Leah Remini and Paulette Cooper? Scientology can start worrying now

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, May 21, 2015

We have some more scenes for you from our book tour in California. Previously, we posted a photograph of your proprietor with the lovely Leah Remini. The King of Queens actress had come by a party hosted by Spanky Taylor in order to pick up a copy of our book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely.

Leah also posed with Paulette Cooper, the subject of our book, and her husband Paul Noble. We sure love that photograph.

Also, from Sunday morning, video of our talk at the Steve Allen Theater on Hollywood. We’re introduced by CFI-West director James Underdown, and we got great questions from a capacity crowd.

That 63 page manuscript that Paulette Cooper and L.Ron Hubbard Junior wrote together in 1972 (before his flip-flopping craze began) really needs to be wikileaked!
Also, can't wait for the reports of Friday night where Jamie DeWolf's show will include a naked performance by a Tom Cruise lookalike :D

    yes and oh YES!!!
For da lulz. Not because I am hot for Tommy boy by any means (in case that needed explaining :D)
  4. Might be interesting but I tend to be skeptical of a lot of claims Nibs made. He does provide compelling evidence that Hubbard was a terrible father, though.

Jamie DeWolf's Holy Shit Show circus game show lampoons Scientology

In addition to the zaniness, the show will begin with special guests Tony Ortega and Paulette Cooper, who will lead a no holds barred discussion and Q&A. Two of the most knowledgeable journalists on the subject of Scientology, Ortega was featured in HBO’s "Going Clear", and Paulette Cooper wrote one of the first exposes about the cult in the 1970s, which resulted in her being ruthlessly targeted by the infamous cult.

 Tickets are $20.

Humanist Society Talk: Scientology | Santa Barbara Edhat

By Robert Bernstein, May 22, 2015

Scientology was the topic of the May Humanist Society talk. Back in the 1960s the writer Paulette Cooper had researched and written about Scientology. And suffered greatly for doing so.

Journalist Tony Ortega has just written a book "The Unbreakable Miss Lovely: How the Church of Scientology Tried to Destroy Paulette Cooper". Both Paulette and Tony spoke to a packed event. Many Tony Ortega fans came from out of town.

Paulette Cooper has a surprise for Scientology and the residents of a certain Florida town

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, May 24, 2015

Your proprietor spent Saturday recovering from the twisted Friday night put on by L. Ron Hubbard’s great-grandson, Jamie DeWolf, which included a three-hour circus at Chez Poulet in San Francisco.

Just before the trouble started, we snapped this photo backstage of DeWolf, “LRH,” and Paulette Cooper. It only got weirder from there.

Our book tour’s leg in California is finished, and we’re pretty exhausted and not really capable of doing much reporting right now. But we did want to fill you in on one small piece of news.

Finally, we can give you some details about next month’s appearance in Florida. We wanted to wait until the venue and time was securely nailed down before saying anything, for reasons you can appreciate. Now, we can reveal that on Sunday June 28, at 2 pm, your proprietor and Paulette Cooper will be making an appearance in none other than Clearwater.

Yes, just a few blocks away from Scientology’s spiritual headquarters in downtown Clearwater, Florida, we’ll be appearing with Paulette at the Clearwater Public Library, courtesy of the folks at Center for Inquiry-Tampa Bay, who have been so welcoming and have worked hard to make this happen.

See you there on June 28!

Scientology, SPs and Miss Lovely in Hollywood

    Published by ToryMagoo44 on May 31, 2015

The Unbreakable Miss Lovely is an amazing book, written by Tony Ortega about the famous Paulette Cooper and her experiences with the insanities of Scientology, and much, much more. Tony (from "The Underground Bunker" see has a game of the best locations "Miss Lovely" can be seen at. These are some highlights of our very funny (and suppressive) day with Miss Lovely in Hollywood. Enjoy! :)

Listen to Jim Jones root for Scientology against Paulette Cooper in a 1978 Jonestown address

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker

Now that we’re into a new month and our book, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, is taking us on tours around the country (and soon across the pond), we’re going to begin posting material here that supplements our story about Paulette Cooper.

