funding was cut in 2012, he began advocating for the restoration of funds through “Save PEARL” social media campaigns.
