When Lifton coined the term "charismatic leader" he was not talking about the personality of the person. Hubbard is still considered the charismatic leader of Scientology AND the Freezone. The charismatic leader" simply was meant to describe the ideas of the person, not the way the leader interacts with the followers.

You can exit a cult w/ out a shrink but having someone that understands the details of how you where treated and someone who can see how things changed you from before to after sure sounds like a plus to me. It beats getting advice from some stranger on the internet.

The problem some people have with their shrinks is that some (fewer and fewer these days) once thought that the person was lacking something and sought out the cult. That is not now commonly believed among psychologists.

When you get info on "healing" from other ex's it is good to know you are not alone in the world but don't take their advice on how you help yourself they are to close to the issue.

I was reading through the thread and I don't know why it didn't occur to me earlier. But, if a church asked you for $10m dollars, wouldn't you be even slightly suspicious.

I feel sorry for Steve Brackett's kids.

Jumping off a bridge makes you

    a) OT

    b) exterior

    c) dead

    d) all of the above

Re: Steve Brackett - OT - commits suicide

Write to state officials, and ask that a permanent memorial be built at the bridge where he jumped. Don't mention suicide - pretend you heard that he died in a head-on collision, and demand that something done about the dangerous traffic situation where he died.

There should also be a fund-raising website in loving memory of Steve. Announce that donations will be used for research in "preventing head-on collisions".

The outrage generated when people learn how he really died will naturally cause them to ask questions that CoS doesn't want asked.

    Interesting ideas.

Why not just tell the truth about him right from the start.

Set up a fund raising website to help research why so many Scio die young/commit suicide etc. That way the anger is correctly placed at the c of s and not the idiot that set up the lying website.

Chrisanon mentioned irremediable pain and I tend to agree. People just don't kill themselves without some sort of protracted inner emotional struggle. The "serious suicides" like Brackett are quiet beforehand and them promptly end it in a way that is guaranteed not to fail. This contrasts with failed suicide attempts that are a cry for help.

I wonder if Steve Brackett was facing bankruptcy? If someone is fiftyish and goes bankrupt, that is brutal. To start over at ~50 without the boundless energy and idealism of youth would be depressing, especially if you had been wealthy. The loss of status alone could crush some people. Wealth opens so many doors. When the money is gone all of the doors slam shut. There is also the question of some health problem. What if he had been diagnosed with some aggressive form of cancer? Scientology punishes all human frailty as being an ethics problem that one pulled in. Steve may have indeed been suffering from irremediable emotional pain over the consequences he faced as a Scientologist.

Someone over at ESMB trivialized Steve's death in a DMesque fashion by arguing that "wogs" commit suicide all the time but that when Scn's do it gets published widely and globally. This show the Scientology inability to get it: Steve's death is news because he was OT and CoS claims superhuman powers for OT's. Therefore, an OT should be at cause over MEST and able to handle anything that life throws his or her way. What Steve's death shows, for the nth time, is that OT does not exist and does not confer immunity from life and age, suffering and death, upon anyone. OT cannot alter the human condition.

    *****
IAS is Scientology's caste system. To plunge from the top of the caste system with Nancy Cartwright as your beloved to being broke would be a huge loss of face. Without money and social prominence, CC might send you over to AO with the regular unwashed publics. If Steve were facing serious financial and/or health and other problems that would have caused him to lose face within Scientology, he may elected to end it. In any case, my heart goes out to his family.

Every time a person taking antidepressants commits suicide, the CCHR says it was because of the drugs. This is despite the fact that depressed and suicidal people are often given antidepressants because they are depressed and suicidal.

At the very least it's right to point out that the tech does not always work.

Dare I say that he might also have been facing irremediable pain over the breakup with the Bitch Cartwright?

Re: Steve Brackett - OT - commits suicide

I feel bad for the poor man, and angry that his mother and daughters are being lied to about his death, and saddened that, yet again, Scientology has neither worked NOR helped people.

I'm also pretty pissed that Cartwright couldn't be bothered to honour her ex-fiance by making an appearance at his funeral. I suppose that "earn money, gain fame, promote Scientology" and the "why be upset; he just shed his meat body" programming made her choice easier for her.

The person at ESMB claiming that "no wogs' deaths ever get mentioned" is a pinhead. Plenty of ex-Scilons die and are covered by the media; if you deliberately limit your worldview and information to Scilon-related sites and fail to read the news or watch it, that is your own ostrich-y fault. What does s/he expect, reading an ex-Sci message board? OF COURSE Scilon deaths are going to be mentioned there far more often, as that is actually relevant to the forum topic.