Miss Lovely is a book that looks at Paulette’s entire life, from her survival of the Holocaust as a small child to her more recent years as an author in Florida. But she’s most well known, of course, for her 1971 book, The Scandal of Scientology, which resulted in the most legendary campaign of retaliation and ruination in the history of Scientology’s spy wing, the Guardian’s Office. That campaign even included a plot to frame Paulette for a felony which resulted in her being indicted in 1973 and facing 15 years in federal prison.

In 1977 the FBI raided Scientology looking for evidence of the church’s infiltration and burglarizing of federal agencies, but the FBI also discovered evidence of the many plots against Paulette. Initially, the FBI had to remain quiet about what it found in the raid. But then, news that Paulette Cooper had been framed on orders from top Scientology officials finally became public after a pair of Washington Post stories by Ron Shaffer appeared on April 28 and 29, 1978, followed by many other reports in the press.

One person who took notice of those stories was an unlikely observer in South America.

Late in our book project, one of our researcher friends discovered that in a large collection of materials at San Diego State University, a really unique and disturbing audio recording exists. Collected by the Jonestown Institute at SDSU, it’s a recording of Peoples Temple leader Jim Jones, one of 971 tapes recovered by the FBI which preserve the cult leader giving his frequent addresses to his followers at the Jonestown compound in Guyana.

And on June 10, 1978, Jim Jones talked about Paulette Cooper.

Jones included it in his “mid-afternoon news” address, and he can be heard reading from a version of Shaffer’s April 29 story. Descriptions of Paulette’s harassment are provided to Shaffer by attorneys Paul Rheingold — who represented her in a 1972 harassment suit against the New York org — and Virgil Roberts — who had wrapped up a settlement in 1976 to end several of Scientology’s lawsuits against The Scandal of Scientology (see Chapter 13 in Miss Lovely).

What’s really interesting though is the way Jones interrupts his reading of the press account to provide his own running commentary — he’s sure that Scientology is getting the raw deal, and that Paulette was being unjustifiably exonerated.

At the beginning of the recording, you’ll hear Jones place the Peoples Temple in context to other groups — Synanon, the Black Panthers, and Scientology — that he apparently felt some kinship to, at least in the sense of a persecuted and misunderstood group. And why was Scientology being persecuted, according to Jim Jones?

“The reason for this, according to US UPI source that prefers to remain anonymous, is because Scientology has revealed how high the Nazi influence goes in the police work of USA, USA Customs, Treasury Department, and the police of the entire world. So the new attack. I’ll give you some detail of it,” he says.

So the revelations of the framing of Paulette Cooper are “the new attack” on Scientology, which Jones seems to feel is akin to an attack on the Peoples Temple, which is fascinating.

You’ll then hear him read from the newspaper article, making sarcastic asides about how he doubts the government’s “sources” — which were actually based on Scientology documents that would be released to the public a couple of years later.

It’s also fascinating to hear Jones express admiration for Scientology’s litigious attacks against Paulette and others.

Scientology, six degrees of separation, and Miss Lovely — author Paulette Cooper

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker

We are continuing to make use of material we learned as we researched the amazing life of author Paulette Cooper, but which, for one reason or another, we were not able to use in our book about her, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely, which was published last month. In this case, we have a parable of time and space.

Westward, Ho! Hey, Bunkerites, we need your help, and fast

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker

Hey, we need your help, Bunkerites. We had an opportunity suddenly come up, and decided to take it. Although it’s a bit last-minute, we realized that we had an open window for travel to some of the cities we want to visit on our book tour. So we grabbed it. Here are the dates and locations:

    July 17: Denver

    July 20: Dallas

    July 22: Houston

    July 24: San Antonio

    July 25: Austin

Now, the hard part. We need to find venues and connect with sponsoring groups who might help us put on these events. In our California trip, we had great success with the Center for Inquiry and other skeptics groups. We’re big fans of skeptics groups, and our book and its subject matter makes a natural fit with them. Also, we’re published by Silvertail Books in London, a small publisher, so we don’t have the kind of resources to plug into bookstores.

So, this being the age we live in, we decided to turn to the crowd for some help. We have some connections in each of these cities, but we need links to groups that would be interested in having us come to talk about Scientology and Paulette Cooper, groups that could book a venue quickly. We can take care of the rest — the reach of this website is such that we packed each of the places in California where we held events. (Paulette has other travel plans and won’t be accompanying us on this trip.)

