VITAL MANUAL: Proven succesful in peacefully overthrowing dictators (Farsi & English)

  1. Non-Violent Struggle - 50 Crucial Points by Srdja Popovic, Andrej Milivojevic, and Slobodan djinovic (Farsi and English Translations are posted below.)

In 1993, Gene Sharp wrote what is considered by many to be the theoretical bible for waging a peaceful revolution: From Dictatorship to Democracy. It has provided the strategic inspiration for many successful campaigns including Serbia's Otpor, who's leaders used it's principles to bring down Milosevic. Whilst it is available further down the page, three former Otpor activists, including one of it's co-founders Srdja Popovic, have put together a more immediately practical "field guide" - Non-Violent Struggle - 50 Crucial Points - based both on the theoretical ideas of Sharp (and others), their first-hand experience from the struggles in Serbia and Georgia, and the lessons learned in Ukraine, Belarus, Zimbabwe and other countries.

The guide contains a rich array of practical information that non-violent activists need to know. It's extremely user-friendly in it's layout, and is designed to be a ready-to-use guide for people working in some of the most difficult and often violent conditions. It provides enough information for people to avoid the most common mistakes, and allows them to select realistic objectives, structure their response efficiently, and effectively influence public attitudes to the point where ordinary citizens are willing to participate in the struggle.

A Farsi translation is contained in this 1st post, the English version in the 2nd, and Gene Sharpe's original publication in Farsi in the 6th, and English the 7th.

Anyone with contacts with the major Tweeters, Bloggers and so on, please forward them links to this page, or actual copies of Non-Violent Struggle - 50 Crucial Points, along with the relevant information. Please do the same if you're corresponding with any Iranians by email. Many thanks.

    File hash (Farsi Edition: 5.24MB):

    MD5: e456b3a9c9f1ee7d957212e48c0211d4
    SHA1: 0f4500115d540d6689f20b4f5e2da43ea40aab6a

How do I know this is safe to download?

You can confirm that this is a virus free version, using the following simple steps:

    1. A "file hash" is a secure electronic fingerprint, unique to any file. Make any alteration to the file, and the "hash" will no longer be the same. The file's name, can be changed as that's just "the sticker on the box" so to speak, but not the file itself.

Okey-Dokey, first step is to copy the file hash for the manual you want: this is the long sequence of numbers and letters to the right of the characters "SHA1:" DO NOT COPY THE CHARACTERS SHA1 AS WELL OR YOU WILL RECEIVE AN ERROR WHEN YOU CARRY OUT THE NEXT STEP.

    2. www.virustotal.com is a respected, first rate virus, malware, and assorted nasties scanner. It uses 41 well-known antivirus engines to carry out it's check, and you get to see the results of each!

Go to http://www.virustotal.com/buscaHash.html, which is Virustotal's hash search facility. This enables you to search for a previously tested file (which all of these files are), by pasting it's hash into the search box. Click search, and you'll see the results of the file's test results.

You now know that our version is safe, but you need to know that the file you download is identical...

    3. There are many pieces of software that allow you to generate filehashes easily. One I've always found pretty good is HashCalc (464.65KB). You can download a free copy here: HashCalc - CNET Download.com. CNET Download is a very respectable, very large web company, who take great pains to ensure that all their files are absolutely safe.

    4. This last section, is very easy to carry out. However, I've listed every last keypress, to avoid any errors.K First install HashCalc. Then run it. You'll see a white box with the word "Data" above it. Press the button to the right of the box that has ... on it. Browse for, and select the manual you've downloaded, and click Open [it doesn't actually open the file, it just lets HashCalc know which file you want to check.] Ensure that the box to the left of SHA1 has a tick in it. Lastly, click on HashCalc's Calculate button. Wait a second or two for the filehash to appear (it's the number to the right of SHA1). Copy the full hash by double-clicking first. Then paste it into notepad, and check that it matches the ones you've seen. Bingo!...you now know that you too have a clean file.

Alternatively (if you have the bandwidth), just download the manual, and then upload it to www.virustotal.com to test it for yourself.

Please give this to people you trust, and ask them to do the same. In this way, the manual will be quickly spread.

    Good luck! :)

  5. Listen, lots of talking with Polish friend who was there in '89 and very, very good ideas. The people can shut off the power before the government gets the chance, as long as they have enough supplies. It involves overloading the power grid, which means lots of people have to do it at the same time in organized way. Then all the have to do is wait at home or in buildings with their supplies and radios to communicate with each other until govt gives up. Sounds so easy. Much, much harder.
