'Dance protest' of Church of Scientology in St. Paul a go. Vuvuzela playing? Limited. -

    By Frederick Melo

The St. Paul City Council voted to allow a planned "dance protest" outside of the Church of Scientology in downtown St. Paul, but limited a requested noise variance to a single hour.

Members of Minnesota Anonymous had applied for a noise variance from 10:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Feb. 10. The group's application listed vuvuzelas, the type of horns used at sporting events, and speakers among their instruments.

"Free speech is one thing, and a total disruption of people's lives is another," said St. Paul City Council Member Dave Thune. "They're free, of course, to picket, carry signs, at various times."

Prior to the vote, Nancy Schumacher, a public affairs director for the Church of Scientology, told the council that a noisy protest would disrupt Sunday services, church courses and residential neighbors.

"The intent of the group is to actually harass and intimidate church members, and we're hoping you will vote against it," she said.

No one representing Minnesota Anonymous spoke at the hearing.

You need to dance in an outside protest in Mpls this time of year. Otherwise you might freeze to death.

If the weather is bad would it be rescheduled? Maybe not because of the approval of the noise allowence?
  6. Anonychops Member

WWP does not encourage the use of wine cubes, although it is permitted to mention other people's use of them.

This is from the same reporter that was quoted in this thread's first post.

In St. Paul, Scientology protesters turn in one of their own -

    By Frederick Melo

Wearing signature white masks, members of the group Minnesota Anonymous protested outside of the Church of Scientology on Wabasha Street in downtown St. Paul on Sunday, Feb. 10. The protest, which was expected to last roughly six hours, drew a modest turnout amid the snowfall, with seven Anonymous members congregating quietly across the street from the church in the early afternoon in an effort to call attention to what they deemed to be cultlike practices.

A protestor wrote an inflammatory message in red chalk on the church wall, but other protestors discouraged his behavior and alerted St. Paul police.

Anonymous planned additional protests of the church around the world. Feb. 10 would have marked the 54th birthday of Lisa McPherson, a former Scientology church member who died in Clearwater, Fla., under suspicious circumstances on Dec. 5, 1995. Two felony charges against the church were dropped in June 2000, and her official cause of death was changed from "undetermined" to "accident."

Nancy Schumacher, a public affairs director for the Church of Scientology, asked the St. Paul City Council on Wednesday, Feb. 6, not to grant Anonymous a noise variance. "The intent of the group is to actually harass and intimidate church members," she said. The council granted a variance for one hour, rather than the six that Anonymous had requested.
