I drove by about 2 hours ago and it was dead.

There are large white sheets covering up some of the windows & upper portions of the building
  3. The white sheets are to cover up the signage and logos. You can see the sheet in Phil Jones's picture covering what is obviously a sign for the studio's main entrance. Clearly, they haven't opened yet.
  4. They will probably put up their usual ribbon crap the day before the opening event.

This morning, Tony Ortega published an update. Quote:

Our second item comes from one of our most dogged, and most unsung, secret researchers. This person is indefatigable, hunting down amazing things for us that help us piece together our stories. And the other day, he stumbled across a small but perhaps telling thing about the Scientology Media Productions complex that we thought you might find interesting.

SMP is the expensive new set of studios that Scientology has created out of the old KCET complex in Los Angeles that the church purchased in 2011. It was supposed to have its grand opening last Saturday, but then we heard that the ceremony was postponed. But at Mike Rinder’s blog, the former Scientology spokesman said he was told that the SMP did open in a stealth ceremony. We’re still looking for confirmation of that.

In the meantime, we continue to wonder, what exactly are they going to do with this thing? Scientology already has a well-known set of state-of-the-art film studios, its Golden Era Productions complex at Gold Base, near Hemet, California. What are they going to do with the SMP?

Scientology’s marketing materials have implied that the church is starting up its own television station, and for a few years we’ve been having some fun imagining what Scientology TV programming would be like. But so far, we’ve been unable to find proof that Scientology has applied for, or received, a broadcasting license for a TV station.

Then, our dogged researcher noticed something. At Scientology’s application for a trademark on the SMP’s logo, it listed the following as the purpose of the facility:

Notice there’s no mention of broadcasting, just pre-recorded video. We can imagine that this description is not the last word on what will be going on at the SMP, but it makes you wonder. Did Scientology spend millions for the acquisition and renovation of the KCET studios so it can merely pump out more DVDs and YouTube videos?

If that’s the case, is the SMP mostly a fundraising tool, and a way for church leader David Miscavige to pull more workers out of Gold Base, which he’s been doing steadily since it was revealed in 2009 to contain a bizarre office-prison known as “The Hole”? Well, we wouldn’t put it past him.

    * Purchase failed TV station
    * Use fake promises about it to bilk rich rubes
    * Actually use it as auxiliary private prison for more of my disgruntled slaves

Just a typical church leader's to do list.

Tom Cruise supports this (and vice versa).

  7. I can just drive by again and see whether the white sheets are still there.

Idk why they would keep them there if they had somehow opened already in a "stealth ceremony."

Opening in a "stealth ceremony" and then leaving the sheets up covering their signs & logos even after their opening - for a media/PR facility, no less! - would be like a billboard broadcasting to the world that Scientology is a wounded animal.

The CoS will keep the sheets there until they open the building. After the building is opened, they will remove the sheets for good.

Here are the instructions Scientologists are getting for the May 28 media center opening!

By Tony Ortega, May 19, 2016

Another day, another leak here at the Underground Bunker from an active member of the Church of Scientology. This one, in fact, is a current staffer.

That’s all we can tell you, but our source wanted everyone to see the list of instructions sent to Scientologists for the big May 28 opening of the new Scientology Media Productions facility.

In 2011, the church purchased the old KCET television studios at 4401 Sunset Boulevard in Hollywood, and they’ve been fundraising and renovating since then to create a new set of state-of-the art television and radio studios there. Scientology already has a set of expensive studios at its International Base near Hemet, California, about 90 miles away. But ever since Int Base was also revealed to house a bizarre office-prison known as “The Hole,” Scientology leader David Miscavige has been reducing the population in Hemet and lessening the compound’s importance. Now, he’ll have TV studios only 3.4 miles from his office at Author Services Inc. on Hollywood Boulevard.

“It seems as though this will be a complete logistical nightmare,” says our source. Well, judge for yourself. And if you plan on attending, please send us some photos! And always be polite and don’t argue with police or pushy Scientology security guards.

As Scientology prepares for Saturday’s grand opening, its controversial sign goes up

By Tony Ortega, May 25, 2016

The Church of Scientology’s new Los Angeles television studios on Sunset Boulevard suddenly became a hive of activity yesterday as preparations got underway for Saturday’s big grand opening. Scientology purchased the old KCET studios in 2011, and has been fundraising ever since to open what it’s calling “Scientology Media Productions,” a complex of TV and radio studios that the church says will help it get its message out.

But one move by the church took locals by surprise. Cranes lifted a sign to the top of the facility’s 15-story antenna yesterday evening, and on local websites residents were buzzing about whether this was the neon sign the church had been told it couldn’t put on the tower.

One of our readers lives in the neighborhood, and he tells us he’s pretty shocked to see the sign go up. Two of the people on his block are on the neighborhood council. “They said that the [church’s] application was rescinded based on advice from the council, but we’re gonna have to find out what really happened,” he says.

I think folks can get through TSA lines at LAX airport much more quickly and they are looking for weapons and bombs: 11-20 min., 21-30 min., 31+ min.

    Did you also notice this?:
"You may bring your child to SMP, but they must be supervised at all times."

So, if scifags are under 18, they don't have state i.d. yet, they are magically exempt from the security clearance process that takes 2-3 hours.
I thought the paranoia level during the 1970's - 1990's was high. It sucks to be them.

Will Scientology’s celebrities heed the call and show up for today’s big media center opening?

By Tony Ortega, May 28, 2016

We hope to be hearing from several of our readers who will be on the scene today as Scientology has its latest grand opening, this time in Los Angeles for what is the most unusual and anticipated opening of a Scientology facility in nearly three years.

