Iran is slowly striking back at the dissidents in one of their lasts bastions of hope, the internet. While continuing to use violent means to prevent protesters from gathering in the streets of Iran, the revolutionary guard is now using illegal and malicious tactics to quell dissent in cyberspace.
As many of you have may have noted, our Youtube Channel has recently been shutdown again. Our channel, with over 17 million views and 3,000+ video’s, is the most popular channel for protest footage from Iran.
This is the second time in two months our channel has been shut down due to bogus copyright allegations.
As we work to resolve this issue, we hope to shed light on the fact that Youtube’s copyright protection is now being used to suppress the voices of Iranian dissidents and protesters who hope to share their videos and stories with the world. This tactic is but one of the many new initiatives that the Iranian regime is undertaking in order to launch a crackdown on cyber dissidents.

Recently, Iran was accused of stealing a number of security certificates in order to spy on dissidents using services like Gmail, Skype and yahoo in the latest in a string of cyber-events between the regime and those who criticize it on the Internet.

IDG News Service -… Iran has the means, motive and opportunity to pull off an attack like this in order to spy on supposedly secured communications between Iranians and the servers used by companies such as Google, Skype and Microsoft, all of whose certificates were spoofed in the attack, said Melih Abdulhayoglu, Comodo’s founder and CEO. “All things point to the Iranian government and their newly founded cyberwarfare department,” he said.
The Iranian government has been interested in monitoring and controlling its citizens’ Internet use for close to a decade now, said Mehdi Yahyanejad, founder of the popular Iranian discussion site Balatarin.
E-mail and Web-based malware, along with distributed denial-of-service attacks, are regularly used parts of Iran’s toolkit, Yahyanejad said. The DDoS attacks flood websites with useless requests, knocking them offline. They appear during protests or times of unrest, often as a way of muffling protest on the Internet. “They want to make sure that during those days the videos don’t get out quickly enough, [in order] to reduce the media impact of those demonstrations,” he said.
In the past few years, a group calling itself the Iranian Cyber Army has surfaced and defaced websites belonging to Twitter, Chinese search engine Baidu, and just last month, the Voice of America. Nobody knows who the Iranian Cyber Army really is, but Yahyanejad believes that they could be state-sponsored too.

This might have been accomplished by the automated censor system on youtube. Do you anons know if this can be fixed by writting to the youtube staff and trying to get this channel out the said system? What are our experiences with the Church0fScientology channel?

In the meanwhile, use other video sites, preferably outside the reach of the DMCA.

The FM team has tried those routes...we're looking for more of a direct line with someone who understands the political aspects of this situation, we'd rather not go through all the auotmated bullshit

Ah. You need a guy who knows a guy who's owed a favor by a guy who's dating the daughter of a Google employee...so to speak.

You could simply file a DMCA counter notice, especially for the DMCAs that seem to be from a non-existent entity. That would get the channel back in about 2 weeks.

You basically have no chance ever to reach someone at YT directly, I'm part of a quite large group of people that has tried for over a year now - forget it. Even Youtube partners with quite the hits on their videos usually have no success.

For the DMCA counter notice you will have to submit your info like address and so forth and this will be forwarded to whoever filed the DMCA. If you don't want the channel's owners info to be handed to that person(s), you can use the info of someone else (with their permission, of course - could be your lawyer for example or just a friend who doesn't mind having his info used) to file the counter notice. (explanation: should someone ask then you shared the rights on the video).

Once the counternotice is filed the other party then has about two weeks to actually sue you (they made a claim, you made the counter-claim, next level would be a court) - what of course won't happen, if it's a fraudulent DMCA.

The video will be back up after two weeks, the strike removed and - if the DMCA was fraudulent - now you have a theoretical legal case against who made it.

ATTENTION: Do NOT file DMCAs or conter-notices "just for lulz". Unlike flagging a video on youtube a DMCA is NOT a youtube procedure but an actual legal procedure, so by filing a fraudulent claim (for example to get rid of a video/channel you don't like), using a false address in a claim and things like that you actually commit a crime in the US (and I assume some other places too) and theoretically could get into real life trouble (like when the other party actually has the money for a lawyer)...

All I can think to do is to always have an up to date mirror.
