Scientology detox programmes: expensive and unproven

There is no evidence Scientology's 'Purif' and 'Narconon' detox work, and the megadoses of vitamins involved may harm health

The Church of Scientology's detox programmes are becoming popular in many countries, including the UK.
    Photograph: Sarah Lee/Guardian
Imagine a therapy that "enables an individual to rid himself of the harmful effects of drugs, toxins and other chemicals that lodge in the body and create a biochemical barrier to spiritual well-being". If you were told that the treatment was entirely natural and had already "enabled hundreds of thousands to free themselves from the harmful effects of drugs and toxins and so achieve spiritual gains", wouldn't you be tempted to try it?

Who doesn't want a body free of nasty chemicals? And who wouldn't be delighted at the chance to counter a growing threat to an "advancement in mental … wellbeing"?

These claims are being made for the "Purification Rundown" ("Purif" for short) and the closely related Narconon detox programmes, which mainly consist of regular exercise, sauna and nutrition, with industrial doses of vitamins and minerals added for good measure. Some of the claims are quite specific: the Purif programme is supposed to increase your IQ, reduce the level of cancer-causing agents in your body, and even enable you to lose weight easily and quickly. The Narconon programme is more specifically targeted at drug and alcohol dependency and is claimed to have an impressive success rate of 75%.

Both programmes were developed by L Ron Hubbard (1911-1986) and are currently marketed by the Church of Scientology. The CoS is not generally known to be an organisation that promotes healthcare programmes. Hubbard, the pulp-fiction writer who founded the CoS, portrayed himself somewhat over-optimistically as a pioneer, innovator and nuclear physicist.

He taught his followers that, at their core, humans contain a "thetan". After creating the universe, thetans accidentally became trapped in physical bodies and, through scientology, we can restore the immortal, omnipotent, god-like powers of the "thetan" within us. Weird stuff that is the preserve of Hollywood eccentrics, you might think, but perhaps the CoS's detox-ventures are an attempt to conquer new territory?

After years of clever promotion, the CoS detox programmes are now becoming popular in many countries, including the UK. They bring in good money. In 2009, the CoS was reported to charge $5,200 (£3,300) for the Purif programme and the price for the Narconon programme is reportedly even higher.

A typical course of treatment lasts several weeks and consists of many hours of exercise and sauna every day. This regimen is supplemented with megadoses of vitamins and minerals, which can cause problems. Niacin, one vitamin that is given in high doses as part of the regimen, can be particularly dangerous. The US National Institutes of Health warns that at high doses it can cause "liver problems, gout, ulcers of the digestive tract, loss of vision, high blood sugar, irregular heartbeat, and other serious problems." It should not be taken by people who already have liver damage.

Seven fatalities of people undergoing the Narconon programme are currently being investigated in Oklahoma, although the CoS says these deaths are not connected with the treatment regimen itself.

Whatever the truth regarding these deaths, a review of the evidence about the treatment regimen's effectiveness – carried out by the Norwegian Knowledge Centre for the Health Services in 2008 – found no good evidence that the Narconon programme works:
There is currently no reliable evidence for the effectiveness of Narconon as a primary or secondary drug prevention program. This is partly due to the insufficient research evidence about Narconon and partly due to the non-experimental nature of the few studies that exist.
The claim that such detox treatments eliminate toxins from the body is, of course, easily testable. All we would need to do is define what toxin we are talking about and measure the change in levels of that toxin compared with a control group of volunteers who did not receive the detox.
But such studies are not available. Why? Do the marketing men believe in their own claims?

Maybe they feel that profits and evidence are like fire and water? Or possibly the thetans have an aversion to science?

If you think that the Purif, Narconon or any other form of alternative detox eliminates toxins, you might be mistaken. Most clients have lost some money, many have lost their ability to think straight, some may even have lost their lives. But there is no reliable evidence that they have actually lost any toxins.

This looks good. Maybe we can get a doctor with access to the journal to give us the whole thing somehow? Maybe someone can write to Dr. Ernst asking for permission to use the article on the webs, for great justice?

    Abstract

    BACKGROUND:

The concept that alternative therapies can eliminate toxins and toxicants from the body, i.e. 'alternative detox' (AD) is popular.
    SOURCES OF DATA:

Selected textbooks and articles on the subject of AD.
    AREAS OF AGREEMENT:

The principles of AD make no sense from a scientific perspective and there is no clinical evidence to support them.
    AREAS OF CONTROVERSY:

The promotion of AD treatments provides income for some entrepreneurs but has the potential to cause harm to patients and consumers.
    GROWING POINTS:

In alternative medicine, simplistic but incorrect concepts such as AD abound. AREAS TIMELY FOR RESEARCH: All therapeutic claims should be scientifically tested before being advertised-and AD cannot be an exception.

SCIENTOLOGISTS have tricked their way into primary schools posing as drugs campaigners, The Sun can reveal.

