I'm not saying I know how to win. But I am saying the war is on. And everyone ought to spend some time thinking about it, discussing it with others, preparing yourselves so you know how to act if something compels you to make a decision. Be very careful not to err on the side of inaction.

And I've been anticipating this eventuality for a couple years now. But I don't know what to do. I talk to anyone that will listen, and I'm sure that's a start. But I bet there's some fucking savvy tech gurus and hackers that are working on plans as we speak. I'm here to volunteer. I want to help. What's the most effective thing I can do? How do we coordinate our efforts to maximize our success? The Chanology network is my only real connection to the culture that I think will do the most good in this fight. So this is the forum for me to post on to volunteer. I hope others see it the same way and speak up. And I hope someone involved in a larger project sees this thread as a resource, a place to recruit good talent from.

Not everyone on the internet needs to be sifting through the leaks themselves - but we need a lot of people doing that, and publicly tweeting or posting or whatever about what they find. And those people need to be communicating with each-other, as an overall project, a concerted effort. Ideally, there should be dozens of small communities each doing this independently, with some cross-pollination. But again, not everybody needs to be involved in that project, and there's a certain point where the law of diminishing returns kicks in. We have a MASSIVE cognitive surplus - we need to utilize and exploit it for greatest effect. Keeping the information available on torrent sites is good, as it makes it available to tech-savvy people, and that's the least likely to get taken down by governments. Keeping it available on html pages keeps it visible to everybody, and that's what the mainstream media will care about - if it's not available on HTML, it's not really out there (in their minds). We also need people arguing in comments of stories. We need people contacting journalists, and offering the alternative side. There are no 'talking heads' that represent the internet. We need to fill that vacuum, to counter bullshit claims that transparency will cost more lives than it saves. We need to change the narrative, removing the word 'treason' altogether. We should publicly embarrass ANY person that makes a 'treason' argument. We need to get a sizable cache of cognitive surplus available if things ramp up further. Identify allies. Allies that don't feel compelled to get involved - yet. They aren't enemies; they're our replacements, our /b/lackup. We need to control the narrative. We need to create an international dialog. We need to undermine efforts at fear-mongering and paternalistic thinking. And we need to demonstrate that the leaks can do something good. Not just as a means of revealing skeletons in the closet - but in the sense of helping nations self-actualize. The internet is playing the Jungian 'trickster' or 'prankster' archetype; and Jung explains quite convincingly how this helps any individual (or meta-organism, like a nation or corporation) integrate their 'shadow-self' and 'persona' to achieve self-actualization. This is the narrative I'd like to see pushed, in response to the 'revealing secrets undermine diplomacy' narrative that's being spun. Oh, and a strong emphasis on the importance of free speech as a protected right. edit - a compilation of related youtube videos would be good. Push those videos far and wide. 'How cute cats can help' would be an obvious one. Any other persuasive youtube videos that we can try to push into the memescape? Anybody prepared to make some new ones? This shit needs to go viral; new media MUST defeat old-media on this one.

But then, these forums aren't quite the hub of freedom of information that they once were. And it probably never was one of the 'major' hubs, outside of the scientology context. Still, just sayin'. Whoever is out there fighting the good fight and aware of these forums... please think of us as a resource. I'm sure we'll deliver if called upon. And I think that's true of a great many more internet communities that aren't presently 'involved' deeply.
