This was was based on the IRS 990 forms for 2007. Naturally, the form for 2008 is not available yet.

Tom Cruise was pushing the detox thing. ABLE might be explained away. But what possible excuse could there be for giving money to the Celebrity Centre? It's a bit like if I were to donate a lavish amount of money to a luxury hotel from a foundation I controlled. It's not even just "like" that. That is exactly what it is.

The foundation gave money to things like autism and Alzheimer reseach, which seems to break with Scientology. They also gave money to other legitimate charities, like hospitals and Make A Wish. So it's not all skullduggery.

He throws some cash to the cult to keep Jada and her family from Disconnecting.

Note that the tax return we're talking about is from 2007. We don't know if the Will and Jada foundation will give any money to Scientology this year - apart from the New Village Academy.

He might still not be a Scientologist, but he's at the very least a hangaround and a so-called "cash cow" for them.

We'll see if that changes for 2008. But the tax-returns for 2008 won't be filed before well into 2009. Is there any other way to confirm if he's telling the truth?

"It's unsurprising that Will Smith would want to shed his blockbuster baggage every once in a while and throw himself into a smaller, more dramatically weighty role; unfortunately, critics say his latest, Seven Pounds, is more leaden than anything else. Smith stars as Ben, an IRS agent haunted by past misdeeds. As a way of making amends, he decides to practice random acts of kindness on strangers, a plan that goes in intriguing directions when he falls in love with terminally-ill Emily (Rosario Dawson). Some pundits have given Smith credit for attempting riskier material, but they also say Seven Pounds doesn't follow the rules of logic very closely, and its tone is somber and portentous. At 35 percent on the Tomatometer, Seven Pounds may not be worth your 10 dollars."

This is not proof that Mr Smith has gone bat-shit crazy following intensive auditing, too many Purifs, and talking to flying ashtrays: From Variety:

' Nor can it be said that Smith, whose most recent box office barn-burners, “I Am Legend” and “Hancock,” seemed consciously designed to set the star apart from the rest of humanity, shies away from the saintlike status conferred upon his character. Indeed, he embraces it in a way so convincing that it proves disturbing as an indication of how highly this or any momentarily anointed superstar may regard himself.'

Does this remind you of anyone?

Re: Will Smith and Jada's foundation gave $122,500 to Scientology

Honestly i can't believe we didn't figure this out sooner, and it is blatantly obvious that Will Smith is about as physiologically stable as Tom Cruse. I find it sad that Will Smith entire acting career has been about him saving the "god forsaken world" Since independence day his movies have become more and more about how great he is than making a good movie. Men in Black, Enemy of the State, I Robot, have all been Smith overcomes anything the world can throw at him. Like Jim Carry in YES MAN, Smith movies are all the same. Every time i watch a new Smith movie its independence day all over again, except all the background characters are their to make Will look even better(As in his latest flic 7pounds. Since the interview where Smith proudly explains that 2+2 does not actually = 4, i have lost all respect for this guy and see that his fame as got right to his head, he see's himself as a god. I'm sure he means well, i'm sure he thinks that, showing himself succeed in movies he is doing the world a big favor by showing us all "How its done". Frankly this guy is Tom cruse 10 year ago and I bet we will soon see his career take a nose dive as soon as all his fans realize hes a Scientology.

I wonder if there would be anyway to find out if the $50K donation to the celeb center was actually the kind of "donation" you pay for services; courses, auditing, books, etc.?

I'd bet $20 it was for "services received."

Finnish mags are calling Scientology a "sect." Not a Cult, but still atleast not a religion. Improvement from last year, when Co$ was still referred to as a religion.

Just watched the Tavis Smiley segment with Woll.

Woll Smof seems like a small eager child who is seeing the world for the first time.
He sees all these pretty coloured things and goes, "Wow!".
He collects all these influences and goes, "Wow!"

Smof is a highly driven person, which I admire.
But he has got to stop "Wow-ing!" about Scientology (Aside from The Alchemist, you can pick up the language and thought of Scientology in the interview), and really examine the disgusting abuses which are part of this system.

    carry on...

Re: Will Smith and Jada's foundation gave $122,500 to Scientology

Not really an improvement, since all sects are religious. On the other hand, not all cults are religious - such as Amway. Honestly, I'm not sure if Scientology is a religious cult - even if it started out as purely non-religious, and the religious terms and symbols were only adopted to cloak the corporations behind religion, there might be some members who buy into it being a religion. That doesn't make it more a religion than Apple Computer is a religion. We can still protest their crimes and abuse.
