I have been working on updating a timeline we did in february (if anyone remembers #reports on partyvan, its the one from there.) It is still a mess and still basically the file from february with some edits from march, but if you load this up and slide to the left you will see a good start on a timeline of pre-chanology events and references. If you slide to the right you see jan/feb of chanology, with links.

It is not anywhere near ready/done/complete. It could use a lot more data points. <-- hint hint.

So is anyone up for helping add more data to this and updating/fixing what is there? Maybe even filling in march->november for chanology? I think its a good start, and the best part about storing the data in xml is that it can be converted and used in other tools if we feel like it.

ps: as stated on that timeline, a lot of the dates for scientology related stuff come from: Scn-Chronology

pps: if you want the code from this just download these 3 files and host them all in the same directory. You can see all the data is just in an xml file and you can just add events in there.

ppps: if anyone wants to help get more data into the timeline it should just be in the same format that the xml file has. Date/time, title, optional description.

    Re: Timeline?

The XML formatting is pretty easy, actually.. here is a snippet of a single event.

    <event start="Jan 13 2008 20:29:00 EST" title="Gawker posts Cruise video" link="">
In the context of the lawsuit threatened against Andrew Morton for his
unauthorized bio of Tom Cruise, Gawker posts the Tom Cruise video for the
first time after being linked by Mark Ebner, an investigative reporter.
As you can see it's just the Date+Time, the title, a url, and the description. This could easily be compiled in this thread or elsewhere simply by replying and including that information.

If for some reason that still seems too hard, I could work on creating a simple web interface for it.. but I'd like a few submissions for updates before I start coding! :)

can that xml schema be customized further? would be nice to add a group attribute to event nodes, and allow for labeling data points in layers

That's pretty godamned awesome. It'll take a hell of a long time to fill in all these points, especially since so much has happened. Hopefully, I'll be able to dataflood it sometime soon.

The project is coming along. Just a heads up, its being brought up to the latest version of the timeline code, and groups/categories and different views are being worked on. Once the base of it is done it will need the data.

This timeline could be used as an epic re-launch of operation chanology on our 1-year anniversary.

posting this timeline will show everyone how much we have achieved, and that lulz is easier to hit than shooting fish in a barrel - hopefully leading to renewed interest from potential new anons.

    Re: Timeline?

pooks the stuff you posted is fantastic, ignore the noob who obviously has never heard of webscraper.

the smaller webpage collections can be mined, harvested, and turned into delicious data no sweat. however, kristi's "on this day in scilon history" is big big data...

any chance you could poke a question to her about about either surfacing a link to allow anonymous download of an export or dump file of that stuff like RHill's timeline webpage has? or... if not a link, send a dump via email & PM either me or gregg for fwd'ing addy to relay it to? thks so much!!

    Re: Timeline?

Kristi here. (Thanks to the friend who emailed me about this thread.)

I am big on sharing data (I believe data wants to be free) and I'm happy to share what I have. Feel free to email me at to request data format (tab-delimited is easiest for me, but let me know what fields you need, and if you MUST have XML, let me know and I'll see what I can do) and let me know if there's a subset you want. It looks like there are some differing views on whether you're focusing on Anonymous or on Scn generally.

Or, if it is would be helpful - it's possible I can set up a subscribable feed? Let me know if that would be useful.

Also, I've been planning on setting up the This Day in Scientology History stuff to have multiple timelines for a long time. At the moment, I'm trying to make sure I've got useful stories for every day of the year - I have a good 20-30 entries for every day, but a lot of those are really brief, maybe just the name of a bulletin LRH wrote or whatever. I'm trying to flesh out each day to highlight the most interesting stories. Today's highlights (On This Day in Scientology History - December 06 | Scientology Lies) include the Mary Johnston case in Ireland, Lisa McPherson's family leading a protest in Clearwater, and the fate of the CAN files. Coming up tomorrow (On This Day in Scientology History - December 7 | Scientology Lies), we've got Mary Sue sentenced to prison, raids in Italy, and Scn going after Sid Klein. These things are (mostly) tagged with tags - lawsuits, Lisa, Italy - and as soon as I can get around to it, I plan to drop in a plugin to use the Simile timeline generator for all of them. (Even now, you can see chronological events for each tag: Germany | Scientology Lies )

    * I'm happy to share my data; let me know (email's best) what you want
    * I'd love to add your timeline data into mine - if you're willing to share, please send me your data file (and maybe we can talk about how we can update each other without duplicating data?)
    * Also, I'd love it if folks would link to more - I think there's a lot of data there that's not necessarily being seen and used as much as it could be (no doubt my fault; I know there are broken links and things I could do to make the site better ... just too many tasks and not enough time)

On a complete side note (well, it's related to data sharing ...), I've got a lot more completions data coming in (mostly 1970s and 1980s), and once I get that database wrangled into shape, I'll be happy to make another iteration of that available.

