Ships burn fuel continuosly, even when at the pier. They need to generate substantial amounts of electricity for ships systems including AC, lighting, control systems, a whole array of high-volume pumps, navigation etc..
    They burn more when underway.

It's pretty well known that Scientology routinely pads their photos and seats at events, bussing people and staff in, etc. I'd be more surprised if the Freewinds crew wasn't in the photo.

It's more likely to be staged than shooped. Scientology seems to prefer staging nowadays, perhaps because they got pwned on their shoopage very publicly.

Surely most people going off on a cruise like that would have someone with them to wave goodbye? It would be simple to ask them all on board for a photo op.

Unless a ship is only in port for a very short while, electricity will be provided via the mains.

Most systems onboard a ship are either shutdown outright or put into low power states - navigation, radar, various control systems. There simply isn't the need to have a ship running with all of it's systems going at full bore unless it's needed, and if it is needed, you probably don't want to be onboard that ship.

Taking power from shore is a very recent development known as cold ironing. It has only just begun being deployed in in large port cities like Los Angeles and San Francisco and even then only for a few vessels.
Teeny islands like St. Kitts don't have this capability nor are they likely to use it since the main reason is to reduce pollution produced by ships in port that must run their engines to provide power to the ship.

FROM THE WIKIPEDIA ARTICLE ON THE FREEWINDS:

In 1984, the Church of Scientology's parent body, the Church of Scientology International (CSI), decided to obtain a ship on which to deliver high-level Scientology courses. According to a statement by the Church, "CSI believed that an ocean-going vessel would be the most appropriate facility for ministering New OT VIII because this advanced level of religious service requires a completely safe, aesthetic and distraction-free environment and because L. Ron Hubbard, the religion's founder, had researched and ministered the first OT levels aboard a ship in the late 1960s. A ship therefore would have particular religious significance to Scientologists."

Also, being on an ocean-going vessel would help to keep LRH out of the reach of the law. He was running from the authorities in several countries.

And exactly HOW did LRN "research the first OT levels aboard a ship in the late 1960s"?
You just don't look up DC space planes and Xenu in a library book.

Last I checked a psychopath can drink lots of rum and pop pinks and greys just about anywhere, even under a bridge. A ship at sea is not needed.

Also, St. Kitts threw a big dock party to celebrate the Failwinds' 20th year of docking at St. Kitt.

So some of those in the picture could be local dignitaries and guests. Then again, look at the size of the ship. That's a dwarf-sized pool there. That boat isn't that big.

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

Is this the event to which 'hundreds' of people flew in to St Kitts from the US and the UK? I must try to find the source for that. So much to read, so little time.

    http://www.sknvibes.com/Business/NewsDetails.cfm/10177

“None of this could have happened without the airlift coming in. The daily flights from Miami and other destinations. They all go hand in hand,” he explained. “To be able to move 300 hundred [sic] people all within a day or two to get on the ship requires the necessary airlift.”

“The Freewinds is celebrating its anniversary cruise and we are celebrating with them, and at the same time using it as an opportunity to celebrate the fact that tourism is working, cruise shipping is working and we are confident that it will continue to work with this Government in charge,”

Many local businesses particularly smaller enterprises such as taxi operators and entertainers have benefited by providing services for the homeport of the Freewinds cruise ship in St. Kitts.

Also we learn that Captain Alpers stressed that he was pleased that St. Kitts has been able to keep its unique charm and warmth, which greatly compliments the growth of the tourism sector. He noted that VIPs from around the world, including top international artistes, will be part of the free celebration which takes place tomorrow.

“We want to invite everyone down to Port Zante on Saturday afternoon at 3:00 pm,” he said, explaining that family-oriented activities including cultural performances, bouncing castles and domino competitions will take place, along with a performance from the popular Small Axe Band. “That’s what makes St. Kitts great and we want to feature that … and [have] the people come down and enjoy the send off.”

The captain said the experience will conclude with a traditional ship departure where persons assemble on the pier and bid the passengers “bon voyage” amid music, falling confetti and the blast of the ship’s horn.

This seems to explain the largish number of people if not their terribly pale faces. Or of course the photograph could have nothing to do with the event.

Having only dealt with Naval ships I assumed this was fairly common in anything approaching modern sea going vessels. Yours, the one below and wikipedia all point to it being all but unheard of outside of the military.

    I stand corrected.

But it now makes me wonder what the cost of just having the failwinds sitting in port idling (even if only on smaller aux generators).

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

The Freewinds is actually quite a small ship. Someone standing at the very very very tail end of the boat wouldn't be able to get that many people in the photo without some sort of wide angle lens. My understanding is that wide-angle lenses do present some sorts of distortion.

Freewinds Celebrate 20 Years with St. Kitts

Port Captain Ludwig Alpers told SKNIS that St. Kitts continues to grow positively

    Photos 2 of 2

Basseterre, St. Kitts, June 19, 2009 (SKNIS): Persons from around the world continue to converge on St. Kitts, to celebrate with the cruise ship Freewinds as it marks its 20th Anniversary visit to the Federation.

The ship has been home porting at Port Zante in Basseterre over the past few days, preparing to kick off its 21st year of Caribbean cruises. Port Captain Ludwig Alpers told SKNIS why St. Kitts was chosen as a venue for this event.

“We have very good relations here,” he stated, with a smile on his face. “I’ve known the Minister [of State] for Tourism for 20 years. Our agent Delisle Walwyn is a very successful agent and they can handle our needs.”

