If you want to convince other people of something, you should be sure of what you want to convince them of. Which shall it be?

    1) What wikileaks has been doing is legal, a form of journalism and needs to be protected as free speech
    2) It's good that wikileaks exists
    3) Wikileaks does more good than harm
    4) Julian Assange is the victim of a campaign, including the accusations in Sweden
    5) Julian Assange is the victim of a campaign, not including the accusations in Sweden
    6) Bradley Manning should go free
    7) The content of the leaks demonstrates [whatever] about US foreign policy

One of the problems why I'm a bit reluctant with any of this is that I haven't made up my mind over the implications of all of this yet. Even if you have, you have to be prepared to meet many people like me and many other people who are openly hostile to some of what wikileaks has done, e.g. publishing a list of sensitive targets. That's highly irresponsible, even if it's probably legal.

There are some interesting points made in Consenses post. I agree with many of them.
    That being said:
    Little too leaderfaggy for me.
    Also, NYPA.

Not tryin' to lead, and you've under no obligation to listen to me. I'm merely brainstorming. Take the good, ditch the bad - hell, tell me to fuck off. I'm cool with it.

    (1) is true, and needs emphasized. The 'treason' stuff is starting to die in the media.
(2&3) are subjective value judgements. If we want to push this, we have to make the case that it serves the subjective aims of our audience. There's no way for ANYBODY to appeal to objective morality. You must define what you mean when you use the words 'good' and 'harm', and those definitions must resonate with your audience or your message will be lost.
(4&5) I have no loyalties to Assange. I don't know if he's a rapist or not. I'm fairly confident he's being persecuted, though I don't know if anything illegal has been done against him. In the end, I don't care all that much - he's just a man. I give him credit for kicking this off, for being the lightning rod, for putting himself in such a vulnerable position. But the conversation should NOT be focused around him - it should be focused around free speech and the leaking of 'sensitive' information. It should be focused around the fact that wikileaks is a journalistic site that should be afforded the same protections the new york times or any other newspaper gets - and that those protections apply to EVERYONE.
    (6) No loyalties to Manning either. I consider him a hero, personally, but I'm not any worse off if he's killed. Well, aside from the blood on my hands, since it'd be my fucking government that does it.... Anyhow, I'll go with the 'civil disobedience' approach here. Manning actually DID break the law. And the law he broke has 'execution' as the consequence. Gandhi and Thoreau, as I understand them, argue that 'civil disobedience' must involve breaking the (unjust) law in a non-violent manner AND ACCEPTING THE LEGAL CONSEQUENCES. I'd love to see Manning's life spared. I'd love to see him remembered as a hero. But in the grand scheme of things, for my purposes, that goal is expendable (whereas promoting transparency and opposing censorship and tyranny are not).

    Also what consensus said.

I don't have a problem with lead fagotry, as some smart points were made. Diplomatic and effective for the people that are going to need to be dealt with.

Right now Julian has been scheduled to meet with Scotland yard. He will need bail fo beteen GBP 100,000 to GBP200,000. The money in paypal and swissbanks has been frozen and he is appealing for assistance. He also needs up to 6 people in the UK offering surety. the info is here

Julian Assange to be questioned by British police | Media | The Guardian

I think it's quite pressing now. He is beginning do wear down, you can read about it in the link.

So has Wikileaks, dropped the password to the Insurance file yet? I'm really interested in seeing what Assange has on the States.

they wouldn't drop it now would they? They'll wait until the extradition trial looks truely dire and then they'll drop the dox.

Re: Wikileaks need help! Mass-mirroring Wikileaks

Er... I thought they'd probably only do it if Sweden extradited him to the US. Once he's in their hands, he's truly fucked.

Re: Wikileaks need help! Mass-mirroring Wikileaks

Yeah, sorry, that's what I meant. Though I think it'll be just before. Otherwise he won't get to see the fireworks will he? But I suppose that's just what I'd do. If it's something truely huge he'd probably be better locked up nice and tight in a cell before anyone out there can do anything to him.

There have always been limits on free speech- as there should be in my opinion. Now of course the trick is figuring out where to put those limits. But I always chafe when somebody insinuates that there should be no limits on free speech.

Re: Wikileaks need help! Mass-mirroring Wikileaks

That's a fair point. And one worth exploring. Really, that's EXACTLY the conversation that needs to be had - because everyone accepts that there should be SOME limits, but there's never been a consensus reached on what those limits ought to be.

Certainly yelling fire in a crowded theater when there is no fire should be illegal. But releasing documents that are true and verified has nothing in common with that.

Meanwhile, the press has been in bed with the US government for decades, electing not to disclose facts that voters OUGHT to know because the government doesn't want them to spill it. That's precisely what wikileaks is challenging.

And they're not the first to challenge it... the pentagon papers and deep throat are both examples of whistleblowers that the press picked up and ran with.

Yes because that would give internet activists a entirely new case to misrepresent for years when this guy fails to show up in front of the judge like keith hensen. KH made CamAnon claims with an Anon Orange attitude, and got off easy imo.

And yes there are limits on free speech you can't make certain types of threats, you can't defame people, can't say fuck on the airways, can't publish books that others have previously written, or even play music in some public places with out approval from ASCAP. Kevin Truduea says his fraud is protected under free speech, and the CoS has said "fair game" is protected under the first amendment as well.

Re: Wikileaks need help! Mass-mirroring Wikileaks

    Not sure about that yet.
Is it really so dangerous to publish a list, which consists of basically nothing more than public infrastructure, which is critical and therefore need to be better protected than other infrastructure?
Wouldn't a terrorist know that buildings such as power plants, airports etc. are critical strategic targets anyway?
Clearly the 9/11 attackers didn't need a list to know that the WTC is a high profile target, which is critical for the functioning of the world economy.
I haven't made my mind up yet, how much of a threat this really is.
It should also be noted that apparently the department of homeland security has build databases with such critical infrastructure thas is located in the US.
The database was criticized in this paper, because it contained to much "useless junk"
    Is this database publicly accesible?

WikiLeaks is in it deep this time guys. We need to get our collective asses in gear. I don't mean to NYPA but we need the channers and we need everyone here right now reading this to email their MP's / Majors and get to fucking work.

Re: Wikileaks need help! Mass-mirroring Wikileaks

How about a petition? I see people expressing support everywhere with no action to take about it. It's no good persuading people if you don't suggest they do anything about it.

tbh, international politics says "lolwut" to petitions. Get you local MP or whatever to feel like he won't get voted back in next term if he doesn't vote against it (if any vote arises). Politicians are selfish, self serving bastards. Speaking as the son of one. They'll look after themselves first.

    Speaking of money:
WikiLeaks needs it. Are there any ways we can get funds to them? I'd be more than happy to give a sizable lump. But everyone seems to be cutting them off. Are there any avenues availible?

    Agreed.
Nah, don't fink so. Like to remind you that we're not "anonymous," we're "Project Chanology," which may contain traces of anon and insect parts. COS can try to spin this til the cows come home, for all the good it'll do him.

Who, exactly, is doing this perceiving? The general public, most of whom have never even heard of anonymous, Scientology or Julian Assange? Of course parts of the internet will support his effort. To some, he's a hero. And none of this is going to have any impact at all, because the stupid cult, if you haven't noticed, has been bawwing to anyone who will listen that we are terrorists etc. for two solid years.

Ever hear of the cult who cried 'wolf?'

Don't use MasterCard, they've cut off their users ability to donate to Wikileaks. That article recommends:
The Wikileaks website also recommends a bunch of ways to donate, assuming you're using a less crappy bank. Wikileaks - Support
