Veterans beaten and arrested at Occupy Boston. People were shoving from all directions, so it was hard to get a clear shot of what was going on. But yes, the BPD used force against those veterans, as well as other protestors, protecting the Rose Kennedy Garden Greenway. Around 100 people were arrested.

FDIC Votes to Approve Volcker Rule for Banks

U.S. regulators on Tuesday released for public comment the Volcker rule proposal that will restrict Wall Street's ability to trade for its own profit, setting off what is expected to be a fierce lobbying campaign to weaken the crackdown.

Regulators are giving the public until January 13, 2012, to comment on the proposal. That is longer than expected and could result in more pressure to change elements of the rule.

The proposal includes more than 350 questions that regulators want interested parties to weigh in on.

Why 'Occupy Wall Street' Protests? America's High Rates of Poverty & Income Inequality

On the heels of the US government's announcement that personal income of Americans has dropped for the first time in two years, Britain's Richard Wilkinson -- co-author with Kate Pickett of the book Spirit Level: Why Equality is Better for Everyone -- came to Washington this month to talk with Congress about income inequality and its deleterious impacts on society.

Whether any of this will be news to an American audience is doubtful, as no one is under the illusion that the US is doing well economically. In fact, last month Americans learned they have the highest poverty rate since the second world war (one in six Americans living below the poverty line) and the highest youth poverty rate (one in five young people, with Hispanic youth suffering most). Last month also concluded multiple "Made in America" tours by the congressional black and progressive caucuses who were responding to the cry of the unemployed, which is only getting louder and more desperate. More recently, the Warren Buffett-inspired tax debate, regarding whether millionaires should pay at least the same tax rate as the common worker, has surfaced fractiously, pitting President Obama and Democrats against most Republicans. Underlying these recent trends, the US still maintains one the highest income inequality rates among all wealthy countries.

How vexing it is to witness America's inability to push for policies that could ensure more economic equality. Paradoxically enough, many Americans believe that they are already in the middle-upper tier of income earners or will eventually end up there. This inspires a reluctance to enact policies that would more equitably balance economic burden-sharing. America's increasing poverty rates may finally change this dynamic as a September 20 Gallup poll points out: Those who supported raising taxes on the rich outnumbered opponents by 66% to 32%.

America's past penchant for income inequality, however, is not financially sustainable, let alone morally excusable or philosophically justifiable by capitalists who claim this to be inherent in the system. This is where Wilkinson and Pickett's data is useful. It shows that with income inequality comes with a host of health and social problems. The higher a country's income inequality, the higher its infant mortality rates, obesity rates, homicide rates, illiteracy rates, mental illness rates, teenage births, incarceration rates, drug addiction rates, social immobility and lower life expectancy. In other words, the bigger the gap between a nation's rich and poor populations, the greater dysfunction in that nation's society.

It may come as no surprise to some that America has the highest income inequality among the entire rich world. It was developed largely in the last 30 years, exacerbated by tax policies that benefited the rich at the expense of the poor. It became increasingly difficult for Americans to get ahead, get insured, get educated and get a job, all of which helps with getting respect. Consequently, the bulk of America's economic growth over the last 30 years has gone to the top one-100th of 1%, who make $27m annually per household, leaving 90% of American households to subsist on roughly $30,000 a year.

Name a rich country and our inequality rates beat them by a long shot -- though it's hardly something to brag about. We also have the highest rates of homicide, infant mortality, teenage births, drug addiction, mental illness, incarceration, social immobility and illiteracy. Name the social ill and we excel at it.

These health and social problems wreak financial havoc on our society -- not only in terms of lost productivity and potential, but also in terms of costs associated with containing the violence, healing the sick, and fixing the dysfunction. With each homicide, for example, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention calculate that the economy loses $1.65m in medical costs, loss of lifelong employment and economic productivity costs. With each prisoner, the US spends on average $35,000 per year for a total of $80bn annually for its correctional system. Add to this the total cost of lost productivity of the incarcerated, which is another $97.7bn. And don't forget violent crime, which cost America $94bn in 2009.