Alpers referred to the schedule of airlift from the United States and United Kingdom and described them as positives. “It’s an up and coming cruise destination. You’re growing, growing each year, to the point that I can’t even get in here anymore,” he stated, reflecting on the first visit of the Freewinds two decades ago. “It’s kind of odd to think that it is summer time and we are going to have the Carnival [cruise ship] Destiny next to us. That’s very positive for St. Kitts.”

Captain Alpers stressed that he was pleased that St.

Minister of State for Tourism, Honourable Richard Skerritt said Government has been working very hard to enhance the infrastructure to ensure the continued growth of the tourism sector, and the Federation as a whole. A major part of this strategy includes increasing airlift into the country.

“None of this could have happened without the airlift coming in. The daily flights from Miami and other destinations. They all go hand in hand,” he explained. “To be able to move 300 hundred people all within a day or two to get on the ship requires the necessary airlift.”

“The Freewinds is celebrating its anniversary cruise and we are celebrating with them, and at the same time using it as an opportunity to celebrate the fact that tourism is working, cruise shipping is working and we are confident that it will continue to work with this Government in charge,”

Picture reminds me of The Beatles Sargent Pepper's Album cover for some reason, might be cardboard cut outs. :-D

TBH - likely only 64 disembarked and only those were counted so could be more on boat doing courses.

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

Of the navy ships I've seen (fairly small ones, used for research rather than fighting) even they seem to keep one engine running even in port, unless they are laid up for weeks/months at a stretch.

Shore power was an added bonus- when they could get it.
But unless there was maintenance needed in the engine room,
you didn't shut down everything on routine port stops.

(Though, the fuel consumption in port was pretty low afaik)

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

Freewinds has four genny's for electrical power, not counting one extra emergency generator.
Main generator 1 (diesel engine) Port Inside manufactured by Wartsila-Vasa Model 6-R-22 865 KWatts
Main generator 2 (diesel engine) Port Outside manufactured by Wartsila-Vasa Model 6-R-22 865 KWatts
Main generator 3 (diesel engine) Starboard Inside manufacturer unknown 814 KWatts
Main generator 4 (diesel engine) Starboard Outside manufacturer unknown 814 KWatts

Total power generation capacity is 3358 Kilowatts.
At 75% load that works out to about 207 gallons or 0.8 tons of diesel per hour. That's 19.2 tons per day.
Current price for one ton IFO380 marine bunker fuel is $423.00 in Panama.
At sea Freewinds burns about $8121.60 per day for electrical power generation.
    In port, $6497.28 per day.

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

They probably don't have to run 3 of 4 generators in port, more like one. Right?

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

If we start to quote these numbers anywhere (even if it only an estimate) please take into account fuel tax. So if we are working with California prices then these could be inflated by $00.689 per gallon.

Not sure how up to date the prices are. Price of doing business in St. Kitts appears to be substantially lower. This is assuming that they pay taxes there at all.

True cost is going to be lower.

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

Those auxillary diesels for power generation aren't the only factor when the Freewinds is under way. There are also the two main engines, a pair of Sulzer 2SA-8 diesels, to factor in. These aren't truck engines, they are huge monsters.

What I haven't been able to track down is whether they are used as generators to drive electric motors on the screw shafts, or if they are used to directly drive the shafts.

If used as generators, they have a combined power output of 10,444KW. If direct drive, they put out 14,000BHP. Either way, they will suck up a lot more diesel when under way than those auxillary power generators will.

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

I don't know if that fuel tax would apply, I think the boat is controled by a Panama company. Their fuel prices, taxes if any etc. might be different. JB said the boat is a dump, and it doesn't enter US waters so it is never subject to US inspections etc. AFIAK.

You would rather believe they had cardboard cutouts and people who paid $50,000 were standing next to cutouts for the purpose of making the picture look better??

You really can't believe there are 200 rich sucker culties who would fly down and go on the failwinds?? Do you think all the Scientology Completion lists under Freewinds magazine are ALL LIES?

Give this shit up, just because they were caught shooping some events in a magazine once, why do some many people have to waste hours on this topic. You are free to waste your e-sleuthing time on this, but how bout you keep your fail mouth shut until you actually find something "suspicious"?

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

    But this time he's right.

Except anonymous1312 was kidding about cardboard cutouts. I thought the smiley gave it away, but I guess sometime it's hard to detect sarcasm and humor through the internet without tone of voice.

    Seriously though:
Crew in civvies mixed with passengers, as well as maybe shore guests, is much more likely than super-advanced photoshopping.

What many of you might not realize though, is that group photos are commonly retouched or photoshopped to merge several photos of the same group. In a group of so many people, there is bound to be some of them who blinks just as the photo is taken. That is why you take several photos and then merge them together to remove "sleepy-eyes". So if this photo is shooped, it's probably just the standard shooping that photographers do, which isn't deceptive.

What our Mod (may he live for ever) is not addressing is the discrepancy between the published and neutral figure of 64 and the 200 beaming faces in the official Scam publication.

I think any shore guests would be much more sunburned. The balance (130) of these white faces are more likely to be staff IMO. Does anyone know how many staff live on Failwinds? Staff would perhaps not go ashore.

Re: Only 64 passengers aboard the Freewinds in June

If they are shore guests, they can be from the other cruise ships, or tourists who came in another way, and who are aboard for a visit to the ship.

Don't forget that some of the Scientology tourists might have chosen to stay on board as well.