Thanks for keeping stuff going, y'all. It's amazing to see so much energy poured into raising awareness about Scientology's abuses. (Applauding)

    Re: Timeline?

followup with Kristi done, we shall have the "this day in scilon history" data in near future for porting into the Chanology Timeline 2.0

and.... oh snap - looky here what i just found!

    ABC News: Scientology Timeline

Update on things: data collection & mining have progressed to the point where we got big juicy dumps of delicious data ported into a backend database (for automating future xml generation), and exported bak out spreadsheet form that is available here that is ready for collaborative effort cleanup:

^^Notice at the bottom of that google doc, we got 3 tabs or sheets: Source Data (used to churn out xml), EventClass Types (defines categories & groups for presenting a timeline with the ability to view all data points or a specific subset), and Change Log (keeps track of sources, import & export history).

Any and all interested in lending some halp to the ongoing data harvesting effort, PM me for moar details. We need data cleanup editors to get the dumped data in good form. And webscrapers or copypasta artists to compile more good stuff to be added to the list.

Added Bonus - We can now pull in data from more than just xml sources... comma or tab separated flatfiles as well as other spreadsheets used as a copypasta source work just as well and saves some coding grunt werk.

Oh and speaking of webscrapers.... HALP WANTED: we really really need to get a dump of WikiLeaks dox & details to pull into the mix!

    Re: Timeline?

massive data mining done - the results are still being groomed & merged on the google doc spreadsheets mentioned earlier on this thread and elsewhere.

team work effort of the data cleanup grunt work has been sparse - so its taking a while tp get done. spreadsheet savvy anons still desparately needed - if your interested in helping please pm me.

we also got a rough prototype website put together for what the new improved timeline will look like - but note, this stills needs new data and made pretty with pro web designer skillz

Chanology Timeline - The Fight Against Scientology

halp also needed on making ^^THIS look more polished as well, likewise pm me or gregg if your up to the task.

but worth noting on what can be seen on the prototype webpage - the timeline legend shows how our > 9000 data points will be categorized once the data cleanup effort is done & the new xml is generated. Plus you can see how we'll also be able to use the dropdown menus to slice 'n dice what subset of data points are displayed.

    Re: Timeline?

wow - that a whole lot of data! i'm abit overwhelmed with too much data at the moment (just cuz i aint got a lot of help to cleanup whats alreeady been mined) to tackle pulling in yours too... but thats not saying i'm not interested in tapping into it eventually if you can get it into a format similar to what you see the google doc spreadsheets.

big thing for making it easy to merge your data in with the rest is matching the oddball date format (MMM DD YYYY -- xml style). that way i can programatically identify duplicates.

    Re: Timeline?

maybe - thks for the bump, i've been meaning to shift bak to this gear.

we currently got approx 10k of data mining records gathered. the majority of those were easily cleaned up & classified, and are waiting to get run thru a de-dup process once the records that werent easily classifed are groomed into place on the following google doc:

    HALP Needed:

    • get a gmail account (preferably a throw away) so you can do grunt work edits to above spreadsheet doc
    • PM me your gmail addy so i can send an invite to grant editing access
    • Pick a month, any month except January (thats already done) **
    • Scan thru the rows of your month (see EventStart) & review the last 2 columns on the right - EventText & EventClass
    • Any row missing BOTH EventText & EventClass - DO LOOKUP:
      1. Follow the url under EventLink column
      2. copypasta or write a short description / brief abstract of what it is
      3. Add descriptive blurb to EventText column in spreadsheet (then we can easily classify the EventClass value in one big sweep afterwards)
    • Rinse, lather, repeat the above step until you finish your chosen month.
    • If you find any bad urls or meh-puff-piece items not worth keeping, delete the row.
    • Holla bak on this thread (or via PM) which month you be doing in case we get multiple hands on deck willing to help out here.

** UPDATE: April, August & December is nao taken. anyone else interested?

    Re: Timeline?

the data gathered into googledoc spreadsheets still needs grunt werk effort to finish clean up & classifying for xml generation thats used by the timeline veiwer tool

i had other projects come up & after doing a huge time-sink into this mostly by myself, burn out set it and i had to sit it aside for awhile. but my desk will be clearer in a few weeks and was planning to dig bak into this by July1.

but for those wishing like me we had this tool in a finished state... get yerself a gmail account (throwaway is fine) & PM it to me to get a share invite sent so u can help on spreadsheet data-dump cleanup front.

once thats done, rolling the site live & automagically updating it on occaison (and making the data dumps available for other mining efforts) is no big deal, all the data handling/xml generation/importing/exporting functions for the backend is built, just needs clean categorized data.