Today 10:35 AM Bank of America Gets Trashed

This morning, the group Action Now conducted a vacant home clean-up on the West Side. The group of "mothers and grandmothers ages 55 to 80" removed garbage and furniture from Bank of America-owned properties before bringing the trash downtown--where a group of protesters assembled.

The group dumped bags of trash labeled "Property of Bank of America" inside and outside a bank branch at LaSalle and Adams. HuffPost's Lizzie Schiffman reports that the group--of more than 100 people--plans to occupy the bank. Police are on the scene, but no arrests have been reported as of 12:30 p.m.

Edelman was a corporate raider in the late 1980s, known for going after big American companies like Burlington Industries, Lucky Stores and the Fruehauf Corporation.

Some of the Occupy Boston protesters who were arrested early yesterday morning remained defiant as they waited to face a judge and said the police response “shocked” them.

“It’s not a crime to gather and raise your voice,” said Khury Petersen-Smith, 29, of Dorchester. Petersen-Smith was one of the scores arrested on the Greenway. “For more than a week Occupy Boston hasn’t hurt anybody. It’s been a peaceful gathering and … such a violent response is shameful.”
Petersen-Smith was one of the protesters who was arraigned yesterday on charges of unlawful assembly and trespassing. Most were released after paying a $50 fine.

A total of 141 protesters were arrested when police moved in after the group refused requests to leave the Greenway section between Pearl and Congress streets...

AddictingInfo recently reported that U.S. Marines were joining the Occupy Wall Street protests. The Other 99% caught up to two of the men in uniform claiming to be among the protesting Marines.

When asked why they are protesting, one man said, “Different reasons. These wars that are going on, I don’t believe in them. I want my brothers and sisters to come back home. The bailout was a farce. It robbed American people.”

The other man answered, “Like the other 99 percent, I got forced into student loan debt that I’m never going to get out of. Because with two degrees and a full time job, I still don’t make enough to pay all my bills. I had to fight for my G.I. Bill by writing my Senator a couple of times. No, it gave me just enough money to buy books this semester.”

The cameraman then asked about a recent Sean Hannity show where he called a guest protester “unAmerican” and “Against freedom.”

“You know, that’s pretty funny. When they have these protests, violent protests overseas, we call ‘em democratic. The people are trying to get theirs. But as soon as we start doing ‘em here, they call us unpatriotic. So that’s, uh, very ironic that he would say something like that.”

“Is there anything that you would specifically tell him if he was here standing in front of you?” asked the cameraman

“I’d tell him to fuck off. That’s what I would tell him.”

“I think that’s the biggest load of shit I’ve ever heard,” said the other Marine. “Everyone here loves this country and wants to see it grow and wants to see it better. They love the people, they love their community, their neighbors. There hasn’t been racism here or bigotry. We get along as one big family, and that’s what we want for the rest of the country. All the people who are suffering in debt, who can’t speak for themselves, who are too afraid to voice their opinion, we’re here fighting for their rights.”

Occupy Toronto tells cops how to behave
TORONTO - Now it’s the protestors dictating to police how to act.

