"With this reported Oct. 12 release date, you can now begin speculating on which fall film festival will debut "The Master." Possibilities include Toronto, Telluride or New York. Sorry, Cannes!"

    Dear COS,
please be so kind as to release yet another foot bullet (among your many thousands of foot bullets) by making a big stink about this movie and try to squash it again or better yet, please protest it! Also please release an official church statement bawing your concerns when it premiers, so it will become a movie that everyone will want to see.
    thank you, that is all

You guys realise that although it shares similarities with the Hubbard story and was probably inspired by it, it will not be a historical movie about the birth of scientology right?

It'll be loosely based on it at best and vaguely inspired at worst. Nothing to get your panties wet about.

As usual, ice-brain, you miss the point.

It's all about how the CULT will react.

Now go put your tuque back on.

Here's a duplicate of my post on page 30 of the Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes Are Divorcing thread, at

Tom Cruise, other Scientology members dislike portrayal of a cult leader in new film 'The Master' - NY Daily News

Star is unhappy with director Paul Thomas Anderson's movie about a sect founder who's 'making it up as he goes along,' source says

A source familiar with Paul Thomas Anderson ’s film about the founder of a Scientology-like religious movement tells us officials of the controversial church group “hit the roof” when they learned — presumably through Cruise — that the movie contains a scene which suggests the belief system was little more than a product of the leader’s fertile imagination.

In May, Anderson, who is friends with Cruise and directed him in “Magnolia,” the 1999 film that earned Cruise a Best Supporting Actor Oscar nomination — reportedly screened his film for the “Rock of Ages” star.

“The Master” is said to be loosely based on the life of Scientology founder L. Ron Hubbard, and stars Philip Seymour Hoffman as Lancaster Dodd, the founder of a 1950s religious movement called The Cause.

Wow, Marc Headley really knocks this one out of the park! The Daily Beast obtained a copy of The Master script and got it to Marc, who shows, point by point, how this film, opening in October, is about nothing but the early history of Scientology!

Case Closed: Paul Thomas Anderson's Script for The Master is Nothing But Scientology

Headley goes down 22 major comparison points between the script and actual Scientology history. You should go to the Daily Beast to read that comparison, but we'll pull out just a few to show you how close the comparison is.

The divorce really will help with the box office numbers.

Scientology-Like Group Called “Cult” in Trailer for Oscar-Buzzed Fall Movie | Showbiz411

The trailer for Paul Thomas Anderson’s “The Master” is out–you can see it in our video play at the bottom of the home page. It’s loosely based on the storyof how L. Ron Hubbard started Scientology. And the world “cult” is used in the trailer to describe the group that Lancaster Dodd, the Hubbard character, starts. The movie seems to be about a drifter played by Joaquin Phoenix who inspires Dodd but then turns on him. It appears that he has to be eliminated in order for Dodd’s work to go on. Anderson showed a rough cut of the film to Tom Cruise last spring as a courtesy–Cruise appeared in Anderson’s “Magnolia” years ago. Cruise, I was told, wasn’t thrilled with the film. Apparently Anderson has simply persevered. Given the revelations this summer about Cruise and Scientology, “The Master” is set to start a firestorm this fall.

Read more about Scientology, too, by Tony Ortega, who does a great job in the Village Voice:

  31. Just looking at this trailer, it appears to me that PTA is putting a lot of blame on the Mary Sue character.

To think... not so long ago, a film like this would have been suppressed.

What a difference the net can make in 4+ years times.

    The fear is evaporating.

  33. I'm telling everyone I know about $camology and that seeing Tom Thumb as Jack Reacharound is supporting child labor/child abuse. Now I can suggest this one as def worth a watch. Hope this a HYUUGE hit and the Tom Thumb's crock tanks ~( already heard stories of people sniggering at the fight scenes in it).

Marc does a SUPER job with this comparison. He actually missed the bull's-eye slightly on one item though, IMO:

But the tightest semantic comparison here (AFAIK, anyway!) is actually to this:

Granted, the numbers are a little further apart, but the wording makes up for it.

Actually, come to think of it... where does that 75 trillion come from?

The dialog is almost pure L.Ron. I recognize the bar story, but "the Master" is not a cop.
