A year ago willershime talked about neutering the cult not shutting it down and I have always felt that there have been many who wanted to do the same thing. There are people who say that there are some good parts of the tech I disagree. because AFAIK the tech is basically one thing and you can't pick an choose parts of it. That does not mean that every thing a scientologist does is evil but if you accept one part of the tech you accept it all. Good actions are still part of the bad tech and the tech is to believe hubbard was an alien visitor. (more or less) and that he (LRH) knew more than the average person. As long as you have the belief that LRH was a "good guy" or even a "smart guy" you can't tell the difference from the good and the bad parts of the tech. LRH was a crazy bastard who could not tell what was real and what was not in addition to being a son of a bitch. If Charlie Manson ever helped an old lady across the street you would not point to it and say that some of the things he did where not bad. You would say that old lady is lucky she wasn't raped and murdered.

It would be a scandal on a par with Jayson Blair at the NY Times or Stephen Glass at the New Republic if they paid these people. Paying interviewees is the reason people look down on tabloids like the National Enquirer. The Enquirer pays sources, and the fact that they do seriously impairs their reputation. For example, they can't be cited as a source in scholarly work, while they SP Times can. Despite the fact that the Enquirer's broken some very important national stories (Monica Lewinsky, John Edward's affair), and is often quite reliable, their willingness to pay sources keeps them in journalism's second or third tier. The journalistic reasoning is that people will say anything for money, so info can't be trusted if it's paid for.

But getting in the newspaper is not usually something people are paid for. TMZ and entertainment news do pay sources for gossip but front page news wouldn't be something a newspaper would pay for.

Blair plagiarized (which is how he got caught), invented quotes, published off-the-record info, and claimed datelines that weren't his. The stories, by and large, were quite real.

They are in the position to hammer on David Miscavige, but until the feds step in, or perhaps the FDLE re-opens the McPherson case, and forces them out of their shells, they are not going to change. Both want to step in when DM gets tossed out or....

Blair was a big story because he was reporting the top stories in the news for the NY Time not the top story in The Saint Pete times on a slow news day. Unless Tom Cruise, and John Trovolta both commit suicide by choking on a copy of Dianetics this story is going to stay below the fold in most papers unless there is nothing better to report. "Cults mistreat members" is not going to be a top story. "Scientology cult of Movie Stars gets V& " would be a big story.

Re: What does Rathbun Want? The SP Times doesn't pay for interviews. It becomes an ethical problem for them to do that. They DO pay for expenses related to doing the interviews and usually require receipts showing how the money was spent for tax-related purposes. I'm quite surprised that Tommy Davis hasn't publicly accused the SP Times of paying Rathbun, Rinder and the other two of doing the interviews for big $$$$.

And the consensus reply seems to be; Neither Rathbun nor Rinder can or wants to take control of the CoS. A) They're satan in human form to most scientologists B) When the frothing midget goes, so does the CoS C) A few birdies have peeped into my ear about things Rathbun and Rinder have said themselves. Although the debate on Rathbun in particular being someone who can comfort the headless masses when the CoS does fall is still raging.
