An Edmond man accused of sexually assaulting several orphans in Africa took the stand in federal court Wednesday.

During the trial Matthew Durham testified that he had been to the Kenyan orphanage four times between the summer of 2012 and the summer of 2014. On Durham's last trip to the orphanage he was confronted by workers saying six children had come forward accusing him of rape and molestation.

Durham says he initially denied the allegations, referring to himself in the third person saying "Matthew would never do this". After talking with the group, he admitted to "struggling with homosexuality and sexual thoughts about children".

They had suggested he was taken over by a demon or evil spirit. Durham testified he was taken to a home outside of the orphanage for four days and during that time he could not separate dreams from reality.

The defense then showed a 12-minute video from Durham's time in Kenya in which he confesses in detail to raping two young girls. Several of the 100 plus people in the courtroom left due to its graphic nature. He says he did so because he was scared he would have been turned over to Kenyan Police if he didn't.

During cross-examination Wednesday, the defense again showed several clippings of Durham's handwritten confessions. In the confessions Durham allegedly writes that he molested several of the children on "many occasions".

Durham again said that he did this because he was scared he wouldn't be able to leave the country because they had his passport. Durham says he didn't think about going to the U.S. Embassy for fear they would believe the orphanage. Durham was asked several times by both the prosecution and the defense if he committed the crimes, in which he responded, "I know I didn't molest anybody"
Closing arguments are expected in the trial Wednesday, then, it goes to the jury. If convicted, Durham faces life in prison.