Today, we think the chances for spotting Scientology celebrities may be pretty high.

Miscavige will be presiding over the grand opening of “Scientology Media Productions,” the renovated complex of television and radio studios that were the KCET studios on Sunset Boulevard the church purchased in 2011.

We thought it was odd that Miscavige made that purchase — Scientology already has state-of-the-art studios and production facilities at its International Base, a secretive compound about 90 miles east of L.A., near Hemet, California. Also known as “Gold Base” for the presence of the studios and its production company, Golden Era Productions, that complex is fully capable of producing the many internal videos or other recordings that the church needs. So why raise money to set up another set of studios inside Hollywood itself?

“This is really just to impress Hollywood media and Hollywood talent,” says a Scientology member affiliated with its Celebrity Centre who asked us not to use his name. “Some of the talent in Los Angeles was impressed by Gold, and a lot of celebs went up there when it first opened, even some who weren’t Scientologists. But since news about ‘The Hole’ got out, no one wants to go out there anymore.”

In 2009, news of Scientology’s bizarre office-prison for executives, “The Hole,” was exposed in the media for the first time, five years after it had first been created by Miscavige. Since then, Miscavige has been de-emphasizing the importance of the Hemet compound, and the number of Sea Org workers there is much lower, our sources tell us.

“My theory is that Hemet is going to be just a re-education center. Not much is going to happen there. So you can’t really have a media center there. Buying KCET’s studios and renovating them is a way to create a clean slate and impress the people in the L.A. area,” our celebrity source says. “The target audience is all the celebs. This is their opportunity now to have something like Gold right in their backyard.”

Judging by the frantic calls he’s been getting from church executives begging him to come to the grand opening, our source says he expects other Celebrity Centre members have been getting the same appeals. “Every celebrity, big or small, is being told to be there.”

But will they show up? And will we get a glimpse of them?

Today, we expect to hear from numerous people who are planning to be on the scene. We hope they can get us some reports, and we’ll post them here when we get them. Scientology tends to post its own press release and photos from the event about a day later. Will Cruise show up? Travolta? Kirstie Alley? The younger celebs, many of whom grew up in the church? We have to admit, we’re pretty excited to find out.

It’s a miracle! Scientology put ‘more than 10,000’ people in these 1,000 chairs!

By Rod Keller, May 29, 2016

Yesterday, the Church of Scientology posted an overhead photo of the chairs it had put out for its grand opening of its new media center in Los Angeles (a cropped version of that photo is shown above). Several of our readers made counts of those chairs, and all came up with an agreement of around 1,000 seats.

In short videos that were posted from the event, attendees could also be seen on balconies and other areas. So, a generous estimate for the total number of people who attended the brief ceremony would be about 2,000. With the foreshortening effect from Scientology’s use of wide-angle lenses (and not with Photoshop, as is so often leveled at the church) the crowd looks bigger than that, as you’ll see in the photos. But this event is down from the 2,500 people Scientology attracted three years ago for its last really big opening in the US, the November 2013 dedication of the Flag Building in Clearwater, Florida.

And Los Angeles is generally understood to have the largest concentration of Scientologists in the world. So 2,000 is a pretty unimpressive showing for a group that claims to be the fastest growing religion on earth, with millions of members. (A 2012 Scientology TV ad claimed that 4.4 million new members were joining every year.)

Once again, the turnout tends to corroborate what we’ve been hearing from inside Scientology, that the organization is shrinking fast and may now be under 20,000 active members worldwide at this point.

But even as Scientology is shrinking, its ability to lie like a rug is not in short supply. According to the church itself, David Miscavige presided over a ceremony that included an audience of “more than 10,000 Scientologists and friends.” None of the photos provided by the church show any of Scientology’s big celebrities, and so far, we’ve seen no reports that any of them were on hand, even though, as Tony reported yesterday, his inside source told him that celebrities were being hounded to attend.

Also, Scientology’s sign atop the SMP’s antenna did light up last night even though the church withdrew its request for permission from the local neighborhood council for the sign. It will be interesting to see if city officials do anything about it. We’re doubtful.

    Scientology Media Productions (SMP) Tour

    Here's the caption they wrote:

Welcome to Scientology Media Productions: Religion’s Massive Communications HQ Opens to the World!

    Take a tour! [link snipped]

Church’s advanced, multi-platform, totally reinvented and restored motion picture and television studio launched May 28 in Hollywood delivering the message of help — unadulterated and pure — everywhere.

One hundred fifty feet above Sunset Boulevard, at the center of a sprawling Hollywood, California, studio stands a communications tower emblazoned by a symbol: broadcasting waves flanking two triangles and a stylized “S”. The lofty logo boldly introducing itself to the entertainment-communications capital of the planet means only one thing.

“Our uncorrupted communication line to the billions,” said David Miscavige, the religion’s ecclesiastical leader, in a speech to more than 10,000 Scientologists and friends at the inauguration of the Church’s global media center. “Because as the saying goes, if you don’t write your own story, someone else will. So, yes, we’re now going to be writing our story like no other religion in history. And it’s all going to happen right here from Scientology Media Productions.”

Scientology Media Productions (SMP) is poised to broadcast important, good, vital news to the world. News reaching TV screens; facts and opinion destined to radios; magazines hot off of digital presses; information beamed to computers, tablets and cellphones.

Yes, Scientology is in the news — that’s certainly proof that the religion is so interesting. But now Scientology Media Productions IS the media.
