Here comes the policy on "Advance!" magazines, written by the lovely Diana Horwich/Hubbard:
Here is a Village Voice article on some early editions of "Advance!": Scientology's OT Powers! A Hubbard Holiday Miracle
Thanks, I wondered for a long time about this particular magazine's insistence on degrading old religious beliefs and countering with the "superior" scientology cult woo.
Tony O's use of the old advance covers sent me down memory lane. When I was a teen I babysat for one family that had a stack of these on the coffee table. I'm pretty sure no-one in the neighborhood knew they were clams...or maybe they did, I also babysat for a ba'hai couple and we had an eckankar family just down the block (as well as a bunch of those christian freaks who wouldn't let their kids celebrate the fun holidays). Being the curious sort about spirituality, I tried to read a few. Yeah, they were just as dumb then as they are now. I found I preferred babysitting for the family that had a pile of rock albums, 'The Story of O' and an open liquor cabinet.
