TEMPEST in a Teacup

    The talking heads are making a fuss about the revelation that we can remotely scan a computer -- this is far from news inside the Tech world. I personally recall reading of TEMPEST back in the 90s; I believe that it was mentioned at some length in Ira Winkler's Corporate Espionage.

    Old old news. Back in the day, I saw a Tempest certified PC. By the time it had passed through the certification process, it was a few years behind the power curve.

    The fun part about sending something in for Tempest or crypto certification is that if they reject it, they don't tell you why. I guess that's to encourage people to have everything right rather than just flinging it at the fence and patching until it goes over.

    And if you change the slightest thing, you have to re-certify. Good times, good times...