    Gah.

Anyway. Again, I feel bad for the poor guy, and his bereaved loved ones, and I, for one, could think of a lot better ways to waste millions of dollars than to give it to the cult.

This is so sad. Steve Brackett sounds like a good man and a good father.

To come to such a tragic end, and then to have the church LIE about how he died.

Also: "Please feel free to let others know who may want to wish him a fond farewell and new beginning." A NEW BEGINNING... he has to start the Bridge all over again.

Perhaps the entire "relationship" was never anything more than well orchestrated shake down. Is there any real evidence that Cartwright has handed over the kind of cash that the cult is claiming that she has? What would stop them from creating the illusion and then hooking her up with some gullible narcissist for just long enough to milk him dry.

The O T level could make ya do alone ,
    Heavey braine washing .

Reason they do is they make you re- live sifi night mare . some time for hour,s at a time,
and you have to solo them ever day.

And if the pre - O T believe this really happend to him,
and most Scientologist do , it makes it even worse.

They are truely demonic processing .

Re: Steve Brackett - OT - commits suicide

Actually that's a very interesting point.

Because the higher level stuff is solo auditing, and you aren't allowed to discuss your "case" with anyone else, you have no "anchor in reality" that you can talk to who will say "now come on Bob, let's look at this from another angle" in the same way that Christians might do a Bible Study.

Without an anchor on reality, your mind can wander off into unknown depths with no way to stop it - "freewheeling" is a term Flubbtard uses if you read OT3 too early that sounds like the sort of thing relevant to this.

Re: Steve Brackett - OT - commits suicide

Only about a couple months before Steve's tragic death I recieved help for my suicidal thoughts. My family led me to a doctor who gave me a perscription for depression and anxiety along with some therapy. This economy has had a very hard impact on many who depend on construction in California for a living. I know that I'm not alone.

When I started feeling better, I went to pay Steve a visit to ask him for a job. I previously worked for Steve for 3 years as a supervisor and liked him as a person.

He acted as if he had a project for me but I suspected that he primarily wanted me to see his new office which I never had the opportunity to see finished. That was his baby and he was very proud of it. He looked very pale and lost a lot of weight as I explained to him. You don't realize how much of a chain smoker someone is untill you have been away for awhile.

So I followed up on his potential prospect with only been told to call back next week.

Finally after a couple weeks of seeing Steve, Kevin told me that Steve had died. No details. I called Margaret and she told me that Steve had an accident and the police are investigating it.

Denise never returned any of my phone calls. Another Supervisor called me to inform me of his funeral and that was it. He is gone. No explanation.

I remember the museum on Sunset blvd that portrayed the science of Psychology as something evil.

I spend a lot of time thinking about Steve-- he had a termendous impact on me.

I sometimes wonder what Icould say to Steve if I were on that bridge with him in order to stop him.

There is nothing I can say --- he had Scientology and I didn't. I have loved ones to talk to directly and he didn't. He had to make an appointment with Scientology to discuss his personal issues.

I have medication that helped me through these rough times. I'm almost off them now. But Steve is already off that bridge.

    I'm sorry Steve

    Rest in peace.

I'm really sorry for your loss. I can't imagine how difficult it must be to have been in Steve's life just before he died.

It's great that you got help for your depression. It's what we all wish Steve could have had too. So, I hope you will soak up all the help you can get to help you get through this time. Every time you take a step toward your own mental health and connection with your own friends and family, you make this world a little less tragic and desperate. I hope that can somehow bring you comfort.

Don't let this get you down. Something good will surely come of your speaking up. It's already happening.

Medication does work for so many. Appropriate medical care is something scientology is guilty of not recommending members go receive, even discouraging them to seek help. The anti-psych stuff in the agreements members are required to sign and the problem of being depressed with the feeling of having no way to correct it, is really the issue here.

Keep making the most of your concern for him by doing what you are doing.
    Thanks for posting :)

2008...wasn't that the year Scientology went totally bonkers with people being imprisoned, people killing themselves or co-workers...all to prove that nope, they are totally not as crazy as people say, no, not at all, they're just misrepresented. 2008 was seriously the craziest year for Scientology watchers, not only for the anonymous phenomenon but the cult's reaction to it.