“To Chief Bill Blair and the Toronto Police Service,” starts a bizarre “open letter to the Toronto Police Service” on the Internet from organizers of the planned “Occupy Toronto” protest to copycat the Wall Street sit ins.
“In June, 2010, at the G20 summit Toronto saw the largest mass arrests in Canadian history,” states the letter. “Complaints too numerous to mention were filed against police officers, and many of the investigations and law suits that resulted from that weekend will be ongoing for years to come. On October 15 another mass demonstration is coming to Toronto as part of the Occupy Everywhere movement. Neither the people of Toronto, nor I’m sure, its police force want to see a repeat of the G20 weekend.
“We, the undersigned, expect that officers will be professional, will attempt to communicate with demonstrators at all times, will make any requests or demands clear and will give citizens including demonstrators, passers by, observers and the media every opportunity to comply with those requests before taking any action.”
Are the inmates are running the asylum?
The online lecture continues:
“If there is violence it should not, under any circumstances, be instigated by the police and in the event it is necessary the minimum possible force should be used. Under no circumstances should police resort to the use of tear gas, pepper spray, tasers, rubber bullets, sound cannons or any other device, substance or method that may harm individuals other than the intended target. Individuals should neither be arrested nor detained unless there is an intent on the part of the police to charge them with a crime. Individuals should not be kettled or impeded in any way unless there is a belief on the part of police that they were involved in a crime or are about to commit a crime.“
That is some list of demands from an anonymous group. Should the police just take the week off?
Not likely. They are onto this.
“We’re not going to go into any details about the event, other than to say a plan is being put together that’s aimed at protecting public safety and facilitating a peaceful protest,” said a TPS spokesman.
It’s true there is cynicism toward the TPS post G20. They don’t enjoy criticism but it’s a fact there was less than the truth presented about the five-metre fence rule pre-summit, there was inaccurate assertions that certain detainees were armed or that video evidence was doctored or that officers involved in alleged assaults didn’t know each other when they were actually roommates, or that evidence laid out on a media table was not remotely involved in the riot.
It is also true disabled people were detained for no reason, women were stripped searched but not charged, horses charged into crowds, people were shot with rubber bullets, were disgracefully kettled and detained in a makeshift jail but not charged. It’s true the real culprits burned police cars, smashed and controlled Toronto while at thousands of police stood down.
Do you trust Toronto Police to handle the latest protest?
I do.
Yes, they had a very bad weekend in 2010 and leadership has been lacking in atoning for it. But they are still the good guys (and gals). We criticize them sometimes, praise them others, the whole time knowing their situation is often untenable and their reactions forced to be made on the fly before a mass and new media free to scrutinize.
Chief Bill Blair did not handle the G20 well or the fallout either. But he has done other things very well -- including presiding over a decreasing murder rate of 20% over last year and a shooting rate that is down 23%. We blame the chief for errors so it’s only fair to offer he and his men and women credit where it’s due. TPS does a lot more right than they ever do wrong.
As for people who have already vandalized property with graffiti promoting this planned occupation, here’s how it should go down. If you act appropriately and keep out the Black Bloc infiltrators, Toronto Police will be professional. And by acting professional, does not mean they are not allowed to arrest. They don’t answer to you. They have a mandate to police the city and they will do it. If the protesters block Bay Street or any roadway they can count on being arrested.
There’s no question there’s some validity to this protest movement during a time where it seems that a generation of future middle class has been eliminated while the people of China, Mexico and India enjoy our jobs. The frustration is legitimate and cannot be ignored but it should manifest itself peacefully in the parks and public areas and without nonsense. If not, Toronto Police is not bound by any conditions set by anybody.
Torontonians sometimes criticize our cops but, make no mistake, they are still our cops.

