I KNOW there was somewhere that Hubbard said very clearly that anyone who took phych meds was a "degraded being" per those Ethics conditions. I'm pretty sure it was Science of Survival, but I don't have (and never plan to) the book in front of me to find the page #, etc. Can someone who has that book check?

i think it takes linking two references together. if "suppressive person" is defined as a degraded being, then we can accurately extrapolate from this reference:

also in the PTS related tech stuff, chronic illness = PTS, and extreme PTS = SP.

atleast thats the best i could come up since "degraded being" question first came on up this thread yesterday.

I'd go with this if it was me, only because if anyone checks out the reference links then it's a more useful article than the alternative headfuck of Hubbard drivel.

I need dox on what a degraded being is. Google and LiveSearch gave me nothing that the press would understand.

me too... i was looking at all the different places the "degraded being" phrase is being thrown out in this context, and ebner's seems to be the oldest - he connected the dots first. and he's got relevant body of journalistic works on the subject of scientology for it to hold weight imo.

Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

Fixed all spelling errors, and added the source to degraded beings.

Are we ready? Also, can someone format this in proper press-release form?
  8. Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

I changed the first sentence, because reference [1] didn't exactly support the epilepsy/degraded being link (it was referring to Scientology's view of autism). Also I think it sounds more direct this way.

(Remove spaces from links, I disabled parsing of links but in the preview the spaces are still inserted, breaking the links)

EDIT: see post below for unbroken URLs

    FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Jett Travolta deemed a "degraded being" in Scientology doctrine [1]

LOS ANGELES, CA (date) - Despite claims that have been made to the contrary, Scientology opposes the use of any psychiatric medications, including the Depakote that Jett used to control his seizures.

Anonymous activists extend their condolences to Scientologist John Travolta after the untimely death of his son, Jett. It is the sincerest hope of Anonymous that John Travolta did everything he could for the well-being of his son.

In doing so, however, he would be acting against the Dianetics practices of the Church of Scientology [2], which states that any mind-altering drugs "maim and destroy people [3]," and is thus strictly forbidden for use by any Scientologist. Depakote in particular is described as a harmful drug by the "Citizens Commission on Human Rights," a Scientology front group that opposes Psychiatry. [4]

The Travoltas have stated that they put Jett through the "Purification Rundown", a controversial Scientology program that involves administering dangerous doses of Niacin, which has been found to cause liver damage. [5] The Purification Rundown is the same program that is used in Narconon and Second Chance, other Scientology front groups. Recently a Second Chance center in Albuquerque, NM was shut down after it was found to have violated city ordinances. [6]

John Travolta's brother Joey said in an interview with The London Mirror "it was so obvious Jett was autistic just from spending five minutes with him, but the cruel fact of their religion meant his parents simply did not accept it.” [7] Additionally, video of Jett taken by French photographers in 2007 showed Jett exhibiting autistic symptoms. [8]

Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard alleged in a 1972 lecture that epilepsy can be cured through a Scientology ritual called auditing, and that they will need to be taken off of any epileptic drugs before going through the process. Hubbard referred to epilepsy related terms as "gobbledygook". [9]

hold on a second, fact checking...

need to edit the thing about Joey Travolta's comments, it was not him speaking directly to the Mirror newspaper, it was a friend of Joey's describing what he said.

edit: okay see edited version below, is it okay?

Second Chance NM violated their LEASE not local ordinances (at least so far as I know that's not yet been officially alleged).

I don't think a lease violation has much of anything to do with Scientology's crazydangerous medicine mentality.

However, according to the link it had a lot to do with the fact the Co$ did not do what they claimed they would do. The man quoted below is the mayor and the property belonged to the city government.

Sounds to me like it did have to do with violating city ordinances.

Jett Travolta deemed a "degraded being" in Scientology doctrine [1]

LOS ANGELES, CA (date) - Despite claims that have been made to the contrary, Scientology opposes the use of any psychiatric medications, including the Depakote that Jett used to control his seizures.

Anonymous activists extend their condolences to Scientologists John Travolta and Kelly Preston after the untimely death of their son, Jett. It is the sincerest hope of Anonymous that they did everything they could for the well-being of their son.

