Dallas Fire Rescue battles 3-alarm blaze at White Rock area mansion | WFAA Dallas - Fort Worth
October 3, 2013
A three alarm fire tore through a mansion near White Rock Lake, causing authorities to shut down Buckner Blvd. in both directions for a time Thursday afternoon.
The home, located at 1850 Buckner Blvd., went up in flames at about 3:25 p.m. A second alarm was called at 4:25 p.m. and a third came at 4:55 p.m. The location is between Garland Rd. and Interstate 30.
The mansion is vacant but its owners were on scene, said Dallas Fire Rescue spokesman Jason Evans. He said the first firefighters on scene reported seeing black smoke coming from under the roof of the two-story home.
"I am told that the roof is made of such a material that it is not only keeping the fire inside the structure, but it is also slowing the ability of firefighters to put water on it from above," he wrote in an e-mail.
The residence is the former home of the Center for Scientology.
Is it still owned by CoS? Is this yet another "mysterious" fire at a CoS owned property?
The fire was reported in the 1800 block of North Buckner Boulevard. The home was the former church of Scientology. It is now owned by Dave Anderson who told NBC 5 that no one was living in the home. It was in process of a remodel.
Uh, thanks. <<<now embarrassed that I didn't find that out myself>>>
That looks horrible.

Fire destroyed vacant 10,000-square-foot home in East Dallas that was uninsured
Hard to tell from the pics, but it looks like a ceramic tile or slate roof. Speaking as a ex-volunteer fireman, from a firefighting point of view such roofs are a PIA. They're very difficult to vent, and trap heat inside to the point a flashover or backdraft situation developing inside is almost a given. Very, very dangerous to enter.
From the reports, tile with a layer of metal sheet under that--a nasty EZ-Bake oven.
