Yes, the same thing happened/is happening in the Congo and Sierra leone. For some reason they think eating the organs of their enemies (yes even in this day and age!) gives them magical powers and good luck. This is idiotic as those organs weren't so lucky for the victims.

There is no running water in these locations. Why? The countries in question have had ongoing wars for the past ... ohhhhh THIRTY F'ing years.
If you constantly go to war and never work on your country's infrastructure bad things are bound to happen!

I feel bad for those innocent people caught up in this and their inability to seek help. At the same time its near impossible for 1st world countries to help when they keep getting killed when they show up. Its not good PR!!!!

That, and a higher population density. View any world map of population density, and you can see why Europe has the best sewer systems, with Asians in second place. It's not because Europeans and Asians are particularly smart, it's out of necessity.

Africa is thinly populated, due to much of it being useless for agriculture. One of the reasons good roads and power lines aren't common, there's simply not enough people to make it worthwhile. Come plagues like Ebola and Aids, they pay the price.

More importantly then any of the above is the lack of importance they put on education. In most areas in western Africa (where the ebola is a plague currently) they don't hold any importance on education. What is plain common sense to us is impossible for them due to this lack of education. Western Africa is so screwed up I personally don't think it can be fixed.

They do have a very dense population in the cities. That is one of the problems with the disease spreading.

They will continue to kill their children and their children's children until they take education serious. Hell there are men in SL who are raping young girls (under the age of 11) as they were told raping a virgin cures aides. How do you reason with people like that?! The ignorance is mind boggling... and they CHOOSE to be ignorant as there are so many people that have gone there to try and help.

Just because Western coast is completely screwed does not give anyone the right to point the finger and blame 1st world countries. Its Liberia's shame and the rest of west Africa.The doctors are trying to get through to them "You can't shit where you drink!" I would think that would be common sense but apparently not...

Here is an article about this guy in the US with Ebola. He was not American but Liberian. Of importance look at the photos of where he was living before he flew here. That is what WHO and the CDC are trying to combat. I have a tough time understanding why residents of West Africa aren't screened better before coming here. Its a matter of health and safety. He had no business on that plane. He was carrying around sick people and living with sick people before he got on the damn plane!! Now he has put us all at risk However if you look at the photos you will see the conditions that are breeding this disease.

I don't mean to sound harsh as I do care about these people. Its just a harshness due to frustration. They yell and scream for help and when we send it they kill the help!

This is starting to get REALLY off topic but for those who are concerned about the outbreak there are 2 decent and recent documentaries about it. Not belittle the risks of this disease but both show what health care workers are having to deal with there. The documentaries made me feel better about it not spreading where I live. We might get small pockets here and there but most people have access to cleaning supplies and running water.

1. This documentary was filmed in June in Liberia. At the time there had only been 7 deaths. Its not a medical documentary but rather more of social or cultural.


2. This one was filmed in Sierra Leon in August. You can see the step up of officials and the medical community. Even then its not anywhere near what it should be.

If anyone is concerned about this outbreak and want REAL information on the origins, cures and spread this is a great documentary by the BBC. Tons of great information from the '70s until the present.Interviewed are actual doctors, scientist and the like. No voodoo crazy stuff.

I am not ashamed to admit this Ebola really has me freaked out. I can be sarcastic, and skeptical about a lot of things but not this. I SWEAR to this ~ at my front door is a huge bottle of hand sanitizer. Your not coming in my house unless you use it. I have 3 spray bottles of 1:10 bleach and have been spraying everything down. I tried to spray my sleeping 17 year old ... he took issue with this. I yelled at him, "DO YOU WANT EBOLA?!" "Oh yes mom! I would love some Ebola cause then you would let me sleep!"

I am not sure if its the incompetency of our medical crews and EOC or the fact I have 3 kids that go to 3 different schools (1 living in the dorms at university) and kids are the main spreader of anything nasty. Living in hurricane zones my entire life I have seen our govt. in action during an emergency. I promise you its not pretty.

I am not a doomsday kind of person but I am freaked out over this. The family of this Dallas guy still has all of the stuff in their apartment!!! 1 bathroom (which he used many times while sick) and 4 people!
Throw in the 100-200 people he came into contact with in the Dallas area. Ebola is not the common cold ~ it is extremely easy to catch if your near a patient.