In doing so, however, they would be acting against the Dianetics practices of the Church of Scientology [2], which states that any mind-altering drugs "maim and destroy people [3]," and are thus strictly forbidden for use by any Scientologist. Depakote in particular is described as a harmful drug by the "Citizens Commission on Human Rights," a Scientology front group that opposes Psychiatry. [4]

Epilepsy is characterized by recurrent unprovoked seizures, such as those reportedly experienced by Jett Travolta. Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard alleged in a 1972 lecture that epilepsy can be cured through a Scientology ritual called auditing, and that they will need to stop taking any epileptic drugs before going through the process. Hubbard referred to epilepsy related terms as "gobbledygook". [5]

John Travolta and his brother Joey Travolta reportedly clashed over Jett's diagnosis. According to UK newspaper, The Mirror, Joey believed "it was so obvious Jett was autistic just from spending five minutes with him, but the cruel fact of their religion meant his parents simply did not accept it." [6] People magazine reported that Travolta family friend and actress Anne Archer said "I observed that he was significantly mentally handicapped. ... John always communicated to him as if Jett could completely understand him. ... It was a kind of sweet exchange, where he was just happy with anything that Jett offered. Anything." [7] Additionally, video of Jett taken in France in 2007 showed Jett exhibiting autistic symptoms. [8] Autism is not accepted within Scientology, which classes people with neuropsychiatric disorders as "degraded beings". [1]

The Travoltas have stated that they put Jett through the "Purification Rundown", a controversial Scientology program that involves administering dangerous doses of niacin, which has been found to cause liver damage. [9] The Purification Rundown is the same program that is used in Narconon and Second Chance, other Scientology front groups. Recently a Second Chance center in Albuquerque, NM was shut down because it was housing inmates charged with violent crimes, in violation of its lease. [10]

The circumstances of Jett Travolta's tragic death should only be discussed with the utmost respect for the family and for the facts, unlike the manner in which the CCHR and celebrity Scientologists have treated the grief-stricken in the past. [11][12]

    See post above
changed paragraph order so it addresses the main points first, added missing ref to list, changed second chance thing to lease violation.

So is this ready to send out? Should it be sent out?
My initial reaction was against the whole idea of a press release, but now I think it might be okay... If anything it could provoke more discussion, and it needs to be done soon while the press attention is on
  23. TheBitch Member

Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

Send it. Being paralyzed and making no moves at all is as ill advised as acting quickly without regard for process. $cientology is plenty skilled at making their own mistakes without us, but it's absolutely assured that they over react in response to us... each and every time. They're already painting us as "ghoulish" from jump, and that's not sustaining legs. We came out with an informative PSA outlining the issues WITHOUT drawing conclusions, and in fact offering condolences and advising others not to jump to "ugly conclusions without facts."

We've done our due diligence. What's written is factual and draws no conclusions. Empathetic offering of condolences is again appropriately in place. Time to further the narrative of "this is a meaningful part of the backstory, even if the press already has hold of it, and to take a public stand instead of having them simply tell the press what it is we're DOING TO THEM SO UNFAIRLY yadda yadda..

tl/dr - go - Gregg, if you're around I suggest strongly you consider sending this out through the usual channels. It's time we make at least one active move on this chess board, if only to stir up some lulz in the inevitable response by the cult.

Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

Keep providing the media with the ammunition they need to continue the good work they are already doing. Us barging our way in with a release like this accomplishes nothing that isn't already being achieved.

A press release with information we are already passing to the media, and some media already combing these threads for that info, simply smacks of total aids and fail to me.

And you know the best bit about the current situation? Since it isn't us making these claims in the media the cult doesn't have a bogeyman to distract away from the fuckery they are experiencing.

That good enough for? I know you get a hard at the thought of a press release but this one won't do us any good at all.
  27. Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

I see your point, but keep in mind that a lot of media outlets have only heard Scientology's side of the story. Many are blindly accepting Scilon PR even where it can be clearly refuted. For example, Anderson Cooper 360: Blog Archive - Scientologist speaks out on Travolta death - Blogs from CNN.com
  28. themadhair Member

Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

Doesn't that sort of reinforce what I'm suggesting? Give those media outlets the info they need - but through harpoons and not a press release.
  29. Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

Continued harpooning is needed, absolutely. But mainstream media tends to ignore emails and comments, a press release from a (non)organization is more likely to get the attention of a journalist.

Re: It cannot be ignored, we need a press release, now.

I still think it's a bad idea but I won't go against the hivemind (although I'm not sure if the hivemind is necessarily in favour of this).

If you do go ahead maybe including Tommy Davis's recent footbullet about the purif being a spiritual process might be worth adding.

I'd wait until the burial is done before doing press releases as well, but sending tips and facts to journalists, and writing op-eds should continue now that the story has novelty.

I have some suggestions for change. The most important is bolded:

Thanks for that. A word on caution that links going to Scientology sites might be altered by Scientology after the release goes out, so perhaps provide the archive.org versions of those URLs?

    May I also propose this:

Do not put a reference in the title! References are used in the body of the press release, but look tacky in the title. I made changes to make the reference work here.

Everthing else seems fine. I like this version:
