Technology giant Google has developed state of the art software which proactively scours hundreds of millions of email accounts for images of child abuse.

The breakthrough means paedophiles around the world will no longer be able to store and send vile images via email without the risk of their crimes becoming known to the authorities.

Privacy rights come up against law enforcement often. It's hard to see Google congratulated for systematically spying on all of us, even when the outcome is pedophile arrests. More of these examples of the questionable benefits of loss of privacy will follow.

The FBI is on trial, caught in the middle of allegations that it stepped out of bounds by sending what was essentially a virus to unsuspecting computer users. Operation Torpedo originated out of computers in Bellevue.

One of the targeted websites had 10,000 images of child pornography. It had 5,600 members and 24,000 postings on the message boards with categories that include babies and teenage girls.
At issue in the suppression hearing is how the government collected the IP addresses and whether the rules of search warrants were followed.
Over the course of the day, 17 attorneys for 14 defendants filed into a courtroom as local FBI representatives explained how the Bureau tracked down dozens of child pornography suspects.

It’s one of the most powerful tools in the black hat arsenal, capable of delivering thousands of fresh victims into a hackers’ clutches within minutes.
Now the technique is being adopted by a different kind of a hacker—the kind with a badge. For the last two years, the FBI has been quietly experimenting with drive-by hacks as a solution to one of law enforcement’s knottiest Internet problems: how to identify and prosecute users of criminal websites hiding behind the powerful Tor anonymity system.

Such dragnet searching needs more scrutiny, Soghoian says. “What needs to happen is a public debate about the use of this technology, and the use of these techniques,” he says. “And whether the criminal statutes that the government relies on even permit this kind of searching. It’s one thing to say we’re going to search a particular computer. It’s another thing to say we’re going to search every computer that visits this website, without knowing how many there are going to be, without knowing what city, state or countries they’re coming from.”
“Unfortunately,” he says, “we’ve tiptoed into this area, because the government never gave notice that they were going to start using this technique.”