Another request: New York Bunkerites, our venue Thursday night is the big back room at a restaurant, and we’ll need a microphone and speaker for Paulette and your proprietor. The restaurant doesn’t have a PA system for us to plug into, so we need some small mobile unit. Any suggestions? Is there an easy way to rent such a thing?

Scientology’s first big detractor recounts years in their crosshairs | WPIX-TV New York

Back in 1971, Paulette Cooper wrote “Scandal of Scientology,” a book she says made her the focus of the organization’s vengeful retribution.

Cooper says she was targeted by a rogue Scientology unit that launched “Operation Freakout” in an attempt to destroy the young woman they codenamed “Miss Lovely.”

Good morning, New York! Paulette Cooper is dishing on Scientology in the Big Apple today

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, June 14, 2015

On Wednesday, Paulette Cooper and your proprietor sat down with local New York TV legend Marvin Scott to record a show about our book that will be running this morning on WPIX 11.

The station posted the interview, in its three parts, last night on its website.

Let us know how you think we did, and please help us spread this interview far and wide.

The Scientology spy who came in from the cold: Len Zinberg, who apologized to Paulette Cooper

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, June 15, 2015

One of the things that made The Unbreakable Miss Lovely more than the telling of Paulette Cooper’s account of her years being harassed by Scientology were some of the other people who provided their own narratives of those events. And none of them provided quite so much impact as Len Zinberg.

While we were researching and writing the book, Zinberg suddenly showed up, emailing Paulette with an apology he said was a long time coming. He explained that in the early 1970s, he had been a Guardian’s Office volunteer, a young Scientologist who helped the church with its spy missions. And some of his assignments involved following or otherwise targeting Paulette.

Since leaving Scientology, he had begun to come to grips with what he’d done and then, in 2013, he had spotted an interview of Paulette by Mark Bunker. At that point, he could no longer remain silent, and he reached out to her. He then became a willing participant in our book project, and he’s been keeping quiet for almost two years now, looking forward to telling his story to you once the book was out.

So here, now, is the story of Len Zinberg. One of the very few Scientologists who has ever reached out to Paulette Cooper to apologize for what she endured.

    Your proprietor on the airwaves

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, June 17, 2015

We had a couple of interesting interviews show up last night. In both cases, they were long-format with great interviewers, and we had a lot of fun. We’ll try to embed both of them later, but for now go to Mandy Stadtmiller’s website and listen to her most recent “News Whore” podcast. We’ve been looking forward to being on her show a long time, and we want to thank Mark Ebner, who made it happen.

Also, we returned to Chris T.’s show at WFMU, “Aerial View” yesterday and spent a rollicking hour talking about The Unbreakable Miss Lovely and other Scientology matters. This was really a good one.

IN ONE WEEK: Paulette Cooper invades Scientology’s Florida ‘mecca’!

By Tony Ortega, The Underground Bunker, June 21, 2015

One week from today, on Sunday, June 28, Paulette Cooper and your proprietor will be making our most controversial stop so far on the tour to support our book about Paulette, The Unbreakable Miss Lovely.

We’ll be appearing at 2 pm at the main public library in Clearwater, right smack in the middle of Scientology’s vaunted spiritual “mecca,” the Flag Land Base.

We hope to see you there.

Hey, we had a blast last night in Chicago at The Annoyance, a really perfect theater venue that was made available to us by Bunkerites Jennifer Estlin and Susan Messing. Joining us on stage was Chicago Fire actor Christian Stolte, who really helped us put on a good show.

Stolte completely shocked us by opening things up with an account of his own brief experience in Scientology. We didn’t know he was going to do that! But it turned out to be a great start to the program. The photo you see above was taken by Christian’s daughter, Greta. What a charmer.

Stolte also revealed that his Bunker handle is “Miles Biondo,” and he and the audience asked us great questions about the book and about Scientology in general.

  33. Hmm. Interesting coincidence.

  34. Made it to the book event last night in Toronto. Seemed like quite a few people there because it was a CFI event who previously didn't know very much about Scientology.

They have now been inoculated / given pneumonia via exposure to the OT III story (with OT IV as a special bonus).