TORONTO - It's a mass protest movement without formal leadership that began on Wall Street, and on Saturday it will coalesce for the first time in Canada.
Those involved with Occupy Bay Street and similar demonstrations planned for other Canadian centres are trying to draw attention to a growing divide between haves and have-nots.
"The theory by governments the world over is that if we reward the one per cent, it will trickle down to the other 99, but that's not happening," said Amy MacPherson, a social and poverty activist.
"The present systems we have are not working."
Almost a month ago, Occupy Wall Street activists carrying a message of anger and frustration over the economic meltdown descended on lower Manhattan and decided to stay there.
The protest unleashed a global outcry against the simple notion that the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer — with the blessing of governments that mollycoddle the financial elites.
"The majority of people are no longer feeling that they have meaningful representation," said Kevin Konnyu, 33, a Toronto photographer involved with the Occupy Bay Street planning.
"The ballot box is no longer, perhaps never was, working in our best interests."
Greased by social media, similar demonstrations cropped up in other American cities and have begun spreading — from Canada to Hong Kong to South Africa.
Antarctica is the only continent that isn't involved, said MacPherson, 36, of Wasaga Beach, Ont.
On Saturday, protesters are expected in various Canadian cities such as Montreal, Vancouver and Edmonton, with Occupy Bay Street in Toronto likely to be the largest gathering.
The activists do not have a single "ask" of government. Instead they hope to awaken politicians and the public at large to a spectrum of social issues such as job losses and lack of affordable housing.
Mostly, there is anger over government bailouts they say lined the pockets of corporate big wigs but did little to help those lower down the economic food chain.
As Canada's financial hub, Bay Street is an obvious symbolic target, although the exact location could change.
Insiders fret police could barricade off a site if announced ahead of time. There have also been disagreements about alternate locations.
Decisions on Occupy Bay street are being taken at "general assemblies" — meetings at which activists hash out issues and try to reach a consensus.
"It's a wake-up that we can actually organize, engage civilly in discussion, work out what the problems are, and come to mutually agreeable decisions on what we can do," Konnyu said.
Social media sites have been abuzz with a raucous infusion of ideas and arguments.
One discussion has been whether organized labour should take part.
For now, despite sympathy with the cause, the labour movement will not have a formal role out of fears of dominating the message.
"Of course we support it. We understand it. We've been fighting the same thing for a long time: greed," Canadian Labour Congress president Ken Georgetti. "It's rapacious."
Sid Ryan, president of the Ontario Federation of Labour, said his organization has met some of the activists and will offer small-scale logistical help.
"These guys here are asking us to come late to the party," Ryan said.
"We need to step back and let them organize their events the way they want to organize it and get it off the ground."
While those involved say momentum is building, no one is predicting how many people might show up Saturday.
There is, however, a strong expectation that the "occupation" will continue beyond the weekend as it has on Wall Street.

Occupy Toronto leaderless, unfocused but hopeful

It’s partly an anti-business protest, though the chief spokesperson is a college business student.
Their symbolic target is Bay Street, though they plan to hold their events in a park so it doesn’t tie up traffic.
They’re not sure yet what they stand for. But they know they want something better than this. And they’re going to meet Friday to figure out what it is.
This is Occupy Toronto, a movement inspired by Occupy Wall Street, a self-described leaderless resistance movement for people of all gender, race and political persuasion.
Police have arrested more than 700 Wall Street protestors since that occupation began Sept. 17, mainly as they marched toward the Brooklyn Bridge Oct. 1.
The Toronto group is one of dozens that have sprung up around the globe since then.
They plan to launch their own version on Saturday Oct. 15, which they call a globally coordinated day of a protest that’s expected to continue into December.
The Toronto organizers acknowledge Canada doesn’t have the same problems that sparked the ongoing protests south of the border in lower Manhattan’s Zuccotti Park.
“In America, you have the foreclosure crisis, the bank bailouts, massive amounts of unemployment and the Wisconsin union destruction,” said Bryan Batty, a 25-year-old college business student and spokesperson for Occupy Toronto
But Canadians have lots to be mad about, including the government’s growing debt load, high youth unemployment, and environmental destruction by big forestry and oil companies, he said.
If the movement seems unfocused that’s because organizers says it’s going to be up to “the people” to decide what counts.
At general assemblies, beginning this Friday in a downtown Toronto park and continuing throughout the “occupation,” participants will meet and talk and share their concerns and educate each other.
The theme, if there is one, appears to be corporate greed.
As one Occupy Toronto supporter put it in an email, the Canadian government is in debt, bankers have been allowed to run amok, and the average Canadian is paying the price.
“We the people are tired of living with no hope,” Gregory Kane wrote. “Perhaps the entire protest, the entire “occupy” movement is simply about gaining and spreading knowledge and joy. What else do we have to live for?”
The fact the movement lacks a leader or specific goal is part of its appeal, another supporter said.
“It's everyone’s movement. Everyone has a chance to be heard,” Sarah Jensen, a 28-year-old college student in Barrie, wrote in an email. “I’m fighting to end poverty. I’m fighting for good jobs. I’m fighting for equality. I’m fighting for people to care about each other and their country. I’m fighting for the environment. I’m fighting non-violently for a better tomorrow.”
The Wall Street protests were inspired by Canadian anti-consumer magazine Adbusters.
Editor in chief and co-founder Kalle Lasn said he’s been calling for this kind of protest movement for 20 years.
It’s finally happening because people are angry with the financial fraudsters on Wall Street who created America’s economic mess and largely went unpunished, he said in a telephone interview from Vancouver.
And the grassroots movement in Egypt last spring showed people how they could use Facebook and Twitter to get huge numbers of people out into the street “to vent their rage,” Lasn said.