Thousands of pupils have sat through classes inspired by the cult — while parents were kept in the dark.
The Sun has discovered anti-drugs group Narconon has even claimed the backing of some of the UK’s biggest High Street names and bagged cash from the Queen’s bank Coutts.
Our probe found that Narconon — which is inspired by the work of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard — been visiting schools in Newham, East London, and Islington, North London, for four years.

Its own literature reveals more than 2,000 children a year have sat through its lectures. A newsletter said: “The result was thousands of children empowered with the Truth about Drugs.”
The charity uses “technologies” taught by the Church of Scientology — whose followers include Hollywood star Tom Cruise — to help people overcome addiction.
Scientology and cult expert Steve Hassan warned schools to steer clear of Narconon. He said: “I would tell school officials that they need to do their due diligence and research Narconon. It is indeed a Scientology entity — to make money and new recruits. They are particularly interested in wealthy individuals and their families and while they might help stop the drug addiction, they then have a cult problem.”
After Narconon visited St Jude and St Paul’s Primary School in Islington, mum Amanda Steele, 30, said: “These aren’t the sort of people I want to come in to teach my kids about drugs. In fact I don’t want them to come anywhere near them.”

Newham Council had no idea the Sussex-based group was linked to Scientology until The Sun got involved, and said it would warn all schools in the area.
Newham children’s boss Linzi Roberts-Egan said: “The safety of children is important to us so we thank The Sun for bringing this to our attention.”

    Narconon ... website

Narconon was founded by the late William Benitez who became a devoted follower of Scientology while in prison on drugs offences. He has made no secret of Hubbard’s influence on the group.
Narconon boasts of links to High Street names including Marks & Spencer and John Lewis — but both retailers denied any involvement.

Narconon has also persuaded prestigious bank Coutts and car maker Ford into donating towards its Truth About Drugs project. Both companies admitted handing over small sums but refused to say if they knew about the group’s cult links.
Narconon’s newsletter also implied it had backing from Chelsea through former player and anti-drugs and racism campaigner Paul Canoville, 50.
Paul said: “I’m angry. I would like to make it clear that I have no connections with this cult whatsoever.”
Scientology believes humans are haunted by the spirits of aliens massacred with hydrogen bombs on Earth 75million years ago.
A spokesman for the Church of Scientology said: “Narconon is a network of charitable drug rehabilitation and drug education organisations that utilise the discoveries of L. Ron Hubbard to address the problem of drug abuse.
“Narconons are secular in nature and are not part of the Church of Scientology.”

    from 2000:
    http://www.holysmoke.org/narconon/narconon-robber.htm

A career bank robber was jailed for life after he admitted a string of armed raids in West Kent and East Sussex to pay for private drug rehabilitation treatment.
Terence Stone, 37, claimed he fell back into heroin addiction after the Home Office cut funding from a drug programme run by the Church of Scientology.

.......After the hearing, Narcanon Trustee Sheila MacLean told the Courier: "Terence Stone learned of the Narconon drug rehabilitation method - a secular programme developed by humanitarian L. Ron Hubbard - and was making good progress on the programme before it came to light that he had committed criminal offences that needed to be put to rights.
"Sadly, he was unable to continue on the rehabilitation programme, as he had been able to complete it whilst in prison, statistics show that he is unlikely to have reverted to either drugs or crime. "Independent examination of the Narconon programme's results have shown a 70 per cent full success rate in terms of no further drug use, acknowledged as far superior to results of any other programme.

He did some scientology training in LA (a couple of years)and has been in scientology since around 1990.
He promotes Scientology front group Narconon with his wife Helen Gauci.
No listings of Scientology completions for Paul Gauci's wife Helen Gauci - does anyone know her scientology cult involvement, years in the cult or maiden name that scientology completions for her might be listed?

young person in front is michelle davies

the lady in the back is angela garcia, from nn int was here from 2008 until 2011, used to go back every 6 months then come back on a new 6 month visa. she was the ED in charge. i belive she was kicked out of nn in 2011. as never been seen since and his not spoken about.

Michelle Davies was a drug user who did the scientology narconon programme and then got recruited into the Scientology cult. She is quoted in this news report 2nd August 2012:
    http://www.standard.co.uk/news/lond...mary-school-children-about-drugs-8001058.html

Michelle Davies is in Nuneaton UK working as a mobile hairdresser.
On August 6th on her facebook page says she is :

now doing some counseling for people coming off drugs and alcohol, and I do this on the telephone, or in person if you are local. I'm offering advise for addicts and their families, and also trying to get the person the help they need, usually rehab...so please call me if there is anything you think I may be able to help with. My number is ....................

so it looks like she's still recruiting for scientology unless she's left the cult in the last month. Scientology would possibly be paying her the finders fee for recruiting 'students' into Narconon.

Michelle Davies did the Narconon programme in 2008 - so has been in Scientology for 4 years.

Michelle had a relationship with a student at hasting, while she was a ed in training, they ran off together and left the centre during the night, she was fired for losing them a student, she then started using heroin again, she was taken to nn holland were she re did some of the course, she now lives at home with her dad