Occupy Toronto activists choose not to talk to police for now

The Occupy Toronto movement is temporarily closing lines of communication with city police, one day after a member of the group opened them.
Beginning next week, activists in Toronto say they plan to occupy a public space near the city’s financial district, with the broad aim of calling attention to the gap between the world’s wealthiest and the rest of the population. They are modelling their movement after Occupy Wall Street in New York, where demonstrators who took over a downtown park have sparked a growing global movement.
Similar gatherings have already cropped up in Boston, Los Angeles, and other U.S. cities, and organizers in dozens of other countries say they will begin their own protests on Oct. 15.
Tom Zaugg, who ran for the People’s Political Party of Ontario this fall and is among the loose group of people working to bring the Occupy movement to Toronto, said he spoke with police at Toronto’s 52 Division about the protest movement.
He told nearly 300 people who gathered in Toronto’s Berczy Park for the Toronto movement’s first public planning meeting that he thought working with police would help keep protesters safe.
Inspector Howie Page, who is handling queries about the Occupy Toronto movement for 52 Division, was not immediately available for comment.
Sensitivities about working with police run high in the city’s activist community, in large part because of the confrontational tactics used by police during the G20 protest last summer.
The topic of co-operation with police came up multiple times in the three-hour meeting. Some argued that letting police know what they were doing in advance might help protect them from tear gas or arrest, while others took a more cynical view. “They’re going to beat us anyway,” one man shouted.
Ultimately, the group agreed to halt talks with police until activists are more organized and can make the decision as a group.
The Occupy Toronto group is operating on consensus, a decision-making tool that aims to ensure everyone agrees with a proposal before moving ahead on it.

Hello world, hello protestors. This is a message from Anonymous. This is a message to the 99 percent. This is a message to the American Autumn.

It is clear that from the beginning of this movement we have been censored. Despite the fact that, massive demonstrations, were planning to occupy Wall Street, we were ignored in the media. Despite the fact that the protestors were flocking from every corner of the nation to join the protest they remained silent.

However, the era of the internet is upon us. The power to circumvent the mass media has become trivial. You are paper tigers, and we are a scorching wildfire. The elites have been forced to recognize the movement, they have been forced to stand against us. And so began the campaign to mock us. We are dirty, homeless, unAmerican, stupid, voiceless, disorganized, violent. We are a mob, we are young, foolish, liberal, unemployed. We are leeches, parasites, anarchists, brainwashed. We are communists, dangerous, untrustworthy, rabble rousers, terrorists.

However, despite the frantic and desperate moves by the elites to slander this movement, despite their vain efforts to curtail and skew our image, we have shattered through their lies. The truth was spread, the lies were snuffed out. We will not be set aside by mere insults and disgusting propaganda. We are the people, and this is what democracy looks like. The elites now are being pushed up against the walls. They are resorting to their trump cards, and the strong arms have arrived. The camps of Boston have been raided. The camps of San Francisco have been dispersed. The protests in New York have been violently curtailed and beaten. The protests in Seattle are on the verge of being raided by riot police.

This is the final step in our strategy. A famous man once said that at first they will ignore you. Then they will mock you. Thirdly they will fight you. And then you win. There is nothing you can do. There are no more moves to make, this is checkmate. The game is over Wall Street. You fell into our trap, you repeated history. You planted the seeds for civil dissent, and now you will watch as what you reap is sowed, you will watch as the entire country blossoms and you are consumed. All the dominoes are falling, and you will watch as one by one we prevail. The protestors have won. Stop your vain efforts, the wildfires are all around you. Stop preparing for revolution. It's upon you.
